View Full Version : Compiling list of ranges for Map, need help

With the Rampart closing I've been getting a few questions about my home range BLGC. This got me thinking, and I started looking in the "Places to Shoot" area. There isn't really a map showing where all the gun ranges in CO are located. I found this odd. I asked the thread mod about it and was given permission to try to put a map together.
OK, so here's the deal. I need help identifying all the ranges in CO, public and private. I also need some serious help in figuring out how to plot them all on a map that can be posted and stickied to the top of this forum area.
Here are the ranges I have shot at in CO and most have web sites:
Ben Lomand Gun Club
Aurora Gun Club
Cherry Creek Family Shooting Center
Boulder Rifle Club
Clear Creek County Rifle Club
High Plains Shooting Range
Pueblo West Sportsman's Assn
Whistling Pines Gun Club
The Firing Line
The Shootist Pistol Range
Pawnee Sportsman Center
This has been the best list I've found so far:
http://www.nrahq.org/shootingrange/findlocal.asp?State=CO
I have no idea how valid this list is.
Thanks for your help.
*UPDATED WITH GUN RANGE MAP LINK*
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...537e8510af&z=9 (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=111844454099970657498.000479c1cf7537e8510af&z=9)
I know a few.. But one does have to be up for a road trip... All nice ranges though.. At least they were when I was last there.
Hot Sulpher Springs- About 8 miles west of the town, on 40. Range out to 200 yrds. *was* maintained by DOW. Closed in winter..
Springfield Rifle range- If this one was closer, I'd be at it every weekend
15 miles south of Springfield.. Range to at least 1000 yrds, use to be an "antelope" at 800 yrds. Covered bench.
Las Animas Rifle range- About mid way between Las Animas and Adobe Resevoir. Bare bones, out to about 110 yrds.
Mike Higbee SWA. between Lamar and Granada on U.S. 50. Concrete benches out to 100 yrds.
Not saying any of them are "close". But, if You find yourself needing "to get away from it all" for awhile..
Did you ever make any progress on this? Seems like it would be a great resource.
Green Mountain Family Shooting center on Wadsworth and Jewel is a very nice indoor pistol range. They also have indoor 100 yard rifle range.
Dragonman's not on the list. He's here in Colorado Springs, has up to 220 yard rifle range. There is always a RO on duty on the 100 yrd range (rifle/pistol). Reputation as a jerk, but he's been more than nice to me and wife on all occasions. All clear to bring mg's and cans as long as you have your paperwork.
As far as putting a map together, might be best to .jpeg a google map, and just photoshop thumbtacks into it with small descriptors?...
I asked the thread mod about it and was given permission to try to put a map together.
It's easy to do this with Google Maps. You can then post a link to the map (and there's even a way to download the location data from the Google Map so you can plug it into other mapping software). PM me if you'd like help with this.
ETA: Also, I don't see the Silver Bullet Shooting Range on your list. It's a decent indoor range that allows not only pistols but also rifles up to .308.

Can additional locations be added to this map? If so, can a second party do it? How? I looked and couldn't see how. Can it be saved for future reference?
I've been kinda lax at finishing this project. If I can find a really good map we could post to this thread and manipulate appropriately, that would be the best starting point. I'm just not a teckie-geek type person, but I'm pretty sure the google map will have some of issues with above.
K, all you geek-squad guys posting on the "do for a living" thread, step on up here and get us a good digital map we can use for this project. Then, we set up a data critera input template for everyone to collect and enter into the map.
Yes, additional locations can be added. I just put this together quickly and haven't added all sites yet.
Yes, I can add collaborators to the map so they can edit it. You will need a Gmail account so that I can add you. Once added, you will have the option to edit it. There is an option to allow ANYBODY to edit it, but I wanted to keep it as accurate as possible. Opening it to anybody on the Internet would cause some issues.
It is already saved and will never go away, unless Google goes away. Google Maps allows you to save maps linked to your Gmail account. I have all kinds of maps saved for my personal use.
Google has no issues with us using their map software. It is essentially the exact same thing as Google Documents (document, spreadsheet, presentation), but it is setup to do mapping.
If someone has a better setup, I'm all for it.

