View Full Version : MRAP Breakdown
I saw this yesterday @ 1 PM near the intersection of Rampart rd and Waterton by Roxborough (and Lockheed Martin). These guys were 'testing it' for the Military and had an air line sever which controlled the transmission, it basically coasted to a stop. They fixed it with zip ties! I'd never seen one that close, impressive machine! I noticed the black boxes on the upper corners and GPS unit. I guess it's part of the testing.

Somebody stole their .50 cal......

Shhhhhhhhhhh!!!! ......[M2]
The front seats are like sitting on the ground on that type of MRAP. Hardly any legroom.
We had two when I was in the sandbox.
Dropped them off and said to us: "now figure out the commo".
Must have been nerve wracking to have to coast to a stop next to that debris on the side of the road...

That is the mechanics bag of zip ties on the ground, he is actually up behind the right rear wheel in that picture. Very nice crew to speak to. One guy said it was a South African design, had 3" thick glass windows (yes), massive hydraulic assist doors (said the passengers door was +2000 lb), and a standard crew of 7.
Like rbeau30 said, very little room to get comfy. its a small armoured cylinder with a bunch of boxes on the outside. I'd sure like to take one for a spin but it would really suck to ride in fast and bumpy!
These things had some kind of AC, right?

Yeah, they have AC. It actually works pretty well. And yeah, those doors will take your damn arm off if you're not careful... and that's not an exaggeration.
They said there are several different types or designs of MRAP in service, is that right? I was able to crawl around and look at the suspension of this vehicle, it was overkill +3 with coil springs that looked like a cartoon drawing, they were massive! I'm glad I've never had to take a serious ride in one of these, thanks to you guys who did.

Yes, there is several models of MRAP's. I've had the uncomfortable pleasure of riding in a few but they can take some abuse. Very top heavy and prone to roll though. So much so they have roll simulators that we had to get spun around in then evac from.
The AC was much better than the Up-armored HMMWV's we had.

Here is a pic of the one I was in at Ft Riley in 2008. For HMMWV's of course.

If that's the big motor pool on Custer Hill, I worked right across the street at MMC and pulled cable through that sumbitch over the headers on all the bay doors, etc. the summer of 1985.
Got out before they came into service. Saw a few kicking around, but they were for testing only.
I've heard they were having issues setting up comms in the early stages. And I thought a RATT rig was a pain in the back of a m151a2![Coffee]

That's one of the first generation versions. Everyone who deploys nowadays has to go through the rollover drill exercises as part of their "check off". I'm currently deployed and not in a combat zone at all and had to play in them.
A RATT rig? You mean, radio-teletype? That was RATT in the early '70's. I can't imagine it's the same thing now!

I thought MRAPs had a v-shaped bottom to direct a blast. I don't see that one the one pictured.
Look at the shape of the rear door, then check out the boxes and how they fill out the dead space to give the vehicle a more traditional appearance.

^^^^^ Irving's got it dead on. Early ones looked pretty goofy with the V-hull exposed. The never designs have more storage with the boxes. Fill em with crap and it slightly lowers the center of gravity, but not enough to really count.

Lol! Our unit still had them in the 80s!! they wound up upgrading somewhere mid 90's ah yes the good old infantry!! Lowest bidder with outdated parts and equipment!!

Yes there are multiple versions. "MRAP" is just a type of vehicle (mine-resistant armor protected)... like "AR-15" is a type of firearm, but there are various models and manufactures.
We had M-ATV's and RG's. The RG's were extremely underpowered, but weren't as cramped as the M-ATV's. From what I've heard from guys who've used em, the Cougar is currently the best.

Haven't played with a cougar, but I sure did like the M-ATV. Even got one to roll over once [Beer]
