Just wondering if any of you all go mountain biking? It's that time of year and would like to meet up sometime and hot some trails with you all that do. Where do you go? What do you ride? I personally love lair o the bear, 18 roads and waterton canyon :)

Got a '97 vintage of this frame (different components). Check out the '97 Bike magazine, with Tinker Juarez on the cover. That is the bike I own (candy apple red).

After a couple year hiatus, I'm getting back in the saddle.

The mountains suck for biking right now. In a couple of weeks, the trails should be dry enough.

For the longer legged, I have a Mongoose Rockadile, 21", aluminum frame bike fore sale. It needs some work but is a nice ride. The frame is based on the old Yeti (When John Turner owned Yeti) frame design.

In my younger days and when I was stationed in Cali I was mountain biking all the time. The past 6 or so years in Virginia, not so much. I just got my 01 Santa Cruz Heckler X tuned up and I'm dying to go.

I really need to try & ride some this summer. I found an NRS 3 in decent shape on CL last spring which was a significant upgrade from a really old Stumpjumper hardtail that I bought off a buddy years back (still have it, but it's really showing its age). Got the NRS tuned up and ready to ride and then didn't do much with it last year.

I ride North Table almost exclusively for mtb anymore at this point, usually after work.
I do have an XC 29er, but really prefer to take the fatbike too.
More enjoy the fitness aspect than anything technical.

When I lived in Denver LOTB and Mt Falcon were my go to rides. Now I'm down south, Pueblo Res has over 30 miles of single track. I picked up a Bantam and love it, but I still ride my 99 Chameleon about once a week. Anyone down here want to do a day trip to Oil Well Flats?

I have been cruising around the high line canal, waterton canyon, platte river and places around Sth Wst Denver. I live by Chatfield res so I usually just go somewhere close.

I got a 2013 specialized last year after having a 2004 for almost 10 years. The 2013 has the 29" wheels I think I liked the 26" better but it is nice to have a new bike the old one was spent, lol

We should all plan a day to ride, if this weather ever breaks! I had a 29r and liked it a lot, more of a 26 guy though. I have been wanting to try a 27.5 and see how that is, and the fat bikes look like a blast!!

yeah sounds fun, I am usally up for a ride.

There have more than a couple times where I wish I had a 29er. That little bit of pedal clearance makes a big difference. But you really have to get used to the higher center of gravity. As I get a older and going up becomes more of a priority than hauling ass down; I am really starting to lean towards a 29er. But there is still that downhill voice inside of me that screams out when I turn back down. I cant afford any more reconstructive surgeries from accidents though.

I like the 29s on flat ground they cruz better and it seems like I get more from my work, The big draw back for me is my feet hit the front tire sometimes when I am going slow and I feel more clumsy. I just have much more control over a bike with 26" wheels.

I am totally on the same page with you and the downhill, I would not want to take the 29 on intense downhill runs, but then I wonder if I really should be doing that anyway. lol

05-04-2015, 22:50

i have a friend who is 42 and still rides around on his 1987 GT performer, he don't care what people say or think, just says he enjoys it lol

Thanks! The first is at Brainard Lake looking to the Indian Peaks; Mount Audubon on the right, Pawnee Pass a little to the left. Bike is a Giant Revel 1.

Second pic is from my yard looking east to the Grand Mesa.

Here's another at Brainard. My favorite XC ski trail is the Sourdough trail that begins from near Brainard and goes 10.5 miles down to Peaceful Valley where my cabin is. Have done it a couple hundred times on foot and skis, only once on the bike so far. It's a bitchin' ride.

I used to have a transition trail-or-park, and honestly I loved it. I used it for all kinds of riding, from elevated log bridge to slope style and it was fantastic. I beat the crap out of that bike, and it returned the favor from time to time. It was nice to not worry about gear ratios, and it was smooth and balanced in the air. I took it down Exit 27 in WA and preferred it to my downhill bike.

I really want one! Saw a Haro 24" BMX today that looked like so much fun lol!!!!!

Awesome stuff, easy rides, beautiful and not a lot of climbing like CO. Just need to watch out for rattlers and thorns. I have tubeless tires with stan's no tubes inside so I had zero flats.

Bumping this up again, the weather has been great! My move to Littleton has us right by the Platte, so I picked up a used Trek (entry level, nothing fancy, but couldn't beat $40 for an 06 in good condition). What tires are you guys using for mainly paved paths with the occasional dirt trail? I figure rides up and down the Platte, Waterton Canyon, Deer Creek canyon, etc. I'd eventually like to get something full suspension and get a bit more serious, but with it comes $$.