Sounds like it will work. I don't have a Gmail acct, but if you're willing to tote the map on yours, we can all pitch the info to you for entry.
What would be a good data template?
Club name
Address
City, State, Zip
Web site (if it has one)
Private/Public
Lat/Long or Geocoords?
Range's accomidations?
Now that's what I like! This thread should be stickied, with maybe SA Friday editing the link into his first post so it's easy to find.
I was starting on a word doc that had a few listed and a couple map screenshots, but this is a much better way to do it. :)
Map has been updated with all thread listings to this point.
Does anybody know the LAT/LONG coordinates for the "North Site" and "South Site". I have never been to either spot (new to the forum). If you post them, I can add them to the map.

Very nice. That's good stuff.
Three more I can think of to add:
http://www.wcfw.org/ ( about a mile directly north of Galeton)
http://www.routtcountyrifleclub.com/ (In Steamboat)
I think there's an indoor gun range in Loveland too, Front Range Gun Club? I think?
Here is another one:
Wildlife Hunters Association of Colorado
http://www.WildlifeHunters.com (http://www.wildlifehunters.com/)
35500 E 144th Ave
Hudson, CO 80642
(Google Maps show the range about one mile farther East than what it actually is.
The entrance to the range is located on 144th Ave between Imboden Rd and Quail Run Rd).
I have added a few more as listed:
Steamboat, CO - Routt County Rifle Club
Hudson, CO - Wildlife Hunters Association of Colorado
I wasn't able to add:
Galeton, CO - WCFW.org (site is infected with virus). If someone has the information for this site, I can add it. I'm not willing to risk a virus just to visit their website.
Loveland, CO - Front Range Gun Club is no longer in business. There were leasing issues and the company changed hands. It is now called Gunsmoke, but I cannot find information regarding the new business. Please post if you are in Loveland and know the address, website, phone number, etc.
All locations added to the thread have been added to the map at this point.

You can shoot shotguns by the round charge, but pistol/rifle you need to be a member, except those 2-3 days a year they are open to the public in the fall for rifle site in... the weekend that members avoid.

The only way to shoot at Ft Carson's Privately Owned Weapons (POW) range is to have a valid DoD ID card. There is no open shooting at any time for anyone not authorized to shoot at the POW range. Active duty, retirees and dependants 12 years or older are the only authorized users.
Anyone with a range card along with one additional ID card holder can open the range (two person concept for safety reasons). The range is open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset. The only times they are closed is if there is training on an adjacent range, or if construction or grass cutting is being conducted in the immediate vicinity of the range.
It is a really nice range (now) with ten covered shooting positions (with benches) with target berms marked at 7, 15, 25, 50, 100, 200, & 300 yards. They provide the target stands, chairs, staples, targets....almost everything except your weapon, ammo, hearing and eye protection. No shotguns with pellets (slugs OK) and no full auto. Not sure why the no full auto since it is an Army post, but those are the rules they have.
Now that I'm retired, I have a hard time finding people to go shoot with me, and taking my wife along to be the other ID card holder is like pulling teeth.

I'm a DoD cardholder and haven't ever been to Ft Carson's range. What are the specifics for going there? Do you need to register your guns with them or get a special qualification card or anything?
Yes, all guns need to be registered with the Provost Marshal and this can be done at the Motor Vehicle registration (open only weekdays, I think 8-4 or so). It takes about a week to get the paperwork back.
If the Privately Owned Range (Range 1) is open, you can shoot with a DoD card. To open the range, all you need is a range safety card. You can get one by attending a safety course on Saturday at Range Control (I think it's usually held at 1 pm). All you need is one person with a yellow Range Safety card and another DoD card holder to open the range.

