Got tired of looking at the dirty glass on the oven door. Slop had ran down inside the door somehow and ran down the inside door glass. Trying to be the good spouse I took the door apart and started soaking the glass with water and sprayed some windex on both side and let it sit. A minute later the tempered glass exploded into a million pieces. I had my back to it at the time, wasn't touching it. A little research later I read you shouldn't use Windex on tempered oven glass. I had no idea. Now I'm hoping like hell on Monday I can find some tempered glass for the front of our GE range so I don't have to buy a complete new stove.

No good deed goes unpunished.

I've been down the "I shouldn't have taken apart this oven door" road before, and it is no fun at all.

Self cleaning feature! Just sayin'.....

I got a freebie Kenmore oven from a friend when they bought a new one, I wanted it for powdercoating. It was in their house when they bought it, and was absolutely black inside with baked-on crud, never seen an oven that filthy. All my efforts wouldn't touch it, so I figured out the self cleaning operation. Thing cooked for several hours, but it was absolutely amazing how clean it was when done! Basically burned all the crud to ash, then wiped out with wet rags.

More than likely a 2- 3 day not in stock part. If a local appliance supply cannot assist call these guys. Info says they are open till 5 today.

The cheapest route will be to order the glass your self from where ever you find cheapest online. From my experience the appliance repair shops never keep the glass in stock because they are all different and not a high demand item.

How does putting windex on the glass make it shatter?

Food slop was INSIDE the door between the two pieces of glass. How is that possible? You should see my wife cook...

Dunno, called GE Parts and that was one of the first things they said. Also found a few interwebz references to never use windex on tempered glass. No idea why. The food waste was greasy and I shot it windex and let it soak and it exploded. No sh*t.

That seems ridiculous that windex makes it explode... Yet with the quality of appliances today I am no where near surprised.

$46.37 shipped from AppliancePartsPros.com. Hopefully it will arrive in one piece.
Money wasted, but that's not to terrible.

Front glass arrived in 2 days. Wife insisted on helping to install the front glass so I got a few more gray hairs and it took twice as long as it should have, but God bless her, it's in and all is well. I am kind of nervous about firing up the oven for the first time though.

This reminds me. My wife broke the top on our glass top stove. Need to get a new one ordered. Think it's about $350.

Ray, how did that happen? Ours is a glass top too. I'd probably take the opportunity t move to a gas unit, but that's just me.