Jeffrey Lebowski

Run what you got, if you can.
If you can't, get whatever XC tire is on sale. Nothing too knobby should suffice.

I should have been more specific. The tires currently on the bike will need replaced soon, it has your standard size 26x2.00 mountain bike tires (Bontrager connection trail). I'm thinking about going with something a bit narrower and less aggressive more suited for the road, but aggressive enough to handle some dirt.

SSChameleon
03-13-2016, 16:30
Geaux AKA are a good choice. They are inexpensive with tight packed knobs so they roll easy on the pavement.

Jeffrey Lebowski
03-13-2016, 17:30
Yeah, good call. AKA Pluma is even less aggressive. I have a different set of Geax on my 29er right now, moderately non-aggressive, and they're OK.

I wouldn't go too narrow, depending on your rims, though.

Thanks for the replies gents, unfortunately after taking the bike for a ride today I think it may be one frame size too small. I knew it was right on the edge of too small at 16", but I thought my short inseem would make up for it. So far this is where I'm at with the search, maybe you guys can help me make a choice.

Bike #1- http://www.bicyclebluebook.com/searchlistingdetail.aspx?id=92367

Seller has it listed at $200 and it needs a chain, so unless he's willing to come down quite a bit, i'll likely pass.

Bike #2- http://www.bicyclebluebook.com/searchlistingdetail.aspx?id=11122

This one is at $50 and is the same bike I just bought, just a bigger size.

The only thing I know about as far as specs, is that the Specialized has a larger fork, other than that, I don't know the differences. If I could get the specialized down a bit, I think I'd prefer that one, but what do the experts think?

SSChameleon
03-14-2016, 11:52
If bike #2 fits and you like it, go with it. Don't expect much from fork on either one. At those price points the forks are window dressing. Specialized and Trek are both reputable companies. Pay attention to the drive trains. Depending on why the Specialized needs a chain, you may have to replace the drive train as well since a new chain won't shift properly on a worn drive train.

At $50 the trek doesn't have much value to lose if you decide you don't like it. That being said, mountain biking, like all awesome hobbies (hunting, fishing, camping, home brewing, archery) increase in price very quickly. You will soon be wanting something lighter with better brakes and nicer fork and before you know it you are into full suspension (a decent full squish bike starts in the $1,500 range for used) and taking a second mortgage on the house.

Just like with firearms, you want to buy once and cry once. Unlike firearms, bikes do not hold their value over time.

Thanks for the response, I'd definitely like for the MTB thing to become a "hobby" down the road, at this point however, it's just something fun and healthy for the family to do on the weekend, and there are plenty of good paths and such to ride on. Can't really afford to buy once cry once at this point.

Just found a 99 GT Rebound in really good condition, and the guy only wants a case of beer for it lol. At 1.8" of travel, that fork is definitely only for looks, I wouldn't mind upgrading if I end up liking the bike. Not bad for a classic "post merger" GT.

I agree, I've been a casual rider (mainly for fitness not so much sport) on and off for the last ten years, only ever riding entry level and older mountain bikes. I've always wanted to get more serious about riding, but never pulled the trigger on a "serious" bike. Now it seems like that goal is further and further out of reach, because if I had the money to throw down on a quality full suspension mountain bike, I'd just get back into dirt biking, as from what I'm seeing, some of these MT bikes are more expensive than a good newer dirt bike.

2000 dollar bike is about 12-13 hundred. thats a full suspension Specialized.
1100 dollar bike is 650ish..

Man, ya'll are making me jealous with your sweet bikes! On a side note, I'm thinking about turning this "case of beer GT" into a little project to learn more about bikes. Where is a good place to start for components? What fits most of the "standard" mountain bikes? Definite newb when it comes to working on bikes. Maybe upgrade the forks, it needs a tune up, maybe I could upgrade the components while I'm at it with some decent quality used stuff. If anyone has any decent components taking up space, I may be interested.

SSChameleon
03-16-2016, 13:50
The price of components follow an inverted bell curve. When they first come out they are the latest and greatest and the price is sky high. Then the price drops for a few years. Then you find out that one component is the last one in existence and if you don't have it you will have to upgrade everything (brakes, shifters, cranks, etc) to the current standard and the price shoots back up.