Thanks for the details AAdvsr.
No worries. Just noticed I repeated some of what TennVol already stated about the range. A bit of a pain to register the weapons, but well worth it for the access to the excellent facilities. Open dawn to dusk.
Thanks for your efforts KL7 (and SA Friday for starting this project off), this is a great resource!

Lead Valley Range, east of Byers, CO(about 15 miles btween mm 118 and mm 119 on hwy 36) membership required but very reasonable price.

Silver Bullet Shooting Range on Sheridan.

It would be really useful to indicate if the range is open to public or member only; any restriction in terms ammo type; and range fee.
For example, Firing Line in Aurora: Open to the public. 50-ft pistol range only. Separate public and member-only lanes. There is always a waiting list for the public area during weekends but rarely any wait for the member only area. Fee: $12 non-member, $6 member. Membership: $140 first year, $125 thereafter. Non-brass ammo ok.
Gun rental is $10 but you have to buy their ammo for rental.

I met a person when I was checking out at Gander Mountain Sport. He had a 1000-rd case in his cart. We chatted about the cost of ammo and shooting ranges. He told me that he went to a place just short drive south of Idaho Springs. It is in a national forest.
If anyone can point out on the map where this place is, it would be really great.

Just on the north end of Canon City the Royal Gorge Gun Club has a really good, and from what I've seen- under utilized range. Membership is required, and bring your own targets. They have a rimfire bay, pistol bays, Trap house, and rifle range (with pits) to 1300 yds. Shot a few of their pistol matches over the summer, pretty informal standard IDPA type shoots, same 8-12 shooters every time. Don't know if this place isn't getting used intentionally, if there are issues with range/club authority, or if nobody knows about it. Figured I'd toss it out there.

East of Sterling is the Red Hill Gun Club. It's private, costs about $100 the first year and then goes down to $50 or something like that (I can't remember what I paid last year) depending if you take part in the annual clean up day.
No RO so it's informal and you have to provide your own targets of course. Has a pistol area out to 100 yards, and 50, 100, and 200 yard ranges. It also has a 235 yard metal gong and if no one else is there there is a table set 100 yards back from the others that makes it a 300 yard range.
When you get your membership they give you a key to the gate and you can bring as many guests at a time as you want.
You just have to watch out for the cattle that wander through every once in a while.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the rifle tables are 4-6" concrete in a T shape with 6-8" steel pipe sunk into the ground for bases, rock solid.

http://www.riversedgeoutdoors.us/ Southeast of Pueblo, used to be Cottonwood Sporting Clays, now it's owned by the owners of Arctic Shooting Supplies and they have rifle and pistol ranges.
Also, Mesa Shooters has a range near the Comanche power plant, but there's always a waiting list to join. A pretty simple range, but handy to the south side of Pueblo. No website, but I can get contact info if anyone wants it.
Also, not quite Colorado, but the nicest range most of us will likely ever see, The NRA Whittington Center www.nrawc.org (http://www.nrawc.org). Family membership is $35 per year (unless they've changed it again), no waiting list and you do not have to be an NRA member. It's about a 2.5 hour drive from Colorado Springs, and they have very nice, affordable housing.
Don't know if you are still updating the map but here's another. Looks like most of the shooting is going on over on the front range.
Stengels Gunshop is a decent place for the western slope. He hosts hi power shoots every month, pistol shoots quite often and has a Billy Dixon shoot every year. 1000+ yard range.

Green Mountain Family Shooting Center is now Blue Core Shooting Range, and will open around the end of the month.

Updated GMFSC to BluCore Shooting Center. Added link to their new website.
Great guns in nunn CO is a good range. 3 rifle ranges a pistol range and lots of sporting clays. $ 75 upfront fee then $15 a month. Or $ 15 for two hours then $ 5 each hour after. I have never had them ask for more than $ 15 even when I stay more than two hours

Here's a semi official national forest range not too far from the Metro area. I looked to see if anyone had mentioned it anywhere here but it didn't look like it. The range is not very long but has steep hills on all but one side. Great for your run-and-gun AR and pistol fun. It is also closer to western Denver than the South Site (about 50 mins from C470 and 285).
14.7 Miles south on Co Rd 126 from the light in Pine Junction (Hwy 285 and Co Rd 126). It's your first right hand turn after you pass Redskin Creek Road that goes to Wellington Lake.

