View Full Version : NETGEAR wireless router help!!
For some reason I have 30mb download speed, but my Netgear 824v3 router is limiting my wifi down to 9-10mb. I have upgraded the firmware, and checked everywhere that is limiting it and found nothing. If I hardwire into my router, I get the full speed. It is only over wifi that it is choking down to 10mb. I have tried the netgear support boards and found nothing that has helped, and my router is a few years old and doesn't have the troubleshooting warranty. I can either get a year warranty for $80, or just buy a new router for $83.
Any network admins have any guesses?
If I had to guess, it may be radio noise/frequency interference. This is a bigger problem on 2.4 GHz channels than on 5 GHz, but 2.4 has better penetration on walls and such. Maybe try changing the channel from the default to something else?
FWIW, I get around 90 Mb/sec hard wired to the router, and 18-30 over wifi, depending on which laptop I'm using and where in the house I am.
I looked up your hardware. It seems to know about 802.11b and 802.11g. If 802.11b is selected, that'll do it right there.

I have tested speed with laptop and Ipad/Nexus and both are close to same wifi speeds. So I know it's not the hardware in my older laptop and new nexus.
I have tried changing channels,
Frequencies - auto 108mb, wireless B+G, etc.
I've upgraded the firmware
Disable WMM in your wifi settings. I went from 18 down on a 2.4g network to 34ish.

This
On a 5ghz 802.11AC router i get 100mb/sec on my iPhone, same as my wired connection.

where/what is WMM?

Qos setup. Little checkbox at the top
It gives priority to streaming media, but makes speedtests look like poop.
Sometimes there can be coexistence or interference problems that manifest themselves by a stepping down in throughput. Lower signal strength will also show itself with lower speed. If you're comfortable saying whether you're running Linux, Mac, or Windows, someone might be able to suggest a diagnostic tool.

Cool! Disabled. Flushed DNS, release/renewed IP, jumped up to 13mb down!!!! HAHA.

Running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. The diagnostic tool show's system is working properly no errors.
Also can disable mixed mode (b+g) unless you still have an old "b" device. This has some choke.
the interference of channels is a big probability. Do a survey of your house and see if your channel is being used by the neighbors. Pick the one w/ least signal strength from others.
Use only channels 1,6&11 on 2.4GHz. If one of your neighbors is being a channel hog, go turn off their house main breaker [Coffee].
These are the initial ideas that come up. There are more down in the weeds tricks to try.

My next step would be flashing ddwrt or tomato and cranking up the tx power. I have to on mine, being so close to so many networks. I can pick up 19 ssids from my living room.

Already shutdown to just 802.11g, I will switch to one of the channels now! - there is only 1 other network around that I can pull 2 green bars. everything else is just showing up and disappearing.

o.0 -- HUH? HA, sorry. I am only a basic computer person. I will be googleing WTF that is here in a moment :D
Tomato and ddwrt are custom firmware options. They allow much more than the stock stuff. For example: increasing the radio power in the router.

Theoretically, of course. Our friends at the FCC might frown on that. [ROFL1]
switched to channel 11 and I am pulling 17mb download.
getting closer to my 30!

I need to get some not so stateside wireless cards so I can use chan 13... Hehe.
Some of the Netgear routers wont work w/ DDWRT. I put it on 3 of my old Linksys ones, and it is awesome. I actually dropped transmission power at one installation because it was just too much power (did I just say that outloud?). . Another thing to check is location of the router and antenna orientation.
Do you have another wireless device to try ?
Oh yea, are you using G mode, or N.

What options do you have? 1 6 and 11 are the default auto switching channels. If you can try 3 or 8, they overlap into the auto channels but I generally have good luck in areas with high traffic. I would also get a new AC router if possible, it will support way higher speed then you have now and it has superior antenna technology. I would get the netgear nighthawk for my house if they weren't so dang expensive!
Have be you tried moving the router around in the area it sits? Moving it a foot can make a drastic difference in the broadcast.

I get 12 down and .6-.8 up plugged in directly to my netgear DSL gateway or wireless anywhere in my house, I have my modem in the crappiest place to, it's in the basement in the furnace room under the heat ducts, I get full strength on the main floor and about 3/4 strength upstairs. It's all about placement and channel and having a decent router to start with. I deal with wireless complaints everyday, this test was just ran on my iPad on the main floor on the opposite end of the house. Century link sucks!

There isn't too much of a difference if I am sitting next to it, out on the couch, or on the back patio.

I can get the full 5mb up, it's just my download speed that is being Choked.
I scored a free D-link but it's not on the list so I can't get DD-WRT onto it.

This is pretty normal, I hate wireless.... You said you updated the fw on the router but have you looked for new drivers on the client side?

Yes sir!
I complained again to the wireless company and I am getting there Wi-Fi router/modem. That why they can trouble shoot the problem.
THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP. I learned a lot.
The best "Realistic" speed you are going to see on "G" wireless is around 20 Mbps in an "Optimal" configuration. You can fiddle with the channel settings testing one at a time to see if one channel produces better speed verses another or enabling or disabling certain wireless features. If there are other 2.4Ghz devices (Cordless Phones, RC Cars, Wireless Routers, etc) they all contend with the same 2.4Ghz spectrum of channels. These other devices can cause more noise on the channels and result in reduced performance.
Realistically, I think you need to ditch that "B+G" wireless router and get a new one that supports "N" wireless. Most newer wireless devices support "N" wireless and that speed will produce real world speed of around 50 Mbps. You can find "N" wireless routers all over the place for $50 - $100 depending on the features you want. If you are expecting a speed above 20 Mbps you will have to upgrade to an "N" Wireless router. There is no getting around that fact.
Picked up the Motorola Surfboard Modem/Router and can pull 6-34mb download. It's completely spotty and random, so I am attributing it to all the noise on the network.
Currently:
Running in 2.4ghz since my laptop can pick up the network when it's in 5ghz. Also, disabled WMM
