View Full Version : A more accurate bullet for my 5.56 blaster ammo?

I have a precision load for 5.56 using 77SMK's. It's about a 1/4 MOA load.

I also load Hornady bulk 55g bullets with cannelure on my progressive press. I use Varget for both. The 55's aren't all that accurate, maybe 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 MOA. I'm out of the Hornady bullets and considering a change if I can improve the performance.

I'm open to a powder change as well, though I'd prefer to stick with Varget just for simplicity. It doesn't meter well in the Dillon powder measure, so on second thought a ball powder might make sense.

So, are there other bullets in sorta the same price range as the Hornady's that could get me down into the 1moa region?

One of my favorite, accurate plinking rounds uses a 60gr Hornady V-max. It's a flat base bullet so not what you want for long distance stuff but it's relatively cheap and holds well under 1MOA in just about every 5.56 I have run it through. Can't recall the exact load off the top of my head but I use Varget or 4895. It shot under 1/2 MOA consistently in my old bolt rifle. At least at 100 yards.

You might try some of these...I have had great results with them.

Not sure on the bullets, but I've had real good luck with H335 in my 55 fmj loads, seem to be right about 1 moa on average, depending on the brass and the amount to which I'm willing to prep, sort, and deal with it in general for the uses of blaster ammo.

I will say that I've also had good results from the V-maxes.

50gr Z-max 500rd bulk box is the cheapest "target grade" .224 bullet you can get.

You won't know if your rifle likes it till you try it and they will run with varget, maybe not the best powder for max velocity but good for accuracy.

Added benefit of the varmint bullet effect on soft targets.

I was shopping these as well but had found a z-max 500 pack for about the same price shipped.

I am a big fan of Nosler Custom Competition. The prices are good if you can find em in bulk.

Good point

$17/100 when bought in 1k bulk packs isn't too bad. I might actually have to get my paws on a 100 piece box for testing purposes, if GTG then go big on my next run for blaster ammo. Although I already have enough to keep me well entertained for quite some time.

I have had good luck with 75gr BTHP Hornady. Also the Wideners 75gr (MB2275HP) bulk have been good.

I'd reexamine the Hornady 55gr FMJBT. The guys I shoot with consistently load sub-MOA with WCC844, and I can do so with XBR8208. Wolf Primers and mixed brass, coming out of Daniel Defense CHF lightweight barrels.
