So a guy at work gave me these. They look like .45 acp rounds, but they are 2 pieces that screw together the bottom part has a pin fixed to it and there is a brass bushing in there too. Any ideas

Are they open at the bullet end ? If so, possibly adapters to shoot smaller calibers out of a pistol chambered for 45 ACP ?

Dummy or "practice" rounds. The spring loaded mechanism mimics a primer so the firing pin has a bit of resistance to strike against.
If there is no spring then they are just using inertia to slow the pin down. Possible that the springs are missing.

Is the internal dimension look to be about that of a .22lr. ?

I can fit a .22LR in to them but the base won't screw back on. I had .22 short and same thing won't screw back together. I don't think it's laser related, maybe black powder related but they are too clean to have been used with black powder.

I'm pretty sure these are rubber bullets. Can anyone confirm?

If I had to guess, I'd say adapters for rubber/wax/paint pellets, running on power hammer crimped blanks...total wild-ass guess, however.

I dunno, but I'm sure we need to ban them!

There are companies in Japan that make cap guns that use cartridges that simulate real bullets that you load caps into. They look very similar to what you have but cant find the exact ones you have pictured.

Good catch. Did some hunting around based on your information and it appears these are cartridges for a Plug Fire Cap model gun.

These brass cartridges should be dimensionally different than a standard .45 ACP cartridge.

Matrix cartridges, put small gyroscope in them to shoot around corners and to control POI after bullet leaves barrel.

I once took some training using indoor practice cartridges that looked something like that - they used a primer only, and a lightweight, re-usable projectile for teaching handling fundamentals and basic shooting skills indoors with paper targets. One of my first shooting classes was taught by an old guy using those cartridges in a 1911.

It's been over 30 years, though, and I've never come across such things again...
