View Full Version : Somebody broke into my house
Today my castle was violated. Sometime mid morning some piece of shit scum bag mother fucker decided that he wanted what I had. The basement window was broke out and they made their entry. Luckily nobody was home. The house was not rummaged through as you would think, this was a quick grab and go. No major electronics where taken, the wife's jewelry and a few check books are gone. I made the worst mistake as a gun owner and left both gun safes unlocked after a range session the other day. By a stroke of luck no long guns are missing but they did take two pistols. Please be on the look out for a .25 auto derringer. It is a stainless frame with pearl grips. The other gun is a Ruger single six .22 Lr/ .22 mag revolver serial #26325856. They also took an IPad and the one that pisses me of the most is they took my two year old daughters piggy bank. My mother had it hand painted when she was born and has her name (Sydney) and her birth date (05/25/12) painted on it.
They didn't take a lot but that's what has me worried. I know they saw more and I'm wondering if they are planning on coming back. Security cameras and a complete system are on order for tomorrow. We all think this won't happen to us. We move to better neighborhoods, and do our best to give our kids what they need and want, but there are always lowlife shit heads that think they can take mine and yours. I will learn from this and adjust what I do and don't do. Keep you and yours safe.
Keep your head on a swivel...they knew you weren't there and had probably been watching you for a while. Maby local neighbors kid or something like that.
Sorry to hear about it. :(
Sorry to hear about this. Hope your stuff gets recovered.
It's not the items that were taken but they fact that my wife and kid almost both stayed home sick today. My two most precious things in life could have been in the house when these shitbags came into my home.
I know it isn't the things. I don't at all envy what you're feeling right now.
One thing to consider if they had been home. (Noise/car in driveway) They may not have broken in at all. Yes, burglars can be very dangerous, but there is also a reason many strike at day and not night like people commonly think.

Sorry to hear, that's terrible. I'd be pissed at them taking the piggy bank too. A few weeks ago, i apparently left our house completely open. Thankfully no one decided to come help themselves inside, but getting home to a wide open house was no fun.
Sorry to hear this. I think we have all forgotten the safe door in our lives. It really makes you wonder why this happens when you work so hard for what you have. I would recommend that you have a professional help you with the cameras and other setup. This MUST include two people walking around the property with comms on looking for blind spots. If any pictures are not clear enough to CLEARLY ID a person it is worthless. They also need to be out of the way and not reachable by the bad guys. Be carefull of internal cameras and your own privacy. The recording device should be hidden and on a backup power supply. Not sure what a "complete system" is but all system have weakness. If you want, PM me and we can talk.

Sorry to hear. What did the Police have to say?
Just out of curiosity what part of Broomfield are you in?
He just felt you had enough and need to redistribute some of that excess. Its the American way.
But seriously, Im sorry to hear that. It'd be a gross feeling knowing some stranger was in my house. Do you have any dogs? I assume not but just curious.
About 20 years ago I had my house broken into,,,lost some things and some had value but the biggest part was the violation,,,sort of likened it to being raped, had a very uncomfortable feeling in my own damn house for a long time after. Was probably someone living in the neighborhood and with what was taken it was probably kids and not a pro.

If your a NRA member then you have gun insurance.
Hopefully you can find out which FFL they used to transfer your guns to themselves and track them down that way.

I have a safealert in my safe that will alert me to the safe being opened, moved, fire etc when I am not home. Might be something you want to look into. I store more than just guns in my safe.

Make sure to stay very alert of what is going on in your neighborhood. There is probly a very good chance they live close and knew you were gone.
Can they track the iPad?
If you have an Apple ID, you can enable locate on your iPad. If your iPad syncs to your iCloud account, maybe they will be nice enough to leave photographs for you and the police. Definitely contact Apple and see if they can help locate your iPad. Where it is...your other things will likely be as well.
Time is of the essence.
Be safe.
Thanks guys,
I'm going to respond to the questions in one post instead of trying to quote everyone. We do have a dog but she wasn't home at the time. I don't think that would have mattered as she rarely barks and I fear they would have caused her more harm the she did them. I will not give any details on the security system, but the only thing it lack is armed security guards. The Broomfield cops were nothing short of awesome. As soon as I realized that someone had been in the house, I called 911 the proceeded to clear the house room by room just in case. When the first two officers arrived they did the same. Neither officers said a word about the pistol on my hip when they came to the door. For reference I'm at midway and Sheridan. This was a quick grab and go job judging by what was taken and what was left behind. If it had been planned and scouted they would have taken much more. As for as the iPad goes, I did not have find my iPad installed so that is of no help and when I contacted AT&T the could not locate any of my account info.

