Bummer that anybody would make such a choice. Seems like a pretty poorly planned suicide attempt. [Dunno]

A man protesting Fox News shot himself in the chest and was critically injured Monday outside of the News Corp. building in midtown, authorities and sources said.

The man, who was not identified, was found just before 9 a.m. sitting slumped outside of the building on Sixth Avenue and West 47th Street, cops and witnesses said.

Police at the scene said that the man apparently shot himself with a small-caliber pistol, which was found on the ground next to him. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, cops said.

Prior to the shooting, the man was heard protesting Fox News, saying that the news channel ruined his life, a source said.

Security guards asked the man to leave and when they turned around to walk back inside, they heard a gunshot, the source said.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, had what appeared to be a suicide note in his pocket, the source added.

I don't understand why people shoot themselves in the chest. Even if it does kill you, it takes a while. Long enough to regret your decision, at least.

If they are killing themselves they are obviously in not the greatest mindset making well thought out decisions!

How could this happen in NYC?

How could this happen in NYC?
Same way people were shot at a Home Depot in NYC?

Yeah no kidding... If you DO die, it's not going to be quick...

I wonder if he was originally planning on shooting someone else with that gun before putting it in his chest....

Well now we need to change the title of the thread. He died.

Also, pointing to what I said earlier about being shot in the chest as a painful and relatively slow way to die... he was taken to the hospital and wasn't pronounced dead until more than an hour after his arrival.

What do you mean? Was he making tin-foily rants? I thought he was just ranting about how Fox wrongly fired him or something.

The note apparently rants about how Fox News ruined his life.

I'd still rather take one in the chest than pour a can of gasoline over my head and self-immolate. Yikes. Dunno how those monks do it!!

Kris Lew said she was preparing to open a coffee-and-food cart, the Cinnamon Snail, on 48th Street when she heard gunfire. “I thought to myself, ‘Those sound exactly like gunshots, but it can’t be, because we’re in Rockefeller Center.’”

Yeah, how did he get there with a gun? Ya know, since guns are SO ILLEGAL in New York City![facepalm]

That's what I was wondering. Gun-Free-Zones means what it says, doesn't it?

I think it means it is a gun free zone for all people who follow the law.

Damn those criminals not respecting the SAFE act either. What shall they do...make another law the criminals will surely abide by it!! Hahaha

Small caliber? Should have used a 45.
Should have taken a long drive off a short pier. Should have jumped off a high bridge. Should have done it a whole bunch of other ways. I hate it when "guns" become fodder for the media.
