View Full Version : interest in setting up a spot in pawnee?

i have been kicking around the idea of setting up a spot at pawnee where some of us know we can go and shoot. possibly using some large rocks to mark ranges in 100 yard increments out to 1000. maybe even setting up a decent spot to camp. anyone know of some good places to start or have any interest in setting it up sometime this spring/summer with me?

if anyone else has driven all over the place out there trying to differentiate public vs private you'll know how annoying it is to not have a set place to go. i know they have a range out there now but i want to be able to shoot long distances at steel and would really like a place to camp so it can be a multi day outing.

I would assist because I want to learn long range. See If dmeitz will share info on his spot.

Some suggestions from the last time we did this:

1. Do not use your vehicle to place the targets, and park no more than 10 feet from the road. Or make a $240 contribution to Fish & Wildlife for 'off-roading'.
2. When it comes time to retrieve your targets, have a working pair of cell phones or walkie-talkies. This is so that the up-range guy can stop the guys who didn't look over the low hill 'berm' they choose when setting up perpendicular to your targets from launching rounds at your friends going down-range to retrieve the targets.

You left out

#3. When retrieving targets and you need to have those waiting by the truck infom other shooters what they're doing. Make sure that person or persons have the keys and not in someone's pocket ,out 1K yards.

yeah my hope is if we can all find a good, safe spot we can mark the ranges with fairly large rocks with a bit of paint or something on them, then when we go back simply set up targets at desired range. i swear when i go to pawnee half the time i spend driving around trying to figure out whats public and whats safe. if anyone decides to do it just let me know and we will get it going. I've got some steel targets and a good range finder to get us started.

I would be interested in helping out. I make a weekend trip ever other month or so depending on weather. There are a few spots I frequent, but as a general rule the spots seem to get better the further you are willing to drive.

Edit: redacted my question, as its answered in the op.

I have a 25' water cooled CNC plasma table and get steel at commercial cost. If some guys want to pitch for material, I can make whatever targets we want. I'm pretty sure I have enough scrap angle iron for target stands too.

I'm definitely interested and am willing to throw down on some targets.

Loose lips sinks ships! Before you know it there will be ex-nfl player bums up there using the spot as a public restroom!

i feel like if its between board members its not as bad, assuming people don't branch out to other random people. heck, i would even be willing to set some stuff up myself but i just never know a truly good place to go out there. its difficult to tell public from private, even with a map.

This is a good reminder to buy some shiny "Private Property" signs.

i have some stands, but i would be interested in a fairly large gong or some sort.

if you want, pm me details about locations and likely distances it is safe to shoot out to and maybe we could set up a day to head out and scope the site.

I was out south of 104 with the kids today when someone drove down a no vehicle road and set up in our firing line. We had to move farther south shooting east. did see a couple of permanent looking gong setups to my east. Has this gone anywhere? I'd love to learn to shoot distance.

When this gets put together, I'll donate a couple of our targets to the cause.

Did this ever get off the ground? I'm assuming not since the thread fizzled. Anyone still interested? I've got an 18"x36"x1/2" Ar500 silhouette that I can bring.

Agree with op, the times I've been I waste so much time driving around then the rest of the time looking over my shoulder waiting for a land owner or ranger to show up. I've had maps and I still have a hard time figuring it out.

The area I had in mind upon further review is a mixture of both State and Federal Land. Although people setup and shoot 300-1200yds on a regular basis it does not appear to be legal.

I have a few locations that work to 600yd. However, the 1000yd range with partial road access to set targets remains a unicorn.

If you don't mind walking to set your targets and want to shoot 1000yds, you can setup off 96 facing north in a few locations west of the Baker Designated Area.

Edit: Make sure to check the latest shooting closures before heading out. The area south of 96 in the area of 57 and 61 was recently closed.

OK here's a deal suggestion. Join the Pawnee shooting sports club. Divide the membership by 3-4 shooters. That's approx $40 per wit a 4 limit per. I know someone who did it and everyone's happy, when they can get time to shoot.

It's steel out to 1K. Targets are set up, nice shooting berm, but uncovered. All you need to do is get set up and shoot.

I'm a member there. If someone would like to check it out before committing, lmk. YES. it's a drive from the metro area. However some of you were willing to hit pawnee anyway. Why not shoot in a controlled environment.
Not someplace the rangers will chase you from
OR....as 1 or 2 other members can confirm. Have rounds hitting near you as you retrieve those 700- 1K plates. See post #3 ;)

HOWEVER i am on a real tight schedule this month, up till end of May. If not, they have open to public shooting friday afternoon, sat-sunday.

I too am interested in this. Anybody go to the spot with the concrete well, you can see a windmill? Not sure what the deal is with this spot but theres always tons of brass I pick up/clean up when I go. Somebody drove by as I was cleaning up and they waved with a smile so I assume they live near by possibly. Lots of range out there but BRUTAL grasshoppers or whatever in the summer. Also have to check the wind before heading out if you want to shoot rimfires at any kind of long range.
I sometimes will go to bakers draw to zero and then head out to find more rand. Eventually I would love to be able to get out to a mile if possible (once I get a bigger caliber)
If anybody wants to head out one of these up coming weekends I will be going out to rezero some rimfires and shoot some off my steel at a couple hundred yards. One time was connecting consistently at 400 with a .17 HMR.
I'm in Longmont looking to head out this weekend or next.

My biggest gripe with Pawnee Sportsmans Center is no back-stops at each target. When you hit you are golden, but if you miss, its almost impossible to tell where your round went. Somewhere into the grass a long ways down range.

Unless they improved it since my last visit?

No they have not. You're correct, looking for misses are almost impossible. For that matter so it anywhere on the grasslands. The up side is one avoids a possible Off Road Fine of $275. Surely, you've heard about those ;)

I have only been to their 200 (or 250 y range) but want to check out the 1,000. They have steel every 100 correct?
I liked the place alot the one time I went. Funny thing is Sportsmens club is 1.5 hours away and CRC is exactly 1.5 hours away. Think I'm gonna join CRC and just pay the public fee at Pawnee.

Such a long drive for me. I am going to start searching out a spot in Pike national forest. Last year I had a couple spots in Pawnee that I could shoot a couple dozen prairie dogs but those places are ghost towns as of today. What a shame

I've searched the mountains for a few years and can't find anythibg. Either not very long eange, too many trails, camping spots, too far away, etc.
It's frustrating to say the least.
