With the bolt carrier and top cover removed it closes shut, when the bolt carrier and top cover are installed it will not lock together when I fold together the upper and the lower. What to look for as it has me absolutely stumped at the moment.

It's the locking lever to upper receiver fit. Plus the pressure of the bolt carrier.

Here is how the nose of the cover fits. I think I'm going to go pull it all completely apart and start over. I suspect that it has to be something simple that I missed like one on the sides of the cover missing the channel it is supposed to slide in.

Moved with a redirect. Two things. First is it looks like you have an original style para top cover. There is what we call a "para cut" supposed to be on the upper receiver for this style. They make them both ways. With and without. After that do understand that the latch looks normal in the pic without the top cover. Just close the two haves together. Do not try and force the latch forward because it is made that way to be a wear item. As the latch and receiver wear the latch will move forward in a normal battle rifle use type situation.

Hope this helps. A pic of the upper where the cover fits in would be helpful.[Flower]

I am aware of the fact that the lever will not be full forward when closed. I just cant get it to lock when I "shotgun" it shut. The top cover is original to the rifle when sold. Seriously It just has to be something obvious I'm doing or I have bent the cover in some manner.

P.S. Who put the gun together? Para with a bipod and SED lower with a DSA type 2 upper.16" barrel. STG or G-1 kit to start it looks like.

Has the cut so something is amiss.

Top cover has to be flush with the upper. (in the rear) If it is not going forward to seat then ya need to find out why.

It is a DSA, and another question while I got you is it only the inch pattern FAL that had the folding cocking lever. Are there aftermarket folding cocking levers for these or are modifications necessary that make it not worth the effort.

The cut for a folding handle is .290" back from the front of the receiver, .160" deep. VOW http://www.vowguns.com/index.html used to make a US folding charging handle. Three types of charging handles for the Fal. Std Metric, Inch folding and Izzy forward assist. Your DSA is a early Para.

Long story short they bought all the prints and parts from Austria. Started with just the upper receiver and went from there. As the years went by they offered their guns in both new parts and ones built with NOS (surplus) parts. over time they built there own parts from the prints. The last item was the bolt and that happened around 2009. The 42693 # on the lower tells me that your gun started out as a mix of US and NOS STG parts.

Depending on when it was built the lower, the bolt, barrel, gas block, gas regulator and little things like the HG retainer and lock lever are original Stg Austria parts. This progression started in the 90's and they still after all these years have some parts made 30+ years ago.[Flower]

Does it latch together if you ease it together ie not "shotgun" it shut? I have a FAL that will not slam together either but it goes together and stays extremely tight if you slowly ease it together and give it a good push while using the latch. I'm guessing the fit on your rifle is tight (which is good) and is the reason why it doesn't slam together. I have worn/loose FALs that will just slam together.

You can get the folding charging handle from DSA's website that will fit the metric rifles without modification. With Para rifles make sure you push the top cover flush while closing the halves together or it wont close. Also make sure you assembled the BCG into the top cover properly and aligned everything into the associated rails. If it fit on there when you received the rifle it should go back on.

Put a picture of dust cover up. Did I see a crack on cover?
It is a "nose" type cover?
