View Full Version : Tulsa reserve deputy interview
Pre-great crash of 2015 IIRC, there was a thread about a Tulsa reserve deputy, aged 73, who shoot and killed a suspect thinking he pulled his Tazer. He spoke with Matt Lauer and wow, what a terrible speaker. He even claims this could happen to anyone. How? I still don't understand how you mistake your firearm for a Tazer.

When you hit 73 get back to us. IMO he should have NEVER been allowed to wear a uniform.
Oh, man, that interview was painful. Obviously not adequately prepared. I can't imagine why the man (and his attorney) would agree to an interview on national television, especially given his impending prosecution.

This was actually one of the threads I was sad to see go away. We were just starting to get heated ;) lol

I wasn't saying it was all due to his age, although I don't know many 73 year olds who can keep up with the majority of the cops I work with (I would welcome any that can). But when I hit that age I hope to be retired and not called upon to chase down bad guys.
Never talk out before the trial. Now everybody knows the story and will finds wry hole in it.

WTF was he thinking agreeing to an interview with Matt Lauer of all people? 2nd biggest mistake of his life.
But I do feel sorry for the guy. He made a terrible mistake and he obviously feels terrible about it. At least he's owning his actions.

So you do know some 73 yr olds that can keep up with them? In other words, im glad you (and the guys you work with) are not in my county.

You going to start selling them?! I'm sure a matte black with SureFire lights everywhere and the necessary railed Ops Core helmet to match will sell well for the shopping malls.

Funny you should mention 73 year olds. Jack Palance was 73 when he won an Oscar for City Slickers:

but he died in the movie
How old was Robert Redford when he filmed his last movie?
I'm sure I'll get a bunch of shit for this but if I were him I'd have all kinds of family members lined up to talk about me leaving my keys in the fridge and wandering off from the house in my underwear in the cold for hours at a time. His response on the video proves he didn't know what he was doing. [Coffee] Personally, I think the officers that had things mostly under control are lucky they didn't take a bullet.

There's a BIG difference between reading lines for a script and using deadly force.

There were no lines. But usually I'd agree with you.

Kind of like when you mistake your 1911 for your power drill and blast a few holes in the hallway hanging pictures. It happens.. sometimes.. yeah.

From what I saw of the video, he did mistake his pistol for the Taser. You can hear the panic in his voice and his hope the shots weren't fatal when they're rushing to get to the guy he shot. The "oh crap" reaction was instantaneous so I doubt it was faked.

I believe he could of done it by accident, I just don't think “this could happen to anyone.” I am on the fence it it was a “accident” I think the guy could of also been caught up in the moment shot the guy then thought -WTF- did I just do.. ?
Or he could of just had muscle memory from training with a tazer in the same spot ?
In the interview he said he wears the tazer on the other side of his body and in a entirely different spot so that really makes me question the muscle memory theory.
Also I saw a small frame revolver on the ground I am not sure if that was the volunteer cops gun but if it was it is much different then a tazer in size, shape and feel which would make me doubt muscle memory even more.
I am a skeptical person I usually judge a person more from their action then a few words they mumble. I would not surprise me at all if the guy just wanted to get a kill under his belt and jumped at the wrong opportunity.

There is something very wrong with someone who thinks another human, especially a man he's never met, wants to get a "kill under his belt."

Chuck Norris is 71... I can only assume at his age he is probably still pretty fit. R. Lee Ermy is in his late 60's and would appear to still be able to handle himself. I personally don't know anyone in their 70's that could work the streets, but I'm sure some exist. Who was that fitness celebrity who could kick the crap out of people and he was in his late 80's?

There is something very naive about with someone who thinks that their is not people out there looking to kill other people.

Naw, there's something really wrong when the first or main thing popping in someone's head is that someone else is trying to get a "kill under his belt", especially if you saw the video I saw. Maybe the video I saw was the wrong shooting but the shooter was panicked and went to deliver medical attention immediately. Very definitely (IMO) a mistake and not someone looking to put a notch on his gun.

Your psychic powers are a bit off. That wasn't the "first or main thing" that popped into my head it is just a factor that -could be-. Just becouse something apperars one way in the media doesn't always mean that's it- open and shut.
There is a few factors going on that are kind of questionable, like what the hell was he even doing there.. ? He claims he is saving 14yr olds from "Drugs" is the common lame "save the kids" ecuse that usally sends a red flag to those of us that have seen this lame excuse get play out like a broken record player.

Well, in December I'll hit 79 years of age.. There are times when my response in need of an immediate decision on something is a little bit delayed due to the mind being sometimes in a little temporary "fog". I certainly do NOT want to have to make any life threatening snap decisions concerning whether or not to fire at someone. We oldtymers should let that stuff for you kids still in your 50's and 60's. I will just concentrate and stick to the rules of the road and maintain our required defensive driving.[blaster]
