Picked up a Surgeon 591 action today and of course I tried to set it in my AICS. The oversized recoil lug wont fit, what are my options? I searched online and found a bunch of people, with the same problem, bedding the recoil lug to the chassis. Is that necessary or should I just throw it in the mill and open it up? Even found some instances where people were bedding the tang too which I thought the purpose of a chassis was to avoid bedding. Also if I do open it up, where do I want the lug? I read some were centered with no contact? I thought you wanted the lug to evenly contact on the back of the lug against the chassis?

Open the front , towards the barrel channel , of the pocket . Must be an older stock they changed the pocket size so you didn't have to do this anymore a while back .

On all rifles the recoil lug should have full contact on the back , towards the trigger , and in a perfect world thats the only contact with the stock . If it touches on the front , sides , and bottom it it not the end of the world as long as it's not binding , and consistent contact . The AICS chassis react well to being skim bedded .