Broomfield police are usually pretty cool. We have used them a lot for intervention and teaching moments with our foster kids when we still had them. My house used to be just down the street from you off of 7th and Ash off of midway there. Never had a lot of crime in 8 years. Only major thing we had was someone tagging out fence and front rocks in the yard with spray paint. There use to be a halfway house just down the street from me off of 7th and Birch, but nothing really ever happened. The police patrol a lot down in that area. My neighbors always looked out for each other. You must have been cased first or somehow someone knew no one was home and you had good stuff. Let your neighbors know to be on the look out.
I am still in Broomfield after selling the place, but farther south off of 120th now. Still pretty peaceful neighborhood.
I hope some trace gets left and leads the police to the thief.

I have heard of those Safe Alerts, what's the cost for that service? Sounds like a good idea.
I've been the victim of a home burglary as well. On my birthday no less. I was pissed. I wished I was home when they broke in the front door so that they could have "earned" their true reward.
In the end, it was "stuff" that was lost and insurance replaced most of it. The feeling of having your home violated takes a while to get over. Glad the family is safe.

my wife was never interested in having a gun close by, that is until yesterday. I asked her last night if she wanted a pistol close by, her immediate was yes. She stayed home today to get things going and took the pistol everywhere with her. The whole situation has her uneasy as it does me. Knowing that someone was in my home is the most uncomfortable feeling. It is a sad day when you have to arm yourself inside your own home.

I had a thief enter one of my vehicles a few years back, didn't even take anything, but knowing some unknown criminal was in my personal space was one of the most uneasy feelings I've ever felt. I can't imagine what you and your wife are feeling right now.
That's infuriating, and frightening. The words I can think of for this POS can't be used here in this forum, but I'm outraged on your behalf. How tight is your neighborhood? Do you think any of your neighbors may have seen anything? Does your neighborhood have a Nextdoor.com site? There may have been other people that were hit as well, and you could pool information and/or locate possible witnesses.
Keep an eye on Craigslist and ebay for the piggy bank....and maybe even pawn shops. If you have a photo of the piggy bank, you can upload it and do an image search on Google.

My neighbors are amazing. The cops talked to all of my neighbors and the officer told us that he had never gotten so much information from neighbors after an incident. My neighbors gave descriptions of 5 different vehicles that were seen parked in front of the house with times that they were seen. One neighbor even came over this evening apologizing profusely that he didn't see more or hadn't stopped this from happening.

I hate thieves.
I am glad you are taking steps in case they return.
Sorry to hear this story, I really wish it was a dead intruder story instead. Hope you feel secure soon.
I have heard of those Safe Alerts, what's the cost for that service? Sounds like a good idea.
I looked it up. $200 for the box and required monthly service.
I'm looking at Wink because they partner with Chamberlain (for my wifi opener setup) and others, but still looking for a relay to detect an unlocked safe bolt in addition the the sensors for motion, temp, etc.
Be very glad that if your family was home that we don't live in a antigun utopia, because they wouldn't have thought twice about braking in. But most punks know not to B&E a house in America when someone is home, because you don't know if they have a gun or not. And saying "I have a gun" is usually enough. You don't want to argue with someone like that.
Cameras are good but if you have the coin and you are really paranoid I would suggest a panic room.
I will keep my eyes out for scumbags selling anything that matches your stuff and report back. Sometimes you get lucky.

coincidentally I was browsing the site yesterday while my girlfriend was kinda of chillen next to me. (I'll be quick here). GF is young, and has never been around guns or literally ever even had protection cross her mind. to the point where the last time I went to her house, she didn't even have the front door locked.
well her and I had just talked about this stuff last week for essentially the first time. everything from situational awareness, to locking your car doors in the parking lot, basically starting from scratch. If it means anything to you bro, she happened to read this thread with me,, and is now VERY interested in getting up to speed on personal safety, home protection etc. Shes coming into a situation where I have a son, who she will be, at least in part, responsible for at times, and this thread pushed her into action.
thank you for sharing. and remember there's silver linings in there. learning from small examples like this, (your wife, my GF etc) is what prevents something really bad from happening in the future. Thanks!
That sucks. I hear what you are saying about the piece of mind (will they come back?) part. My wife and I were home when somebody tried to break in. It took years before we could sleep soundly at night, without waking up when the house creaked. You've already started your analysis and taken some steps to take control of the situation. Good luck with that. If it helps, here is my experience:

There was a story on News4 tonight about a rash of break ins in your area. I only caught the last part of the segment but they appear to have video/phot of the perps. Hope they catch them and even if you don't get your stuff back, they put the slime away and keep them off the streets.

