View Full Version : Revisiting the M&P Shield 9mm

This is a cross post from another forum that I figured i'd share here:
Shortly after the Shield came out, like many, I had to have one. After a couple range sessions I found the grip was too thin for me, and despite the better than standard M&P trigger being put in the shield, I just wasn't a fan. Carrying the shield was nice, recoil for such a small pistol was nice, but grip and trigger weren't cutting it for me. I must disclose, I've been a Glock guy for many years, which would explain the dislike of the grip and especially the trigger.
Fast forward to current time, I picked up an M&P9c with an apex trigger installed, and instantly fell in love. This got me to thinking, could I fall in love with the Shield if it had the same trigger? I don't know let's find out. I decided to go all in with this one and address all concerns I had.
1) Bought brand new Shield
2) Had Ameriglo pro I dot sights installed (which are also on my M&Pc)
3) Have apex carry/duty kit with aluminum trigger installed.
4) Install Talon rubberized grips.
All I can say is WOW, this may now be the perfect CCW pistol! The trigger is leaps and bounds better than my beloved Glock trigger, the thin grip with the Talon grips is no longer an issue, and I'm more accurate with it than I remember being with my last Shield.
I'd always heard good things about the Apex system, but never tried it, as the Glock was "perfection" in my head. Now I've got much better ergonomics, and a much better trigger, what's not to love. Keep in mind these mods quickly turn your $400+/- Shield into a $700 Shield, so this certainly isn't for everyone (I ended up offloading another pistol after this Shield project).
I've got a 7 round and three 8 round mags for this pistol, so I can pack as heavy or as light as I wish, and I'm perfectly comfortable with 32 rounds at my disposal. I'm fairly certain this Shield just won 99.9% of carry duty, and I won't put money on it, but this pistol isn't going anywhere, in fact now that I've discovered M&P + Apex, the Glock hooker may be no more.......

It's one of three or four I'm considering purchasing soon.

Absolutely, let me know when.
I never thought the shield ha a better than standard trigger, I actually thought it felt worse so I also went with an apex. I have slightly larger hands (2-3XL), and handling it is no problem.
I would also like to add that being a glock fanboi, I wont ditch it for a 43.

I'd like to try them both (Shield vs 43) side by side in person... I'm never trusting of online reviews.

One thing to mention, which I forgot to put in the original post. I was looking for the perfect combination of deep conceal ability (pocket if needed), along with full size attributes (sights, trigger, etc.), the Shield gives me all of this.
Apex makes a noticeable difference . . . even if you don't go with the actual trigger replacement itself. Did it on mine and also have the Talon Grips (still on the first pair, 2 years later). Just got some Ameriglo night sights yesterday to put on. Love that gun.
Someday, I may look into doing the actual Apex trigger swap. But the Shield factory trigger with the Apex springs/sear/striker-block is much improved.

I have basically the exact same setup. I share your opinion of the Apex DCAEK but all I can say about the Talons is meh. Have had them for four months and they are peeling in 2 spots, badly. I religiously followed the instruction guidelines, and I expected more. Maybe I haven't read enough about them and it's something you have to replace periodically, but if so, I may try stippling next.

And I've done the stippling thing, it's great in theory, and feels pretty good in the hand, but my style of stippling was just too abrasive for daily carry. I haven't had the Talons too long, so we shall see how they hold up, the way they feel to me, I'd probably consider replacing them twice a year if need be.

Give Talon Grips a call . . . see if they can do anything for you. They are only guaranteed for 90 days. I had one corner that was peeling and this was well after their warranty period was past. They sent me another pair anyway. I decided to just trim off the little corner that was peeling for the heck of it, just to cover myself til the replacement arrived. The rest of the grip held perfectly until just recently . . . got a couple other spots peeling now in less critical areas but I'm waaaaaaay beyond their expected life. I'll probably throw on that replacement this summer.

Been running a stock Shield for a year now apendix carry. Love it. I have 2 full size M&P's with all the bells and whistles. Also run a Nighthawk custom and a Wilson CQB for concealed. I just got a set of Ameriglo Pro sights for the Shield, to match (somewhat) everything else. I think the Shield is perfect for its roll. Easy, lightweight concealment. I could dump a bunch a cashola in it but it is what it is.

Apendix here as well, that is for all my pistols tho.
I agree the Shield is perfect for it's roll, which is why I invested the money in it. The pistol really was perfect, except for trigger and getting a good purchase on the grip. Now both of those issues are solved.

