View Full Version : I thought .22lr ammo was supposed to be available again?

Went shooting prairie dogs over the weekend and blew through my last 300'ish rounds of rimfire.

This morning went to buy more so I could go back out again. Stopped by 6 stores and nobody had any to sell.
In fact the 3 Walmart stores I visited all had the same story. They get 2-3 50 round boxes a week and people are waiting in line to buy them before they hit the shelves.
They haven't had ammo on the shelf in at least a year.

So I visited a few gun and sporting good stores and they all had the same story.

It is official- I am oiling and greasing up my rimfire guns and putting them deep in the safe. They might get used by my yet to be grandkids and kid is only currently a young teen.

I reload, so I don't generally buy ammo. In fact it has been years since I bought 22lr and reloading supplies. Today I bought some .224 projectiles; so now plinking is with centerfire guns.

How many of you are in the same boat? Personally it has been years (over 5) since I have purchased rimfire ammo. No, I did not hoard any. I assumed wrong that it would always be available.
I have been slowly shooting an old brick for the last 4-5 years.
In days past I used to shoot 2 bricks a day about once a month.

Have any of you considered high performance air guns... I'm seriously considering this option as well.

It's around... I see it more at wally world than anywhere else.. I still won't buy it being a stupid price.. I've seen some decent deals on Gunbroker for 5k lots..

Bass Pro gets it regularly. They had a shelf full of 500 round boxes last week. I just walked right by it. Forget Wal Mart. The hoarders are still hanging out there like vultures.

I never paid more than 10 cents a round, and usually 4 to 5. I have bought 4K in the last 2 months with no stress.

It has been my experience that I have found more decent priced rimfire ammunition when I wasn't actively hunting it down. Do I check anytime I am in a store that might carry it? Sure, just about every time, but I usually have had the best results when I wasn't expecting it.

I keep getting it at Cabelas.

Sportsmans might have some. The Fort Collins Walmart on Lemay has a big sign saying they have NO rimfire ammo today.

We're still working on 2007 inventory. Anytime the spouse or i saw it on the shelf, we usually purchased 3 - 4 bulk packs.

This is why every time I went to Wal-Mart before the craze I bough a box of .22lr bulk pack. I sit on so much I will have to at least buy another 10/22.

I check every time I am at a store but have not seen any in a long time. I have not shot much 22 the past few years so I still have a lot.

I have been considering getting a PCP air rifle for plinking but the cost and hassle of a tank is holding me off.

I have not seen it at 3 local Walmarts since April 2013. I don't make it to Cabela's too often.

There's plenty of 22 available. You can get it at almost pre-panic prices if you shop the big box stores often and regularly. Otherwise, it's always available, albeit at prices you don't happen to want to pay. Supply and demand.

Won't be in stock for long, but cabellas online has federal auto-match 325 count for $18.99 ($20.54 with tax added, free ship-to-store).
They limit to one box per day.

Again, these sound great but that makes it about 120 mile drive for me... sorry, isnt gonna happen after you cost in the fuel it is still cheaper for me to shoot .223 or 9mm.

That 22lr isn't available locally to me... I'm glad for some of you it is available at prices I still wouldn't pay.

As far as hitting stores regular and often.. that isn't gonna happen either. I work with drive time 65-75 hrs a week. I have no time for casually dropping by stores daily that involve driving to town and wasting 2 hrs just to check in.

So you want it to magically appear, at the stores you choose to go to when you want it there?

At prices that haven't really existed since the panic?

I still have plenty of .22 LR but I bought caseloads through CMP to be sure I could support my habit as well as youth training programs.

got one mid summer. Hatsan at44-10 in 22 cal. WELL WORTH THE $$$ AND HASTLE OF A SCUBA TANK !
I shoot about 500 pellets a week w this thing. Accurate as hell, fun as hell, and sooooooo easy. Scuba tank fills are $6. Get about 1500 shots before I need a scuba fill up. Pellets are cheap too. My gun loves the crosman premier ultra mag. $9/500.

I am pretty sure I have it down to a Benjamin Marauder and a SCUBA tank for fills. But when I see the $1000 price tag I keep thinking that could go towards another firearm.

I am pretty sure I shoot more pellets in my basement/backyard in one year than I do rifle ammo at the range. I burn through a 500 count tin in a hurry. And at 10-20 meters, I dont have to buy the stupid expensive pellets.

at those prices, they could hand deliver. that is ridiiculous. You might as well shoot .223. He must be incahoots with Anthony at Colorado shooting sports in Greeley. I wonder what kind of person pays those prices for .22. $119 per 500. and ammoman wants 99 per 500 of .22lr. crazy.
And that's why I never go in that place.