Anyone go there? I think we need to name this site...any ideas?
Please keep it clean!!!!

If this is the one I'm thinking about, it's a pretty confined area. 25yds max, almost useless for rifle and fills up quickly on weekends with shooters.
There is another place about quarter mile farther down the road also on the right that has a little more space, not much though.
Damn shame, wish there were more FS areas closer.
OK everyone, you have been asking and we have been promising. The Rifle Range is NOW OPEN.
Our rates are:
$24 per hour per person. And,
$20 for a rifle/pistol combo per hour per person.
Some people have hinted that our rates went up, they did. But we also extended the time from 30 mins to 1 hour. GMFSC was charging $21 for 30mins.
So hurry up and come see us before the lanes fill up.

There's a place south of Buena Vista. I haven't been there, but I've read about it.

Living in Castle Rock, I'd love to find a place that's close. I can go shooting on Fridays. If anyone's interested, let me know. :-)

Don't know if anybody has listed it, but Wildlife Hunters Association of Colorado (WHAC) has a range east of Brighton, I think the dues are $200 per year, open most days, except when they have classes or training (Appleseed runs classes there and at least one SWAT team takes over the pistol range some weekdays), and they do close the road leading in sometimes if it's too muddy (crosses private land).

CYSOTO also on this board manages WHAC. They are at their membership cap and have a wait list. http://www.wildlifehunters.com/

Many many many thanks for the updated list.
I thought the North Site and Lefthand Canyon were both closed
Seems that Great Guns Sporting in Nunn, CO isn't on the map. http://greatgunssporting.com/
This is probably already listed, but I'll drop it in anyway.

The Mrs and I came across this place a couple months back:
Located about two miles north of Rainbow Creek Riding Area on Hwy. 67 North of Woodland Park in the Hayden burn area. It's not great, but it's free, has about 12 shooting areas 300+ yards. separated from one another, a couple of them slow for 100-200 shots. BYO everything, no facilities, and most people leave their garbage behind, but it exists.
There's a pin on the map about 5 miles north of Lake George. It's labeled Co Rd 453, Lake George, CO 80827 / Mule Creek Outfitters / M Lazy C Ranch but not exactly at the ranch.

Does anyone know if it's ranch (lease) property or just Pike Natl forest land that's a shooting spot in that area?
On google maps, it almost looks like there's shooting berms at the north end of the (dude) ranch proper, but can't tell for sure if I need to call them to use the facility or it's elsewhere in the area.
ETA: Just read through the thread again and see it is M Lazy C ranch that has the berms. I'll reach out to them and ask a few questions if they would allow walk in. I have a bunch of family (like 18 cousins/spouses total) coming in for a campout in lake George and they might want to do a little shooting if we can find a place. Last time I was back home in WI we hung out and did some plinking. One of my cousins inherited one of her father's and one of her brother's guns and we gave her a little instruction and guidance.

I was the last guy running the 3-gun there a while back. It ended a few years ago when the owner retired and ownership changed hands. On my way out I advocated for them to let the cowboy shooters keep going since their match was way lower maintenance. I'd be interested in hearing if the range is still going. It was a small but awesome range with a lot of unique features.
EDIT: Just checked the ranch's web site. No mention of the range at all and it looks like they're catering to a whole different crowd these days.

Just a guess, but I expect "liability" to be a barrier here.
South site isn't out of the question, but it's a 40 minute or so drive. Maybe Sunday if they get going early enough for the Pike's Peak or bust "challenge", we could divert on the trek back, but if it looks like this, not sure I want to take them there.
Fkn sad.
