Personal Defense Simulations, LLC is a firearms training company dedicated to bringing realism into our Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) classes. This is done by using a state-of-the-art, computer/laser-based firearms simulator.

PDS uses the latest in laser and firearms simulation technology from LaserShot, Inc. In addition to first-rate classroom instruction from NRA Certified Pistol Instructors students will be able to experience "range time" on the simulator as well as face real situations where they'll have to decide to shoot or not shoot based on a life-like video scenario. This type of judgmental training has previously only been offered to law enforcement officers or military personnel, or at a price out of reach of most "ordinary" people. Not any more!

If you were involved in a minor traffic accident and faced this man...

...what would you do? We'll train you what to do based on various factors including:

What does the law allow you to do?
What potential legal and/or civil issues will you face?
Risks involved to you and others
Avoiding this type of situation altogether
Each student will use a real gun that has been modified to "fire" a laser at the target and to provide realistic recoil through the use of compressed air or CO2 belt packs. No projectile is fired so this makes for an extremely safe but realistic firearms experience.

To introduce the community to what we offer, PDS is offering a one-time introductory Concealed Handgun Permit class for only $75.00 per student. That's 57%...$100.00...off of our regular class price of $175.00 and class size will be strictly limited to 12 students. That savings will pay for the bulk of the cost of your permit!

This class exceeds the State of Colorado training requirements for issuance of a Concealed Handgun Permit. All students attending will receive a certificate allowing them to apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit. We will also offer free refreshments, coffee and a light lunch to all attendees.

This is a great opportunity to get first-class CHP training at an unbelievably low price. All training materials will be provided. All you need to bring is yourself, a pen and a willingness to receive outstanding training geared towards helping you protect yourself and those you love.

Here are the details:

Please enlighten the board with your qualifications to teach the following two areas.

"•What does the law allow you to do?
•What potential legal and/or civil issues will you face?"

I and i am sure many many others are curious.

looks like a FATS style (FireArmTraining Simulator) nice setup. worked with one of those years ago, using LAPD contact scenarios. doesn't require much training outside of running the program and knowing shoot, don't shoot. Really good price for a 1 day class @ $75.00

wish i could afford one of those training systems, the cost of the class almost negates the cost of ammo.
using personal CO2 tanks is definately an upgrade/improvement to the older FATS system

I've PM'd my response to you, Hasher. I'm not going to cover everything I did in the PM but here's the basic answer to your questions:
NRA Basic Pistol Instructor
Utah BCI Certified Instructor
14 years sworn LE experience in CO including 10+ years as a firearms instructor and field training officer.
Former USAF Combat Arms InstructorNow, I'm not an attorney but my class curriculum has been reviewed by an attorney. I am very familiar with CO and UT laws regarding use of force and weapons statutes. I also make it clear in my lecture that I'm not providing legal advice (other than to call your attorney if you've been in a lethal force-type encounter), merely providing students with what the law says and offering insight as to what steps might be taken in certain situations, from a layman's perspective, based on my fairly substantial experience. Do you think I'm the only instructor that does that? One need not be an attorney to inform others as to what the law says.

As a matter of fact, if you've been through the UT BCI Instructor course, you know that course instructs the instructors on teaching UT law and potential civil issues to be faced by potential permit holders. CO doesn't have any such certifying process for instructors but I don't see why it would be any different. If I were contemplating attending a CCW class where the instructor didn't talk about legal stuff, personally, I'd look for another class.

Obviously, the picture you reference in your post is a video still. Obviously, one can't make a judgment about what to do, in terms of legal issues, by looking at that snap-shot in time. It was meant as a "teaser" to illustrate a typical scenario the average person might face. I think most people, obviously not all, can recognize that.

I also have first-hand experience seeing what people might face in the aftermath of a use-of-force scenario. In addition, I've consulted with attorneys regarding cases involving civil issues after their clients have used force to defend themselves.

So there you have it. I've already PM'd you my contact information. Feel free to call me if you have any more questions or if you feel the need to ask questions for "many others" on the board.

OK...maybe I will cover pretty much everything I did in the PM.

Jim...

Yes, this system is very similar to FATS. And, yes, it's pretty expensive! [Rant2]But, ya gotta pay to play!

While it doesn't offer all of the same benefits as live fire, it's pretty close. Furthermore, it offers some benefits that can't be obtained using live fire. So, in my opinion, it's a pretty good trade-off and provides some excellent decision-making and skill-building opportunities for students at a pretty reasonable price.

The $75.00 class price is just for this initial class and is a promotional price. The regular price will be $175.00 for the basic CCW class. Slightly higher than some others, but with benefits and training not available in any other class that I'm aware of...at least in this area.

with out a doubt. being able to do scenario's such as these w/out expending ammo/live fire still gets the adrenalin pumping. Especially after going through 1 or 2 and assessing what was done right or wrong and how to correct them w/out actually putting yourself in harms way to get that education

Unfortunately, the website is under development. It's a priority and should be ready to go within a few weeks...we're shooting for the 1st of the month to have a basic web presence up and running.

I will PM you or otherwise notify you when it's online.

Thanks...I appreciate your interest. You, too, Jim.

By the way...this system is mobile. We can take it anywhere there are two medium-sized classrooms. We need one room to accommodate up to about 16 people and one room to set up the simulator. The sim room need only be about 12'W x 16'L. Everything is portable.

If you're interested in hosting something like this anywhere in the state, we'll work with you to make it happen. We'll have a program in place once we get rolling where the host person can attend for free with a min number of paying students. Details forthcoming.

I went ahead and took this class. It was a great experience and the staff were great and knowledgeable. I learned some good info, techniques, and have some new thoughts on how to react to certain situations. This is the first time I have taken a class like this so I can't really compare it with other classes. The simulator was pretty cool (can't wait to get one of those at my house).
The only negative (and this is a minor one) is that there was no live fire or range time but this course was not designed to do so. We did get ample time on their simulator which allowed for scenarios that could not be done on a range with live fire. As with all classes like these, shooters should have hours of range time under their belt before carrying to familiarize themselves with their handgun of choice before they carry (IMHO). I wouldn't feel safe carrying unless I was proficient with my side arm. I will be able to take what I learned from this class to the range and hone my skills at my own pace.

I definitely recommend this course to anyone looking at getting a CHP in Colorado. We had experienced shooters and beginner shooters in the class and I think the tailored it well to suite the needs of both experience levels. Again, Carl and the rest of his staff were great.

Thanks guys for the fun and educational experience,
Aaron

Thanks, Aaron, for attending the class. It was a pleasure to meet another forum member.

I'm glad you came away from the class feeling like you'd acquired some valuable knowledge and skills.

Maybe we'll meet up again some time.