This isn't a comparison thread, but I figured it was worth showing, for those considering a single stack vs double.
M&P9c on the left, Shield on the right.

No prob. I've rejected single stacks for a long time, as I've always been the type to carry as much ammo as possible, but lately I've started to realize I don't need 50 rounds worth of ammo on my person, and as stated in my previous post, I've got Shield mags to accommodate 32 rounds if I feel the need.
With the capacity issue in mind, that is why I wanted the smallest pistol with full size features that I could find. The Shield has delivered.

I like how they feel, but not enough to replace them 2x a year. Still not completely sold on stippling either as if I don't like it I'm left with it permanently.

I went looking around to see if I could find an expected life and found in their FAQ that aerosol cleaners can affect the adhesive. It's possible I guess that besides being worn everyday the ballistol or powderblast I used may have gotten to them. Regardlesss they state only that they MAY last years, depending on use. That isn't too helpful. I sure did like the grippy though. I'm not too concerned about calling them though, if they're beyond the warranty aand they aren't supposed to last all that long, they are, NBD. I'll just look for some other solution

Per our quick sight discussion in the universal sight tool thread a few days ago, I got mine changed. Thought I'd move it over here, if that's cool.?
The factory sights were tight but moved after a few good whacks. Used a 16 oz ball peen and a steel punch. I wrapped the punch in masking tape a few rounds to try not to mare anything. I got about 4 or 5 hits before I broke through the tape and had to retape. Probably took 10-15 good hits before they broke loose. New ones went in easy. I replaced the factory with the Ameriglo Pro front with a black ledge rear. Big front dot with a tritium insert. Picks up really fast!
I might have been talking silly the other night when I posted I might not stick money in my Shield......well I was doing some dry fire practice with my full size M&P with an Apex trigger, well..... I may need one! [emoji56]

Like yours without the rear tritium. Have a set coming tomorrow for the full size. Have them eyeballed. I'll install my other set tomorrow night and then bring them up to the shop and mic them and loctite the set screws.

Very nice, I really like that Ameriglo started doing the rear "U notch" style, I really feel it's easier to pic up the front sight with the u notch.
I installed some Ameriglo's on the Shield yesterday. I think that will end up being a good purchase. I'm still largely a noob, but trying to be adventurous and learn/do what I can on my own.

I actually prefer to do most things myself, in fact I wanted to install the Apex on my own, but figured since Rob (at Bowers) was doing the sights, I'd just have him do the whole thing (all free of charge). I'd have no problem installing the sights, it's getting them aligned perfect that I don't want to try. I trust Rob, and know he'll stand behind his work.

Ran another 250 rounds through the Shield today, including 50 rounds of 147 grain HST +P, and 50 rounds of 124 grain HST +P. I'm quite surprised how this thing handles the hotter loads (something I wasn't getting from the little Kahr CM9 I had). I actually enjoy shooting this thing more than many of the full size pistols I have/had.

I like it a lot, and that's saying something, as I swore off indoor/private ranges in favor of shooting on National Forrest land.
I believe there are 9 lanes, you can shoot rifle, shotgun (slugs), and obviously handguns. Your first time in, you sign up on an IPad, and you get a key chain deal that they scan when you go in. It's $22 per trip ($17 for law enforcement), or $40 a month for unlimited shooting. If I can get set up to reload 9mm and 5.56 I'm thinking about the monthly membership.
The first time I went was mid week around 2pm, it was only me and one other guy. Today I went around 3pm, and it was full, but I only had to wait about 10 minutes for a lane to open up. I definitely recommend at least checking it out, the staff are really nice, and not overzealous, as long as you are safe.

Finally got to handle the G43 today. I must say I was quite disappointed. The grip compared to the shield was the biggest downfall, and it felt like it would shift around quite a bit while firing. Maybe with some Talons it would be different, but for the price of the G43, I don't think I'm willing to take the risk.

Well hell, maybe I should have gone to the range instead of finally trading off my 40c lol
To add to this, I've been using the Shield (9mm), with Apex DCAEK (stock trigger), Ameriglo I-dot front sight and Talon grip wrap as my ccw gun for a solid two months. On Saturday I took an advanced pistol class and used it. Everyone else had a Glock (19/17 and a 23). The instructor actually was using a Springer XD midsize (he won it and wanted to give it a run).
My Shield was 100% reliable, fast, accurate and flawless. The biggest eye opener is that I need to work on my mag changes as the little mags are a just a tad harder to get into action than the full size M&P mags for that gun. At least for this old fart I'm better/faster with the full size M&P when it comes to mag changes.

