View Full Version : 2015 Hunt Thread!
Since the previous thread was lost, I thought I would start this one up!
When can I expect to be notified of the tags I did or did not draw?
I submitted for elk and deer.
Thanks!
I believe the brochure said they would be mailed out the first week of June. Might be available online before though.

While here, I wanted to ask, who here puts in points for Moose? (possible new thread) I'm asking because a buddy of mine puts in for points every year but is waiting for that "one year" where he cashes in for the "one hunt".....I was thinking maybe doing the same.

I have 2 points for moose so have a ways to go... I plan to archery hunt for a bull anyone know approximately how many points that would take for a decent unit?

This year marked my 28th year to apply for moose, maybe the stars will align this year;).
There are folks who do draw in their first year of eligibility (4th year of applying), you can't draw if you don't apply.
Wow...28 years? Where are you putting in for that you haven't drawn yet?
same been putting in for moose since they started the points for them.

I've put in for many areas over the years, just usually looking to play the odds (apps versus tags) but then I noticed that in the reg booklets they explained the process (moose, sheep and goat are all the same process). Per CPW reg booklet:
10. WEIGHTED PREFERENCE increases your probability of drawing a moose license. It is calculated by converting your application number into a different application number, then dividing that new number by the amount of weighted points you have, plus one. This generates another new application number. Applications are sorted by this new number from lowest to highest and low numbers for each hunt code are awarded licenses.
I called CPW and asked for clarification how this number was computed and they said that your application number is converted into a "random" number and then this "random" number is what is divided by your weighted points plus one. So that begs the question in my mind, are we dealing with just "random" based solely on total number of applicants for that species or is this "random" number generated for 10, 11, 12... or how many digits? I haven't been able to get an answer on that.
So the way I see it, in reality, once you have your 3 points under your belt, it really is a lottery type of draw.
I'ts a POS system, both my daughter and SIL got their tags after only 3 years and both in the same year. My cuz has drawn 2 cow tags over the years.
When I went to the CPW they had nothing to say as they SUBCONTRACT the lottery to a company in TN.

I'ts a POS system .......
I think yes and no.
Looking at it from only my point of view with regards to me drawing a tag, it sucks.
Based on purely a cumulative point draw system such as deer and elk, I probably would have drawn a tag by now. This is true even with the point creep that would have occurred over all these years of applying.
However, when I look at it from my grandson's chances ( 12 years old), realistically, the current system is probably the best, if not the only, chance he'll ever have to hunt a moose here.
The first year I applied, there were 253 applicants for 3 bull tags. Last year that number was 19,957 (res and nr) applicants for 264 total tags, both bull and cow combined. Good news is that this year the proposed tags number 319.
With moose being the hardest tag to draw and with so much demand for so relatively few tags , I really don't know if there is a better draw process or not. If my grandson ever draws and I don't, so be it. I'd give up any chance I may have if I could gurantee him his tag.
Yeah but after 28 years they need to give you a tag.

Thanks for the support guys, but the current system or some rendition thereof is probably the best way.
Just using last years numbers as an example, it would take 75+ years for all applicants to draw a tag. You couple that with the ever increasing applicant pool, there is just no way that everyone who applies for a tag will get one.
After a certain # of years, those with the waited points should be placed in another draw separate from the "general" draw. Cut down on the YEARS, you have been waiting. Hell they will have to roll me out in a wheel chair by the time I get my tag.
When I talked with DOW, the guy told me the average wait is about 22 years... That's freaking nuts.
Sheep and goat results are posted. I add points to my total this year again bringing it to 3 with 7 weighted points. My dad however drew a Desert Bigorn Sheep Tag. I think I was just as excited for him as if it had been my name next to that tag. Lots of scouting and research to come in the following months.

I've got deer and elk muzzleloader in 58/581! Also psyched. Saw some turkeys last year and thinking about picking up an over the counter tag for them this year. Any recommendations on ammo for my 9mm for turkey?

Two weeks! Gotta get my ass to Cabellas to spend a few gift cards.
Heard my first bugle of the year last evening around 8:00.
Bull bugled about every five minutes and cows and calves were calling like crazy
I thought it might be some hunters who'd wandered onto my property because it didn't sound natural.
I drove down to check it out, and it was a large herd coaxing each other over a fence.
I parked and listened to them for a half hour.
Very cool.
Leaving thursday for my first archery trip... I've already chalked this week of work up as a loss! Ain't SHIT gonna get done there as it has taken a back seat to... Well... Pretty much everything! I'm so friggin' psyched!
I am going 2nd season rifle hunting this year, i really wanted to go archery, but after two surgeries this year i am not up for it yet. I still really want to harvest an animal with my bow. I am excited about small game starting last year was a great for doves.

Work schedule looks good for this fall, but when I went down to the CPW office they basically said "don't bother" regarding the leftover tags and OTC. Everything was either private-land only, private-land because that's all there is in the unit, or so little public land that it would be overcrowded.
Not entirely sure that the guy was just blowing me off because it was Friday afternoon just before closing, but checking the leftover license list at their website it pretty much looks that way.
Moral to the story is to put in for the draw and hope to have time to use them, instead of waiting to know about having time off.
