View Full Version : Is there a limit to how many pistols a person can buy per year in Colorado?
I had a guy tell me one can only buy five pistols per year in Colorado. Is this true or more "Stupid things you hear at a gun shop"?
No. Stupid gun counter talk.

That's gotta be what they tell him because he's too stupid to do business with.

You'd think most shops would love to sell the same person 5 guns a year.
It wasn't a shop, it was a knowitall. It sounded like bs, but when I'm not sure, I smile and nod.

I thought I remembered something about increased reporting requirements for the FFL if a person buys more than 1 gun in a 5 day period? Something like that. Could just be standard internet rumor crap.
Well... There's another list I'm on

This one is true - two or more pistols from the same person in a 5 day period.

Q: As a licensed dealer, must I advise ATF if I sell more than one handgun to an individual?
If you sell or dispose of more than one handgun to any non-licensee during a period of 5 consecutive business days, the sale must be reported on ATF Form 3310.4, Report of Multiple Sale or Other Disposition of Pistols and Revolvers, not later than the close of the business day on which you sold or disposed of the second handgun. The licensee must forward a copy of the ATF Form 3310.4 to the ATF office specified thereon, and another copy must be forwarded to the State police or local law enforcement agency where the sale occurred. A copy of the Form 3310.4 also must be attached to the firearms transaction record, ATF Form 4473, documenting the sale or disposition of the second handgun.
A business day for purposes of reporting multiple sales of pistols or revolvers is a day that a licensee conducts business pursuant to the license, regardless of whether State offices are open. The application of the term “business day” is, therefore, distinguishable from the term “business day” as used in the NICS context. Example: A licensee conducts business only on Saturdays and Sundays, days on which State offices are not open. The licensee sells a pistol to an unlicensed person on a Saturday. If that same unlicensed person acquires another handgun the next day (Sunday), the following Saturday or Sunday, or the Saturday after the reporting requirement would be triggered, the subsequent acquisition of a handgun would have to be reported on a Form 3310.4 by the close of the day upon which the second or subsequent handgun was sold.

I assume they'd be looking for straw purchases with that reporting requirement? I'll add getting reported on that form to my bucket list. The wife enforces some kind of 1 gun every six months rule. Hoping the NRA can help get that overturned.

Yeah, mostly for gun trafficking and straw purchases. If you didn't see the black helicopters within a couple days, or nobody from ATF called you after you bought those last two handguns at the same time, you probably don't have anything to worry about.
As for the 1 gun per 6 months rule... there used to be this thing called "Don't ask don't tell" but it didn't end up working so well either, so I'm not sure I'd risk it. ;)
My wife told me that I have a limit.
Mine says since I can't shoot more than one at a time I should only need one. She loves me in spite of our agreeing to disagree.

My wife tries to use that same logic, silly women.

Have you had that conversation with her about how many pairs of shoes she can wear at one time, never mind you'll loose.
I bought an entire six piece collection of S&W revolvers at one time from a dealer about four years ago. Had to fill out the multi hand gun form that I was told goes directly to the FBI.

My wife told me that I have a limit.
My wife thinks I have too many handguns and is encouraging me to buy more long guns! Hahaha
I'm already on so many lists that I'm on a list of People who are on Multiple Lists...[panic]
I usually don't get a wife imposed limit, but recently when I start looking I get reminded of our impending move and that we need to save the cash for closing costs. She caught me drooling over Ray's Rem 700 in the TP and realized I was trying to rationalize buying it.

Moves can suck for your deniability with the wife. We moved the reloading room/armory this last weekend, and the wife was shocked at how much was down there. Not to mention the grumbling of the guys helping us when we moved the lead for casting. She thinks I have a problem.

This may be somewhat true, but remind her of the ability to transition from a rifle to pistol... Then say you need to be versatile with different combinations of rifles and pistols to be more effective at keeping the family safe.

So she only has one pair of shoes? Or clothes? That would be like saying you only need 1 bottle of whiskey around...
So, the solution is A) Don't buy from the same FFL in a 5 day period (support multiple small businesses) B) Don't let the wife know about any of it.

WINNER!
My wife has become much more observant of my firearms, to the point of being able to recognize small differences such as a new fiber optic front sight on a pistol. I think that I am only a matter of months away from impending wife imposed purchase limits.
Buy her one, acts kind of like reset and start clock ticking again. Seems to last 6 mos to 2 yrs before another reset needed.