Good to hear, these little Shields really are some of the best CCW pistols in my opinion. I've not been this pleased with a pistol in a long time.

Considering listing the pistol in the original post, just to give you guys something to think about.
Not that I don't absolutely love the pistol (as stated in the original post), but I bought the G43 with the understanding that I'd try them both out side by side, and keep whichever one worked best for me. So far the 43 is winning by a slight margin.

I still think the Shield feels better in the hand, but for me the better feeling pistol hasn't always been the better shooting pistol. As awesome as the Apex trigger is, I'm still shooting better with the Glock trigger. That coupled with the G43 being slightly easier to pocket carry.
I love my Shield for carrying.

Do it! Buy it at Bowers and the install is free! I have the Duty/Carry kit with stock trigger and for a self defense set-up it's awesome.
That would be attractive except for the necessity of coming within 25 miles of Denver/Aurora. I only go there when I absolutely have to.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger (hardy har har) on an apex kit with the aluminum trigger. Have the apex in my full size and really like it. So I also ordered the aluminum trigger for it. Looking forward to it!

You won't be disappointed!
If they make the shield in 45ACP I want one.
Just saying.
Seemed like an appropriate place to make a wish. Since it's a thread about the shield.

I'd be down with that. Be interesting to see how much it would grow to get the same mag capacity.

Once you start getting to seven or eight rounds of 45 in a single stack the grip gets pretty long. Close to 1911 territory. I'd be cool with a five or six round capacity to keep it small.

I'd be ok with the grip length growing.. 6-7 rounds would be fine. I carry a commander 1911 also. And I bet the weight savings would be tremendous. I'd like to see them keep the width down as much as possible if they ever went that route. Just grow the 9mm version juuust big enough to shoehorn in the 45.

Well it only took 2 months. But finally got the Apex kit installed this morning. Going out to run it tonight. It feels sweet.

So ran 100 rounds through the Shield tonight. Awesome trigger now. Love it. Super clean break and reset. I also put the aluminum trigger on the full size. (Already had the carry kit in it) Ran 100 rounds through it also. I dont know what the difference is between the 2, but the Shield has a much better break. The full size is awesome but doesn't have the crisp break as the Shield. I'm happy with both. Just need to get some more rounds down range.

The APEX in my 40c is definitely not as crisp as one might think.

Where did you get the grip tape for your full size? My wife has been wanting a carry pistol and I think I'll point her towards the Shield first.

It was very squishy at first. I would pull it all the back till it pretty much bottomed out and then had to give it just a little extra squeeze for it to break. I adjusted the opening on the little "candy cane" on the trigger bar. Opened it up just slightly and it got a bit better. Didn't feel like it was bottoming out. As I said it's nice, just doesn't have that crisp break as the shield does.

The break on mine is crisp enough, but the reset is not at all significant.

Anyone have a good option for an IWB mag carrier for the Shield? Maybe it was mentioned, didn't go back though the thread. I carry appendix and want something small, single clip/loop, that I put appendix next to my Phlster holster.

I'm actually in the market for a double stack mag carrier, and will be hitting up Hbar when funds allow, likely something that will match the two holsters he's already made me.

Yeah is stuff is killer. One of these days when I need a holster I'll hit him up. Hadn't seen any mag carriers from him yet. Might be an option.
I was looking into the Phlster mag carriers, but they are like $42 and 4 weeks. That's to damn much for a single mag carrier. But to like the style.

That is a good looking carrier, but I agree, too much coin. I think Hbar can make you just about anything you want.

Zombie thread!
I was browsing around Sportsman's today while my wife got her hair cut, and noticed Shields have gone up in price. If I remember correctly they wanted $468 for one. I remember paying $399 at Sportsman's just over a year ago.
I think they were like $410ish at Bristlecone yesterday. .45 was $440ish
ETA: I'd like to shoot the .45 if they put one up for rental.

Yea, and they added a premium to the Performance Center (ported) version. Extra $50 I believe.

If anyone ends up with the 45 version of the Shield I wouldn't mind running a few rounds through one.

That's a really hard to beat deal. I've had good experiences with KY Gun Co with the purchases I have made from them.
