View Full Version : Is this dress white/gold or black/blue

Brian

Not a trick, this is crazy and going around the internet in the last 24 hours.

Does this dress look white/gold or black/blue to you? My wife and I are arguing about it. It is definitely a strong blue and black for me. She thinks I'm nuts and says it's completely white/gold.

The dress is white, with gold lace accents and a white bolero jacket.

Is this some sort of social experiment?

The item behind the dress (to the viewers left) is black & white - looks like it's in a milk cow pattern.

The black in the item behind the dress gives you a black baseline as the light brown wood trim to the right gives you a reference.

It appears to me to be a white dress/jacket with gold trim.

It's lit from behind, putting the front of the dress in shadow making the white of the dress appear darker.

I don't see anything black behind the dress- I see a light brown surface with a dappling of light and shadow.

This is very odd. My husband sees the black and blue hues as well.

No clue if this is real science or just some random internet theory. I have light sensitive eyes, but can see very well at night. My wife is the opposite. Been a while since I had my anatomy and physiology class though. It does say I'm high functioning and you white/gold guys are lame though, so I'm going to believe it.

"Your eyes have retinas, the things that let you interpret color. There's rods, round things, and cones that stick out, which is what gives your eye a textured appearance in the colored part. The "cones" see color. The "rods" see shade, like black, white and grey. Cones only work when enough light passes through. So while I see the fabric as white, someone else may see it as blue because my cones aren't responding to the dim lighting. My rods see it as a shade (white).

There's three cones: small, medium and large. They are blue sensitive, green sensitive, and red sensitive.

As for the black bit (which I see as gold), it's called additive mixing. Blue, green and red are the main colors for additive mixing. This is where it gets really tricky. Subtractive mixing, such as with paint, means the more colors you add the murkier it gets until its black. ADDITIVE mixing, when you add the three colors the eyes see best, red, green and blue, (not to be confused with primary colors red, blue and yellow) it makes pure white.

—Blue and Black: In conclusion, your retina's cones are more high functioning, and this results in your eyes doing subtractive mixing.

—White and Gold: our eyes don't work well in dim light so our retinas rods see white, and this makes them less light sensitive, causing additive mixing, (that of green and red), to make gold."

Reflection of the light is just too dimm. You can see brown, blue, whatever.

Yup. I disagree with the analysis of Blue&Black and White&gold. Although if you just simply analyze the damn spectrospcope crap on visual light spectrum junk on the picture (which lack of dim reflection), it might come out different colors on all specific areas. We have seen some terrible pictures with horrible colors on eBay listings, and we have been through a lot of photos in the internet. Therefore I will guess white and gold with crappy light reflection which will bring Brown, blue, black, gray, etc.

MrPrena

Those theories are no science. Only way it can be science is to bring the darn computer screen to the spectroscopy area by area, and find out the wavelength to find the actual area within acceptable dE/E. That will determine the TRUE color of the "photograph" projected on the screen. Actual color of the dress would be unknown until we see a better picture.

My husband asked me to weigh in on this. Color wise I see a whitish dress with nasty goldish stripes. My initial reaction was: I see a badly exposed picture that hurts the eyes of a FUGLY dress.

Maybe if the photographer had a better camera, wasn't taking the picture through glass and didn't have a horrible back glare the colors would be clear. However it still doesn't change the fact that the dress is bloody ugly.

When I view this on my Macbook Pro with Retina display (IPS), I see white and gold no matter the angle of the laptop display. The wife noticed that if she changes the angle on her laptop display (TFT), the color does indeed range from white and gold to blue and black.

So, depending on your viewing angle and the technology used in your display, it could be either and a few in-between.

I see white/gold. It looks like the lighting is from the opposite side of it (it looks sort of like an outfit in a store window), and we're seeing it shaded, but definitely white/gold to me.

As a curious note, I took the image and copied into Paint. I did an eyedropper on one of the parts of the dress (what I see as white, I guess others see blue). Now, it is *slightly* more blue than others, but it's still veering towards the white spectrum (red 134, green 147, blue 189). The white/black/gray colors would be equal (for instance, white is 255-255-255).

As for the gold/black, still seeing a brown/gold (rgb 120-105-62).

PugnacAutMortem
02-27-2015, 01:25
It's definitely white and gold when I look directly at it...but when I look at the black fabric in the bottom left-hand corner the white immediately turns blue. I can then look back at the dress and it slowly fades from blue back to white.

It's far too late to be doing things like this to people, Brian...
