For a more detailed article on this, check out the link below. It's been going on for over 14 years. The technology behind it is beyond anything I've seen or heard of. As a techie, I find this both fascinating and terrifying.
How "Omnipotent" Hackers Tied To NSA Hid For 14 Years and Were Found At Last
The money and time required to develop the Equation Group malware (http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/02/how-omnipotent-hackers-tied-to-the-nsa-hid-for-14-years-and-were-found-at-last/), the technological breakthroughs the operation accomplished, and the interdictions performed against targets leave little doubt that the operation was sponsored by a nation-state with nearly unlimited resources to dedicate to the project. The countries that were and weren't targeted, the ties to Stuxnet and Flame, and the Grok artifact found inside the Equation Group keylogger strongly support the theory the NSA or a related US agency is the responsible party, but so far Kaspersky has declined to name a culprit. NSA officials didn't respond to an e-mail seeking comment for this story. What is safe to say is that the unearthing of the Equation Group is a seminal finding in the fields of computer and national security, as important, or possibly more so, than the revelations about Stuxnet.

I wonder if they can use this to launch nuclear weapons too?

I always use a bouncer with a speed ticker to shoot rays off of a tower in Southpark to a location in Idaho, that sends my message through a transponder in CA to the White House where my message is posted to this forum.

As someone who works in the technology field, I used to laugh at movies like Eagle Eye or that one where Diane Lane's car was "hacked".
Eagle Eye is still a dumb as hell movie, but I'm not laughing anymore.

I had no knowledge of this prior to yesterday, but I cannot be the only one here who suspected something like this has always been going on, right? [Dunno]

I always thought the .gov had a backdoor to the cpu, I never dreamed of the firmware to the hard drive. With that capability they could destroy a person adding incriminating data to your computer and then having you falsely convicted. Or they could erase you completely...

I think it's time to watch The Net with Sandra Bullock again. That movie was way before its time.

So much for all those dead man switch programs.
