Anyone do tires? (needed)

I need a set of tires for my car. I was recently quoted $850 for a set with 30k warranty and $892 for a set with a 80k warranty. (prices are mounted and balanced). Wondering if someone here did tires and would have a better price. Tires are going on an AWD sedan. Size is 235/55/18. Dont need high end tires, but I dont want tires that get noisy/sloppy at 20k either.

Where are you getting your Quotes? Check out Discount Tire. I just did a search on their website for a couple of different tires and the grand total was usually in the $600 - $700 range.

Here is a hint for you. If you find or know a guy in the field, he should be able to mount and balance them for you for cheaper than the dealer will charge. Some dealerships can charge $120 or more for mount and balance because they own the machines. The tech doing the work may only make about $12 to $18 to do that task.

Talk to Ztechnic on here. If you get the tires, he may be able to borrow you and your car for a few hours to get it worked out, and get them mounted up for you. Of Course, bob is in the springs, so it would be a drive.

Les Schwab ($850 and $920) and Big O (only read off one option at $892). I have had some fairly negative experiences at Discount.

Don't know anyone that mounts/balances. I was looking at tirebuyer (refers me for local install at ~$70) and will probably go that route if I dont get something to pan out locally.

Show them what you can get tires for online and a reasonable addition for mount/balance, don't pay for warranty and road hazard etc. they will work with you on price. Go new tires for my car and showed them the price online and said I'd rather give my business locally if they can match the price plus mount/balance/tax. They were installed within 45 minutes!

you're not really doing an apples to apples comparison. 30k warranty--what does that mean? is it a performance tire with softer rubber? is it a crap tire that's just not going to last? are you going into these places saying "i need tires for my nameless AWD sedan" or are you giving them any input on what you want?

They were not performance tires. I have been asking for mostly highway all seasons that will not try to execute me in the snow. It's a 2010 Taurus, and not the turbo version. I use it to drive from Thornton to englewood/centennial everyday (and i voice this over the phone). I will go out of my way to read reviews from several sources on a particular tire before i buy. The $850 30k tire got crap reviews after 10k miles or so, since i drive 25k or so a year, they weren't even considered.


In any case, wife and I got this taken care of. Thanks guys!

Jesus, my luck sucks... Upon removing my old tires, the shop scratched all 4 wheels. Took it back. Their wheel refinisher is checking it out monday, they are paying. Then, this morning, my wife picked up a roughly 1x1 chunk of aluminum. Ended up with a 1 inch by 1/4 inch hole in the tire. Of course, I opted out of the road hazard.... FML

I'm not typically one to buy extended warranties or the like, but road hazard on tires is always something I spring for. My current set of tires, I didn't have a week and got a screw in one of them.

When I went to the shop today, the guy noticed that they were 4 days old. He saw the ticket and said "So, I see you would like to add road hazard to your tires today"

Paid for road hazard and got the tire replaced at no cost. Cool guy.
