View Full Version : Ideal role and lineup of suppressors?

Hey! I've just jumped into this NFA area and am proceeding to get balls deep with form 1's. I think I'm probably addicted at the moment and will end up making a number of cans when I have the shop time. I'm trying to identify the roles cans should perform and narrow down the directions and define what uses cans should be obtained to fill. So what do you think an ideal lineup of cans would look like? What ideal collection of suppressors would you like to have and what roles would you like them to fill?

So far I know I'm going with a super lightweight 22 suppressor, an 8" Ti external'd 308 brake attached suppressor (that I'd be restricted to less than two mags of rapid fire 223 through).

What else?

I went .30 cal first, then 5.56 and will do a .45 and a .22 next.

Ha! I do like the way you think but I think that could get excessive at the moment!

Do you enjoy having a dedicated 5.56 vs just making your 308 swap over?

My first can (in jail still) was a .30 cal. I wanted to be able to use it for other guns but it will primarily live its life on my 5.56 11.5 SBR. Next will be either a .22 DIY can or a dedicated 5.56.

Still waiting for both to get out of jail but the idea is they will stay on their respective guns. 8.5" .300 and a 11.5" 556. :) I did .30 first to interchange until everything is out of jail though. I like purpose built items, not a one size fits all.

Tell us a bit more about what you shoot today. You know what they say about opinions. Do you already have your host guns planned out, or are you thinking of buying more of those as well?

I will say that I don't swap cans often. Once they go on, they tend to stay there. Especially at the range, with any reasonable volume, they're going to be pretty hot and not something you're going to want to mess with spreading around. Doubly so if you care about precision/accuracy at all.

Related - did anyone ever arrange a "group buy" for parts? I have a bunch of guys interested now, we thought we might throw in together and see if we save a few bucks. Too many threads on making cans to keep up with lately.

The words Group Buy and suppressors will never be spoken here or other forums. Unless you need to crowd fund other peoples money to pay someone else.

I don't think they'd do a GB. HOWEVER it's something that should be discussed off line.

If you're a Licensed mfg you can do almost anything within the confines of the law.

LOL should have known better than to use that phrase. Bad move on my part. ;)

I was including the stamp in my calculation too. It made it seem a bit spendy- but I'm reconsidering.. See below.

I'll probably only suppress 4 rifles (center fire anyway) now that I really examine it- a 300 blackout sbr AR, a regular 5.56 AR, a 308 bolt gun and Scar 17. That's not nearly what I was thinking when I started thinking about suppressing everything.

I'm just going to do them all, thanks guys!

Do you see value in having brakes to ease blast baffle abuse? Are you using a FP or something beefed up for your first baffles (I know you have the ability to machine your own)?

brakes on the 7.62x39's average blast chamber is or will be 2", copying commercial cans. I'm not or intend to bump fire so the need for a brake on a 223 is minimal. The 2nd BYO (when ever it gets APPROVED!) will go on the MVP. Putting the AAC on the wifes AR.

A suppressed .22 should be on your list. It is REALLY fun.

If you haven't already, hear a few centerfire rifle cans in-person. Youtube is not a good reference.
