Well I'm flying out to San Diego come morning. I have to spend a week out there for orientation on a new job. I'll be traveling alone so what are some good places to see or eat at before I come home?

I don't have a passport. Can I still cross with just my Colorado drivers license?

Tijuana..........

My experience there involved downing the first half of a fifth of tequila way too quick which made the suggestion of my platoon sergeant that a donkey show would be fun seem like it would be. There's not a coffee out there that will sober you up quicker than a donkey show. I do think you need a passport for travel to Mexico these days.

I lived there for 5 years. Provide a little more info on what you're interested in doing/seeing and I can probably shoot you straight.

Do not cross the border. My last Tijuana excursion in 2005 resulted in being handcuffed and held in an alley for 1.5 hours. I was set free, but I was $120 lighter when it was all said and done.

In N Out burger for some really good fresh made fast food
Kansas City Barbeque (film location for Top Gun, they've really embraced it)
USS Midway museum
San Diego Natural History Museum (actually has a bunch of museums in the park with it, including an auto museum and an aviation one)

SD Native.

Either Alberto's or Sombrero's... Carne Asada Burrito. Thank me later.
Casa De Bandini in Old Town. Food is great and margarita's are huge.
Mount Soledad will provide you with an awesome 360 degree view. Grab some lunch, go up to the cross (if it's still there, I heard they might take it down) and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.
Kate O. Session's park in Pacific Beach. Another place to chill on the grass and enjoy.
Riding the old wooden coaster at Mission Beach is a kick in the pants.
Following the coast hwy up through LaJolla, Del Mar, Encinitas, is an awesome drive. You can start at south Mission Beach on Mission Blvd. and keep going till you have had your fill. Take the time to stop and take in the sights.
Walk the pier in Pacific Beach.
Coronado is nice. The trip over the bridge is always cool. Nice beach over there as well. You can head down the Silver Strand to Imperial Beach and hit the pier. If you don't want to do this whole deal, you can drive over the Coronado bridge and enjoy the view and whoop a u turn and go right back.
Walk the harbor down town by the Star Of India. The Midway tour is great as well.
Sunset Cliffs. Go there just before sundown and see how it got it's name.
If you like zoo's... The San Diego Zoo is awesome. Sea World is great too.

I'm sure I could go on for days on this one. If you choose any of the above you won't regret it. The Carne Asada Burrito is a must. Add some rolled tacos with guac. to that and enjoy!

BTW... Don't even consider Tijuana. It's a shithole. Unless you're going to some of the great places much further south, there is nothing good about crossing that border.

I have a friend that did this (http://miramarspeedcircuit.com/) and it looked like a ton of fun.

Hope the interview is for a job outside of CA! Just my 0.02, but I wouldn't risk crossing the border, especially alone. Not worth the risks.

Passport is a MUST. Just because it borders us doesn't mean it's the same country, to some.

If I was down there I'd pop into Ares Armor (http://aresarmor.com/) just to shake their hands for being such a thorn in the side of the ATF. Even after the ATF bulled them.

I spent the first fifty years of my life in San Diego. There is a LOT to do there! Big John hit a lot of the highlights. If you like to fish and have the time, take a half day boat out of Mission Bay or Point Loma. If you like seafood, check out Point Loma Seafood. It is one of San Diego's best kept secrets. A squid sandwich and a Anchor Steam on tap is hard to beat. Café La Fe (if its still there) has great Mexican food but I wouldn't go there at night. For golfers, there are more golf courses in San Diego county than there are in all of Colorado.
Above all, have fun!

I've spent a fair amount of time there.

The USS Midway museum is fantastic, just south of there down the boardwalk is a fun little shopping area called Seaport village with some decent eats.
Alberto's Carne Asada is fantastic.
Point Loma seafood is some of the best I've ever had.
The Zoo is great. You could spend all day there, but it doesn't sound like you are taking a vacation there, so you probably don't have time for this, unless you REALLY love zoos.

Forget about Tijuana. It really is a shithole.

I've actually heard that the Denver Zoo is better than San Diego, but that was just one person's opinion.

some of my favorite eating spots are Taco Surf, South Beach Bar and Grill, Hodads, Shades, Pacific Beach Bar and Grill for brunch.
We love wondering along the Boardwalk in Pacific beach finding places to,have a drink and snacks. The people watching is amazing.

Having been to both in the past year, I liked the SD zoo better, but that could be because it was new to me. I've been to the Denver Zoo dozens of times.

Her gripe was that every other display at the San Diego Zoo was wild boars or prairie dogs.

I preferred the Denver Zoo, I think the exhibits are much better at Denver.

If if you have time there is some great mountain biking on the northern side, Mission Trails I think. If you make it down the Silver Strand to IB you need to eat Don Panchos. If you go to In N Out know that there is a not so secret secret menu; Animal Fries, 4x4 and any burger Animal Style.