Having disk brakes is a plus. I have a 1999 Santa Cruz and I can't find decent wheels that use rim brakes anymore. Current standards are trending toward tapered headsets and thru axel wheels. That being said, there are plenty of old school bikes out there still rocking straight headsets and quick release wheels that you have a few years where you can still find decent parts for that classic bike.

A good practice is to ride as much as you can, then upgrade the components as they wear out.

There is a bike shop called Pedal a couple blocks from me, so I decided to stop in and check it out yesterday. Awesome place, spoke with a gentleman by the name of Bill who was working, and he was really helpful, gave me a couple maps of bike trails and such. He did however re afirm what SSChameleon said on components, leaving me not so optimistic on my project GT. I guess we'll see how that goes, if I run out of room it will likely go, but otherwise I may hang onto it and tinker as I go, it's a really cool bike, and something about getting it for a case of beer makes me want to bring it to life lol.

Lots of Craigslist finds available. Name brand bikes for cheap. Unless I'm going all out on a full suspension bike, I'll likely never buy new in the future, as I'm finding even brand name bikes dramatically lose value. Plenty of Craigslist sellers still think their ten year old bike is worth close to what they paid new tho.

My item $40 value. 2002 Giant Rainier, allegedly has a bent front rim, but it's hard to tell, needs a chain and front brake pads. The fork is an air fork, and definitely needs recharged. Do these types of forks just take a shot of regular compressor air, or is it something a shop would need to do?

While the bike needs some clean-up, a tune, and a couple parts, it's a good step up from the Trek 3900 I have, which will likely go to the wife. Hopefully I can get this thing squared away, as it's exactly what I'm looking for to get started in the MTB world.

Good to know, glad I asked, I probably would have just ran by the gas station and started filling lol. Hoping these brakes take standard pads that are still being used today, trying to cross reference part numbers and such could be a pain.

Hopefully not, I think you can install new seals, but I'm still a newb to this stuff. The previous owner definitely neglected this bike, it seems like it sat for a bit in the elements, not long enough to cause permanent damage, but enough to where it needs some elbow grease put into it.

Well, I'm not sure how quickly this Giant project is going to get off the ground (if at all). Guy at the bike shop said the fork is toast, and since Marzocchi is out of business, you can't get parts. Needs new front wheel, chain, etc. I did source some lightly used Avid BB7 calipers and levers, with pads for a steal, haven't jumped on them yet, not sure where to go with this one. If anyone has any cheap parts to get rid of, let me know lol.

Just saw this, I may take you up on your offer, I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to move forward with this project or not, really like the bike, but don't want to dump more into it than its worth. Found the exact fork I need in brand new condition, but I think the guy might be a little steep on his price, claiming it's rare. Well I picked up an 07 Specialized Hardrock, and a 2 child trailer for a really good price today, so i'll likely just scrap the Giant, may take off the Deore components, clean them up, and slap them on the Specialized. The Hardrock has a disc conversion with BB5 brakes, and upgraded (compared to factory) wheels. With Deore components, and a better fork, it would be a pretty decent setup, but really I just want to ride, so that stuff can come later. I demoed a kona at crank works. I went off a jump and went to turn and my handlebars moved but the wheel didn't. Ran straight into a tree. Tightened everything down made it about 500 feet before the rear derailed fell off.

This was probably all because it was a demo bike. But I still won't ever ride one again.

So I picked up the Kona, overall in pretty good condition, needs a good cleaning and a tune up, but it definitely shifts a lot smoother than the Specialized, I'm guessing due to the higher quality components. The Kona is heavy, but like I said before, I'm not terribly worried about weight at this point. Hard to hit anything rough with a trailer and 2 kids behind me tho, I guess we can call it "conditioning" lol. Seems like I've got everything dialed in about right for me, seat height and what not. I still need to figure out these brakes, I don't think they are nearly as good as they should be for discs. At any rate, I think the bug has bit as I'm out riding as often as possible. I know I'd enjoy the dirt even more, it's what I grew up on (dirtbikes).

Googled the Kula Deluxe, sweet looking rig for sure, one of the pricier hard tails I've seen lol.
Thankfully I didn't pay anywhere MSRP. I got it just under 1600.

Sounds like you're hooked. Check the pads, they could be glazed. I totaled pads and discs at Sylvan Lake once. Flush and bleed brakes.

