View Full Version : 1 piece hand guard on an AR15

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the AR world, just picked up my SW MP15 a few days ago!
And I'm having a problem installing a 1 piece quad rail on it.. every video I've seen shows a 2 piece and how it just screws together.. but with this Omega Manufacturing 1 piece I've ordered, I figure some disassembly is required..
Anyone in the Springs area that could give me a hand on this? Or recommendations on a local gunsmith?

Can you post pictures or a link to what you are talking about ?
You'll need tools or someone who has the tools to help.
Another option might be to order a different handguard. You'll want a "two piece, drop in" type handguard if you don't want to remove the front sight base and the factory barrel nut.

That is what I am thinking when he said "one piece" hand guard, that is meaning a Free Float hand guard.

As Ray said, unless you have all the special tools and vise blocks, take it to a trusted gun smith to have it put on.
Probably more than you want to spend, but I've been happy with this one for a drop in unit.

That does look neat Ray but what's the difference between that and this..

Note this is 7075 T6 aluminum

Other than the obvious $100 price? Lol.
I don't mean this to come across as me being some sort of snob or something.
I posted the one above because I have personal experience with it. The two I had dropped right in and locked up super tight. It's from a reputable company and is made in the U.S.
I have never heard of the one you referenced or heard of the company that makes it. My guess is it is probably made in China. Maybe it will drop right in. I'd be surprised if it locked up tight. Although, I might be wrong.
Can I ask what you are looking to accomplish? I doubt you'll see a huge accuracy increase on your particular rifle just by free floating it. Are you just looking for a way to attach accessories?

I have a solution to your problem.
[pick-me]
Or buy a quality quad rail.
Ray is right on the money, BC is good stuff for the money.
One thing to keep in mind, you get what you pay for.
I can guarantee you that the rail from eBay is soft, probably not to true
picatinny specs and the anodizing probably is not much better than rattle can black or magic marker.
Probably much heavier too.
Spend your hard earned cash on the very best you can afford.
That way you are never disappointed.

In case the OP doesn't get it, Bert at BP Tactical is the go to Gun Smith for a lot of members of this forum.
"If you want your gun fixed or polished, go see Bert, if you want to save a buck, go see Bert" If you want your rifle to shoot straight and put dinner on your plate, Go see Bert, go see Bert, go see Bert....

I completely agree with both of you in terms of getting what you pay for.
Omega Manufacturing was recommended on another forum and all of their parts are coming out of Utah. Sounds pretty Merican to me. The one I have now that I'm exchanging for their modular 2 piece drop in is pretty tough and looks great in terms of quality.
I just got into the world of ARs but I'm in the middle of a 63 c-10 frame off so I know quality. And I only buy American made ;)

I'm looking to have fun plinking a few hundred yards away so I've read free floating is the way to go.. that's why I initially chose this style.

Nothing wrong with that. I am just willing to bet you will probably be pretty happy with the way it shoots without free floating it.
But what do I know... I've only been shooting the platform for a little over 20 years. [Coffee]
Anyhow, hope it works out well for you. Make sure to post a picture up when you get it swapped out. [Awesom]

Here's a picture of current rail.. I contacted Omega and they said they would be happy to exchange it for the 2 piece for only a $5 difference but I might just take Colorado_Hack up on his offer and learn something about my rifle as well!

Bushmaster 30rd aluminum magazines pretty good?
They are pretty legal if you owned it last year prior to July 1st.
Some things should just be left unsaid in public. [panic]
Take it to Tim.
It's a quick job to knock off the existing barrel nut and put that thing on when you have the right tools and setup. The price of admission if you get to watch is worth every penny.
P.S. I've used both guys for different work and reasons, and you cannot go wrong with either, but the drive to Tim's for this kind of work is IMHO the best option for you.

Victors, sending you a PM.. I'm close, and will be in Colorado Springs tomorrow for work... let me know if you'd like a quick eyeball on what you're dealing with, or if you've already got it handled...
I can bring my AR wrench (from Guntech), torque wrench, and my upper vise block... I even have some shims if there are alignment issues with the nut... you'd just have to have a vise.
I'm not a FFL like Bert or Tim- but I have the tools required... you'd do the wrenching, but I'll let you know what to do.
your choice- I won't be be upset if you'd rather use a licensed FFL- but thought I'd offer since I like to wrench my own stuff
Look for my PM in your inbox... I'm finishing up some paperwork on some work I'm doing tonight and will send it.

If you are trying to save money and attach accessories I would recommend a magpul hand guard no special tools required for installation you can get rail sections to attach accessories or magpul products that mount directly to the handguard

Nice, I've got a '61 cc c-10 in the garage tore apart in the middle of a 6.0ls swap. Sounds like there is a few of them on here.
