View Full Version : Kind of disheartening...
So the past few weeks have really tested me at work, besides getting word about a month ago that cadets graduating from our academy can now apply directly for patrol (whereas before everyone had to start in the jail division and then apply and compete for a slot to get on patrol), I got moved from day shift to night shift this week. After doing a full 3 month rotation on nights, our shift switched to days and after just 3 weeks the night shift has some guys retire and myself and one other get moved and we're back on nights until July. Sucks, but it's not too terrible, a lot of the people on this shift are pretty cool folks. But what really has me irked is that I recently put in for a position with the Court Security Unit, something that I had wanted to do since getting hired on. Well it seems everyone who put in got the email the other day to attend oral boards this week, except me. I was wondering if they didn't select me. Nope, got the email when I got to work today (er tonight) that I am on the list to go to the oral board for the Civil unit next week. Just one problem. The requirement for Civil is that applicants have to have been a deputy for 2 years. So now, because HR screwed up, I can't get on Courts this time around (I assume I'll get a better luck next time email after I emailed HR about the mix up) AND something slipped through the cracks and they put me down for a division I'm not yet eligible for. Kinda crummy set of circumstances... Just needed to vent. I really hope this isn't a commonplace thing for HR... [shit-happens]

That's rough man, I know that a couple of guys I work with recently got their shifts switched on them. That always is difficult because most guys try to pick their shifts to accomodate to their family schedule and that makes things even harder for them. Hopefully something will work out for you. Good luck man.
On the bright side you aren't a cop in ferguson or Baltimore.....so you have that going for you
It can be frustrating, but in a seniority based system, all you can really do is bide your time, and treat the changes as opportunities.

Don't complain about a job when you're brand new, it just sets you up for a poisonous negative attitude long before it is warranted. A negative attitude can kill a career.

Completely agree. You should go into a new job with a positive attitude, but knowing good and well, that you will be shafted (at a minimum) the first year, usually longer in the seniority based field of Law enforcement. Expecting anything else is just an entitled attitude.

Great advice right here. I wish they tough this stuff in school.
Or think about how you could still be working for dad with the chick that you hated her music so much. What's better?

Exactly what I thought when I opened this. Oh great and so begin the daily threads of Ronin complaining about work again.
You're the new guy, you can't expect the best shifts, duties, equipment, ect. Unless you're one of the entitled generation and expect everything handed to you. I recently had someone like that apply for a job I posted. He applied for an entry level position, he had 0 experience and said he'd accept the job for more than I as a manager with 20+ years experience make. Yea good luck with that.

^^But...but I'm entitled to it![facepalm]
Call the whaambulance, Code 10![panic]
You have any idea how long I had to stand in the middle of a highway with either a shovel, jackhammer or asphalt lute in my hands before I was able to get into a decent slot?
7 years.
Life ain't BurgerKing.
You can't have it your way all the time.
And 87 gazillion "likes" to what Stu said. That kind of outlook is career suicide.
You think this is the only adversity your going to encounter in your career?
Wait until you go up for promotion against a black, gay female.

If you find yourself assigned to the jail 2-3 years from now and you keep getting passed up for promotions to the road you might consider that supervisors consider you THAT GUY. At that point you might want to think long and hard about changing agencies or you may end up retiring in the jail.

Are you able to watch the sunrise each morning? Does your heart beat without assistance? Can you take a deep breath without pain? Do your legs and arms and hands work without pain? Can you hear the birds' songs? Got an income?
If so, then quit yer complaining and count your blessings...
Ronin, I'm not trying to get down on you, or start a dog pile (pig pile?). So please only take it as constructive advise. Be positive, and stay positive. The negative attitude is extremely difficult to shake and people will see it in you long before you will.
Well, there came some good news today... HR manager called, she looked into it and admitted she made a mistake and I've been scheduled for an oral board tomorrow! I didn't really intend for this to come off as a complaining or whining thread, just a "ugh, regular work related stress." I do count my blessings that I'm in the career I want and love. On a lighter note, you think you know crazy, you haven't met a female who claimed she was pregnant and needed to get the computer out of her womb... She claimed the father was "one of those machines." ROFL

Did she have names picked out, like "Dell boy" or "Apple girl"? Or perhaps "Cray"? [Coffee]

Exactly what kind of "Oral Board" is it you'll be facing?

Congrats... good luck.
No matter the outcome, make sure you do something nice for the HR manager to thank her for fixing things. It would have been easier for her to just ignore the mistake and go on with her job. Always nice to have someone who likes you in HR.

I recently had a guy on a hospital watch who was convinced that the doctors were trying to put his IV in so that they could hook him up to a child because the child was going to take his "life force" from him. He also spoke with his imaginary sister the whole time.

oh yaa! Let me +1 the above. Be sweet to HR, always, because the second you tick off the nice lady who has worked in there for 15 years who knows everyone that is anyone then you are screwed beyond belief. How do I know these things? Because I was young once and routinely stuck my size 12 shoe in my mouth and walked around with it hanging out. Sucks to learn life lessons that way, but you never forget them either.

One of the guys I work with (he just came back from patrol, hasn't been in the jail in 7 years) said "I almost forgot how interesting medical can get, there's crazy, then there's 'did that just come out of their mouth crazy.'

Oh for sure! Our HR manager has been here for almost 20. You don't stick around that long unless you know how to kick ass at your job... Especially working for a Sheriff's office.

Usually the court side security is handled by the outgoing retiring or limited duty types. I'd be surprised that anyone without a few years experience gets it.
Crazy folks? See it every day. Had a guy last week fighting with another guy who wouldn't let him through the doorway to the building. It was his own reflection in the glass on a window. The entrance was about 30 feet to the right.

Another blessing: you got into a good agency in a relatively short time, and you have options. Good luck bro.