I replaced the front pads last weekend so I hope they aren't glazed, i'll either replace the rear pads, or hit Lex up about his Hayes hydros (I know I keep saying that).

I'm sure they're fine then. In my experience some discs are sensitive to pad type. Mine work best with organic pads.

Could be the case with mine, I bought metallic only because they were out of organic and I didn't want to drive to save four dollars. I should really just take it in for a tune and once over, but I really prefer to tinker on my own stuff.

I too hate paying someone to do something I can handle. I tend to defer to an expert on my bicycles. I can replace parts, but nothing beats a professional tune. Plus you can go back and get it adjusted if it isn't prefect. (And vehicle transmissions, I always let someone else do those.)

So far the parts I've replaced were simple, but I think you may be onto something with the professional tune.

It's been years since I lived in Paker, I had good luck taking my bike to Treads location in englewood, never got to try the Parker location. For the shock service, there are some excellent videos online if you have all the tools (torque wrench, 24mm socket, snap ring pliers). You can order service kits on Amazon.

Replaced the pedals on my bike with some obnoxious yellow pedals, I'm digging it. Bike is going to need a front hub rebuild soon, and I still haven't gotten these front brakes dialed in, although I'm not sure that's possible with the hub the way it is.

Snapped a spoke on my rear wheel the other day, it wore an 11-32 rear cog, replaced it with a wheel sporting an 11-34 cog, wow what a difference. From my research online, some (mostly flatlanders) seem to prefer the 11-32, but I like the 11-34 ratio better so far (especially pulling a trailer).

Each gear should have a tooth count stamped on it, you'll be able to tell which gear was changed out for the 34. Sounds like you didn't need to add a link to the chain to accommodate the larger gear.

Didn't have to add a link, and the rear derailer was still at a reasonable angle. Was more of an experiment than anything, and it worked out.

Back from the dead!

So I'm actively shopping on Craigslist, Offer up, and FB Market place. I've pretty much set my price range around $500-$600 and for that reason looking at bikes a few years old.

The three options I'm set on currently are:
2015 Specialized Crave 29er $600
2015 Diamondback Mason 29er $500 (haven't negotiated with seller yet).
2009 Kona Hei Hei 2-9 Deluxe $400

My main question is on the Kona, is a 2009 still relevant in 2020, I'm not a hard-core cyclist and this would be my first FS, it's also the cheapest, yet it was a $3500 bike new. What would you do?

Ha. My bike is way old. Think I bought it in 1995. It's a Mongoose Hilltopper that I did a lot of upgrades on back in the day. I put som rockshox forks on it but it's still a hardtail. For me, rear suspension isn't needed because I spend very little time on the seat and I'm happy to let my legs absorb the bumps. Front suspension is a must because I usually have both hands on the bars. Did some trail riding with it but it was mostly used for "urban assaults".

hurley842002
04-05-2020, 11:42
I really don't think I need FS at this time, and I think I'm leaning towards one of the newer hardtails above, but with the Fox suspension on the Kona, it seems well spec'd for the price albeit the older bike.

I'd go with one of the hardtails. Older FS bikes often didn't have the best geometry or parts. The DB has decent components, can't tell on the Specialized but likely good. Try to demo them. Lock out on front shock is a nice feature. Consider adding a dropper seat post to whatever you get.

Seems the main difference is going to be 1x10 SRAM X7 on the DB vs 2x10 SRAM X5 front and Shimano Deore rear on the specialized, and of course front fork. I dont care for how the DB is sitting on the ground with fork in rocks, but that's just me being anal.

So I went against my policy of not buying new bikes, but I was directed to a really good local shop, and figured with small businesses being in a pinch right now, I'd make an exception.

Ended up with a 2020 Giant Talon 2 29er, which is enough bike for my current level of experience. It's already tubeless capable, so I'll likely go tubeless at some point, and go a bit wider on the tires, as well as adding a dropper seat post. Other than that, I'll likely upgrade drive train and suspension as it wears out.

On a side note, I was made aware of an awesome mountain bike park called Fantasy Island, that is 1.5 miles from my house, I'm really excited to check that out, but I've also got thousands of acres of state trust land right behind my house to explore, so yeah.

As for your previous post, yeah the 2009 bike is still relevant as long as it was a good bike with good components in 2009, Kona makes a good bike, I still ride my 2003 Gary Fisher Sugar 3. Still a great bike, original full suspension, disc brakes and tubeless tires. Pretty much the same thing you would be looking at today.
