View Full Version : Anybody denied CBI for no known reason?

Was going to pick up a rifle at Walmart today and at first, my CBI went in to a "Delayed" state and then went to "Denied. I honestly check "no" on all the boxes on the
form and am perfectly legal to own and carry. Anybody have this experience and can tell me what the next steps are?
Thanks.
Haven't had it happen to me, but yes it happens. Do you have a common name? Did you put your social down?
I'm pretty sure they give a reason for denial. What did the "dealer" say was the reason?
I got denied once. Apparently my drivers license had expired and was "not a valid form of identification." I renewed it and went back and went through without a problem.

I did put my my social down. No reason given by the paperwork they gave me.

If you checked "no" on 11a, "Are you the actual transferee/buyer of the firearm(s). That is probably the reason you were denied.

That was my first though.

Well, there's your problem, the first question is supposed to be checked "Yes".

I think you may have misunderstood what I meant to say. I was being a bit facetious but meaning that I answer all the questions the way they are supposed to be answered....and do so honestly.

It could have been a typo on the part of the person entering your information, you can try another BGC at another FFL, or write down the store, date and approximate time of your background check and contact the CBI on Monday is about your only other recourse.

Thanks Bob. That's the current plan.
Hope you get it sorted out. Sucks to be "denied" if you are perfectly legal to own.

Thanks. It sure does suck. I was pretty surprised. Probably just a typo of some sort. I'm sure the fine and courteous folks at CBI will get it all sorted out chop chop.
But forever your denial will be a statistic used by politicians to prove that background checks prevent criminals from getting guns. Even when you get the denial overturned, which is like retracting a page one story on page fifteen a week and a half later, the denial will be used to support the efficacy of the background check law.
I hope you get it sorted out. CBI is the place to address the error.

They won't tell you the reason. The dealer will be given a denial number. Appeal the decision with CBI and they'll tell you why but you usually have to do it in writing.
Got a ticket in the fairly recent past that you haven't paid?

Nope, not a ticket or accident anywhere on my record. I'm such a good boy, it's almost sick. Haven't committed any felonies in almost a month.

You haven't gone to your doctor recently and said that you have been feeling down or depressed ?
Or have a VA PTSD diagnosis ?

You know Bob, I thought of that. I am in the VA "healthcare" system but no PTSD diagnosis.
I've heard something about vets and antidepressants but I've also heard a bunch of other conspiracy theories too.

Mine always take a long time to clear, expected since I did find my way to jail when I was 20.

I have seen it before. In your case it may be the VA. As one member here had to "clear his name" when he and his wife were denied. The Reason? The police showed up to his house once on a domestic. None were charged/arrested because they had the wrong place but because a call went in on his address and a report was taken with his name on it .......
Sorry OP--keep us updated.
I heard a story on a background check being denied. This guys job took him out of the country for months at a time, he would pawn his handgun (for safekeeping) to the same shop and get it back when he was stateside. He had done this many times but was denied after his girlfriend 'forgot' to pay a traffic ticket she had gotten while he was away. No reason was given to him or the pawnshop, he ended up getting it back after appealing and paying the ticket.

Interesting, I can't see how a wife's traffic ticket could get you denied, let alone a girlfriend.

If she was driving a vehicle registered in his name, and it was a parking ticket in Denver. Well then, there you go.

Hadn't even thought about that. I guess the ridiculousness of being denied a firearm purchase due to a traffic ticket, doesn't really have me thinking. Glad I paid that Denver photo van ticket awhile back.
It's for the children. If you can't obey the laws while operating a motor vehicle, how can the children be kept safe while you possess a firearm? [Sarcasm2]

It's comical to me that we have such a strong nanny state (for the children) yet no one has to meet any qualifications to have children.
Maybe there should be a 4473 parents have to fill out before having their newborns transferred to them from the nursery? But I can see the controversy already because procreation is a natural right unlike gun ownership which is a right granted by government and only protected by the Bill of Rights to the extent allowed by the courts.

Unless you are in China, the government there limits the number of children you are allowed to have.......
Hey, wait, maybe our government could do this too. This would limit the number of welfare babies and relieve the increasing burden on us tax paying citizens.

Uh....No thanks.
The best government is less government.
When you get a denial you will be (supposed to be) given a nice slip of paper with a transaction ID on it and a phone number to call. You call the number, talk to the "nice" people, and they send you a letter explaining your denial. You resolve whatever it is, go back to the same dealer, they run you again - and poof your a llama.

Does anyone doubt this isn't in our future?
My brother in law was given a 'delayed' status yesterday at Cabelas. They said it could take up to 5 days. He has no idea what it could be, but he always gets harrassed at airport security. Hmmm!

I thought about this the last time I bought off the boards here. like how horrifying would it be to be standing there with somebody from the boards, and be denied for no reason lol...
luckily it hasn't happened to me lol

One of my employees was denied with me standing there with him.
Turns out 25 years ago he had gotten in an altercation with his wifes ex and the police were called. The ex was issued a ticket and jailed, nothing happened to my employee. They still denied him and he had to go through the Broomfield courts to get it cleared.
So did the OP ever figure out what the issue was?
Way back when I attempted to purchase a pistol from Paladin Arms...started with a 3 day delay...then was extended to a 5 day delay...then about a week out they denied it. There was no phone in at that point...I had to fill out paperwork and mail it in. Paperwork stated that if you didn't dispute the denial you would be forever barred from firearm ownership. It also stated that you would be informed as to why you had been denied. In the end they approved the sale but never stated why I had been denied to begin with.

^^^Paldin Arms, there is a trip down memory lane!
I used to get delayed all the time and could never figure out why. I have never had worse than a traffic ticket.
A coworkers husband was in CBI at the time and was able to find out why, some fuckwit with the same name as I had written a ton of hot checks in Aurora and had warrants out on him.
I started putting my SSN on the 4473 and no more delays.
