View Full Version : DIY rattle can camo
So, going to try my hand at doing a little camo on one of my rifles. Probably won't camo the whole thing out but just do the stock for now. I've seen a lot of people online doing some pretty cool stuff. Hopefully mine doesn't turn out looking like a third grader did it when I'm done. Going to pick up some paint while I'm out running some errands today. I'll post up some pictures as the project progresses.
Wish me luck.

Luck!
Well, Home Depot didn't have any good paint. Guess I'll have to swing by Walmart and see what they have.

Are you going to use Krylon or what? Walmart always has a good selection of camo colors.
I applaud your courage and I anxiously await the results. I've been wanting to do this for a while now, but don't have the guts. I've been practicing on a few other items lately, trying to build up my rattlecan skillz.

Lol. Thanks.
I'm going to post some actual pictures up shortly.
Ok. Here everything is all disassembled and ready to go.

Used some of this to make sure there wasn't any oil left on it.

Here everything is after the first coat of paint.

Here it is somewhere in the middle of the process.

And I think this is where I'm going to stop. Although I'm debating adding a touch of forest green.

I'll probably let it sit overnight before I put it all back together then I'll post another picture.
That was quick. Where'd you end up getting the paint?

What paint brand and colors did you end up using?
I have been meaning to give this a try on an M&P15-22, but just haven't gotten up the courage to due a whole gun. I did a color test last fall with an old stock and Rust-Oleum.
Props for taking the plunge.
I'd have to look. Can't remember if it's Krylon or Rustoleum. I do remember the colors are "sand" and "dark earth".
Ok. I was too impatient to wait until tomorrow to put it back together. Seemed dry enough. My indoor photography skills suck. I'll take a better outdoor picture when I get a chance.

That looks awesome Ray, nice job for sure.
Needs more effort...All I see is a p-grip, a mag and a barrel. [Coffee]

If you look closer you'll see a buffer tube and a rubber recoil pad too. [Awesom]

It's just something I'm working on getting finished. Remington 700 AAC-SD in 308. The chassis is an XLR Element. Made right here in Colorado. Grand Junction actually.

One more reason to move there. Okay hijack over. Looks great Ray, actually similar to a pattern my father did a few years ago.
Love that! What was the technique?

Kind of hard to explain. Painted it solid tan. Then kind of striped it with the darker brown. Then everywhere it was tan I held a hokey stencil thing I made that was supposed to sort of look like vegetation and sprayed over it with the dark brown. Then stenciled over the dark brown parts and hit them with a bit of the tan.
Im going to put an add up and see if I can pick up a couple of cheap stocks to practice on. I came up with some other ideas while I was doing this and want to try them out.
Thanks to forum member "driver", I have another stock to practice on.

And here it is after the initial base coat.

And after the other base colors were applied.

Definitely not finished by any means. If I can't finish it this weekend I hope to do it next weekend.

thats about out what I did with an AR. I took aspen leaves, pine tree needles and laid them on the rifle and painted over them. I thought it came out ok. When it was dry, I coated it with a non-reflective clear coat.
Did some more. Need to let this side dry good and then do the other side.

Took a couple of pictures of the finished stock. Now I need to find something else to practice on.

I have a Savage tupperware stock you can practice on. I'm sure there is a lunch in there for your effort [Coffee]
I am thinking about trying to stiffen it up some until I have the money for the XLR chasis.

I might take you up on that. You might want to do whatever stiffening you want before I paint it.

You have a great eye on how you want the end product to look. Very nice job.

Thanks. Not sure about the "great eye" part. It really is more of a "make it up as you go and hope it turns out OK" kind of a process.
I like the fact that with the spray cans the process goes pretty quick. Want to change colors? Just grab another can. I have automotive type spray guns and an airbrush setup that would work awesome for this type of thing and give me much more control over application of the paint. But the extra hassle of setting them up, swapping between colors, and cleaning everything up when I'm done just isn't worth it and kind of defeats the purpose of a cheap, quick and easy job that is easy to touch up or re-do.