Sorry to hear about what happened.
Hardest thing will be proper security system sensor selection, placement, and layering. This becomes difficult especially with pets. I have done a DIY install of a commercial UL rated system in last 6 places I have lived. If you have any questions or are looking for advice during install, please PM me.

Im very happy that you GF has heeded the warning and is looking at protecting herself. It upsets me greatly that we even have to consider these things, but it is a sad truth these days. My wife will not even go room to room without the pistol very close right now and that pisses me off. But like you said, we can all learn from these experiences.

I posted up a year or so ago about a good friend of mine who walked in on two intruders at her house near park meadows. the year I bought my house in stonegate (bout 4 years ago) there was a forcible entry forcible rape.... in stonegate... parker...
this shit is here. it's not going away. It upsets me too that the current state of our society requires a higher level of vigilance than it used too, but these small (I know it's not small for you yet, but comparatively) examples and reacting the right way is what keeps our loved ones safe... if you need anything or want a beer or something, let us know man..
Thanks Lars for the heads up, we live in Torrey peaks on the other side of 120th and I also showed my wife this thread. We have a security system on the way, changed a couple of worn out dead bolts, and decided to add a couple of security lights around our house. We have gotten complacent living in the burbs and needed a reminder that creeps are everywhere. Thanks for the wake up call.

One more reason to get the hell out of the front range. Nowhere is impervious to crime, but some acreage in the middle of nowhere, with a long drive would certainly be nice, I'm thinking something similar to Hbar...

I seem to recall a book by Truman Capote recounting a true story of just such a place.
Now that's just cold blood ed. 😎

Eh, I'll take my chances.
The point is so many people think that crime doesn't happen in more remote areas but it does. Some say the frequency at which it occurs as compared to higher populated areas is lower... which is true but only part of the picture. There's also less people for the lower crime to be spread across so the likelihood of being the victim of crime living in a remote area isn't as low some might think. Just depends on which set of figures you look at.
That's not to say there aren't plenty of solid reason to not live in a city.
Either way, having a firearm on-hand that you're capable of using is a good idea. No such thing as a crime-free area.

Make sure the alarm company you choose notifies you as well when an alarm is received. Police departments can be slow on the response. I only work a few minutes from home. If the cops are not lto greet them I an my Glock 29 will be there as well.
As for a security system , a camera is great. You dont need glass break detection. Go with PIR motion detectors in all rooms with exterior windows and doors. Door contacts on all doors. Make sure the system can define movement and where the pricks are moving. Insure your cell phone is compatible and can receive real time info.that to you including footage.Signage is a good deterrent. Many security companies offer a package, most of the time that package is s rip off.

You must have missed the part where I said nowhere is impervious to crime.
I grew up in a really small town, and know quite a few people living 30 plus miles from civilization, and not one of them has been victimized. I can't say the same for folks I know living in the metro area. The firearm thing, I've got that covered.
Sorry for the detail OP.
Sorry OP--just seeing this.

We had this setup when we lived in Conifer. Long, curved driveway...the house is hardly visible from the road. Nice neighborhood. Well, we got home and discovered someone had broken in.
The thieves gave our dogs treats, and were picky about what they took. My wife had a ring from her grandma that was taken, they took a Deep Rock water jug that was full of change (over a grand easily), and some other stuff that was easy to get out. They didn't take TVs or stuff like that. They took a fake Rolex that I had. I'd like to have seen the surprise on the creep's face when he tried to sell or pawn that. We were pretty shaken. Take heart that peace of mind will mostly return. The thief used my old Remington Nylon 66 .22 rifle (and broke the stock!) to pry open other locked rifle cases (we have since bought a safe). They took no firearms luckily.
We immediately got an alarm system. That's when most people get a system...once they've been burglarized.
We heard from a Aurora detective a couple of years later that they had found a police scanner (we used to listen to fire calls so we would know about forest fires immediately) that we reported stolen but didn't get it back since we didn't have the serial number. The thief had been caught in an unrelated matter and they discovered stolen items. The thief had come up to Conifer from Aurora to do his robberies! He was going to houses that couldn't be seen from the road, knocking on the door and if nobody answered, he'd break in somehow (broke a window in our case). We've never got anything back that was stolen.
I hate thieves. Sorry this happens.
Man I'm sorry to see this happened to you. I fucking hate thieves [Mad]
Imo, an appropriate reward for burglars:
