Im thinking of jumping into the long range rifle game and Ive priced out some components one of which is obviously a rifle.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise I want to get a Rem 700 SPS Varmint and right now Remington has a $50 rebate through June which basically covers transfer fee and BG check. My question is: Is there a time of year or season when we generally see rifles like these go on sale? or see the best deals? I know we are talking about a roughly $500 rifle here but if I can save another $50-$100 by waiting until x month I will. Also what are you thoughts on buying a used version?

This is definitely uncharted territory for me but Im excited to learn about distance shooting and application.

Thanks for the help!

Mac's Gunworks is selling a Remington 700 with aftermarket stock and bottom metal for $995 through ShooterReady. We are delivering one today if you would like to look at it.

Online auctions and Armslist are a good place to search.

I knew "Long Range Fever" was incurable, but didn't know it was so contagious!

I would seriously look into what quickdraw is recommending. there is not really a better or worse time to buy LR stuff for pricing. Winter seems to have better in-stock options and gunsmiths have a "somewhat" smaller backlog. Glass is just as important as a rifle, so budget and find scope at the same time you look for a rifle. I also think your better off buying more than you think you need at the beginning. Upgrading LR stuff is pricy and not easy like upgrading AR's.

Here is what I was planning:
Remington 700 SPS Varmint 308
Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44mm
GG&G Aluminum Sniper Grade Rings 30mm
Magpul Hunter 700 Stock (Maybe)
Timney Trigger

Roughly $1600 all in if I can find the right pricing. Its a budget build but I think I could have some fun with this setup.

Look at the other recent " first rifle " threads . The SPS stock is junk an will definitely need replaced . Ditch the GG&G rings , if your gonna spend that much on rings go Badger or Seekins. For cheap rings look at Burris XTR's . Will need a scope base as well .

I still think quickdraw's deal sounds better. He knows his LR stuff and would not steer you wrong. The Detachable Bottom Metal (DBM) & mags is a very nice upgrade. The Magpul stocks are still vapor-ware and require a DBM upgrade and proprietary mags that aren't included in the opening price-tag.

You may consider a higher magnification optic too 10x is not a lot, 15x or 20x is nice to have...
Take a look at the SWFA 3-15x similar price and a better optic.

I would pass on the GG&G rings in favor of Badgers/Seekins/EGW/TPS/Etc The "Sniper Grade" thing just sounds wrong...

Listen to quickdraw. That is a good deal! Another option is a Tikka T3 CTR. I got to mess withe one the other day and I was very impressed. It's on my list to buy now. Comes in a factory 260 option as well.

I just recommended this to a friend for a starter rifle. Throw a viper pst 6-24 ffp or an swfa fixed power scope, vortex pmr rings or seeekins (same rings), quality base and you will have a solid start.
