So my wife's car was stolen last month on January 15, we have been digging around with the insurance all this time. They found the car the same day. We live in Aurora the car was found in Thorton. Police have done basically nothing, they dusted for fingerprints found one set that belongs to me. We had to have the car towed to Len Lyall Chevrolet because the thieves fried the computer on it, so we have been out a car, our only car for over a month now walking everywhere. Our insurance is terrible and it's taking forever, inside the car is approximately six car stereos, drug pipes, and about six bags of stuff that does not belong to us. The police will not even come down to pick up the stuff from Len Lyall Chevrolet. My wife had her checkbook in there, now today we just see that they cash a check to themselves for $40. The lady's name is on the check, yet the police are still not doing anything. Anybody have any ideas on how to track somebody down I have the lady's name I am beyond pissed off

Welcome to the experience of just how useless modern law enforcement is.

Don't try to track the criminals down. It does not lead to any good result for you.

Yeah, It is absolutely ridiculous. It was a cold morning when the car was stolen so the first thing the police did was accuse my wife of letting the car warm up. Even though we told them we didn't and we have the keys on us. Now this lady that stole her car is cashing personal checks. I don't know how the hell she's going away with that cause I thought you needed to show an ID to do that

Why haven't you stopped those checks with your bank? You're naive when it comes to criminals and how one "gets away" with it.

Might not have realized at first that the checkbook was in there. Once that was figured out, asap woulda been closing/opening account imo. Another reason why I'm the credit card crowd. You get skimmed you don't get boned on the money and easy to change cards. Changing a bank account tied to multiple auto draft/mortgage etc, pita.

Fake name, fake ID.. hardest part about it is finding a place that takes checks any more. You got your car back, cops happy.. $40 isn't enough to interest the cops either, they likely get calls on this stuff every couple minutes.

Have holds put on all your accounts and get replacement cards/accounts.

Its a property crime. A cold property crime. Hard to justify pulling resources from active crimes against persons for a cold property crime. Get to the bank TODAY and freeze that checking account, be sure to take a copy of the police report with you, the bank should waive any fees with opening a new account and closing the old one. They should also give you some relief from the fraudulent check(s). Good luck.

Why would you leave a check book in the car ?
Oh wait, you said the wife, I have to constantly get onto the wife about leaving her purse in her car that is parked in the garage. And her reasoning to this is "the garages closed......" [facepalm]

Does auto insurance covers items stolen that were in the car? Or your property insurance if it was on your property at the time of theft? Would that cover the stuff and checks and whatnot?

Was the car found near 88th and Washington?

Don't count on the police for anything for this type of crime. I have a friend who had his car recovered from a person's GARAGE, with a ratchet and the license plate sitting on the hood. Police still did nothing.

No, contents of a vehicle are covered by home owners or renter's policies. Auto doesn't cover stuff that is not permanently attached to the vehicle.

It sounds like identity theft mitigation is your first order of business. Your accounts should be changed immediately, and the fraudulent checks reported to your bank. Is your registration still in the car? I would be a lot more concerned about credit and fraudulent accounts created at this point.

Cops won't do shit, take proof to the bank and get a new account number. This is why people can't have nice things, because they live in cities.

They were an old checkbook, we did not know they were in there. They are stopped now. Thank you for your insightfulness

I think it actually was recovered right by there, close to there in a king supers parking lot.

The registration was out of the car, it was absolutely ridiculous all the trash that was in it. We keep the car is pretty clean, I am not lying when I say there is at least six bags of other people stuff in there. Prison letters, two or three drug pipes, I even saw a hypodermic needle in the vehicle, not to mention all the stolen stuff six car stereos and speakers, an entire bag of kids toys, 4 or 5 car seats. The person that wrote the check was a woman, everything is canceled now we have our accounts frozen. It's just unreal thatwe are being treated as the criminals when the actual thief is free to go

Not the one I'm thinking of then. Good luck getting everything straightened out.

Not sure if car was stolen from your home, but best keep your head on a swivel and stay armed at home if they have your address from the reg.

A suggestion, only. perhaps contact parole board saying one of their upstanding charges left some items in your vehicle they borrowed. Without permission.

It would be like CPS. they'll say changes are in the works, but nothing will happen.

Wouldn't it be something if she got nabbed by a red light camera. Seems anything short of murder or speeding gets little if any traction. Modern times I guess.

Some of our board members buddy ( Tom Martino) did a report on CC theft. He had solid video of theft (CC copies) from cash registers, sales people using CC numbers on camera in different stores Etc. When asking a CC theft dept / loss mgr why they don't push the issue. Said rep said $5 - 10K is considered Acceptable loss per card.

Having been involved in a checking account scam, bank and i set up an account for the scammer to access. 3 days later he goes for the I need new checks sent to me as my vehicle was broken in to and Everything stolen, to my bank. Le notified here & there. End result. LE on that end said it wasn't worth their time, LE here said if LE where crime took place doesn't peruse it, they don't either.

Bank, check, credit card fraud is an open air middle eastern market. Zero fuks given from the Company on down. Makes one wonder how much one could get away with. Then again, being honest puts a damper in that real quick.

Bunny, you and your wife have my sympathy. Can you call me on Thursday or Friday? We'll put our heads together and figure out the best course of action for you.
Unfortunately, the cops in Aurora are overwhelmed and have limited time and resources. Even though you're ready to serve everything up on a silver platter, it won't get done.

But that's okay. You're laying a paper trail for your useless insurance company, and for your records. When we talk, we can go over options and determine what's best for you and your wife. In the meantime, if the cops don't pick up the junk from your car, hold onto it for the time being.

My number is posted in the link driver provided.

Thanks, driver! :)
