View Full Version : HELP! The screw that came with my Magpul AK grip doesn't fit.
Before I go asking one of the folks over at Home Depot I'd like to run it by you guys. So I bought a new grip for my WASR10, but the screw that came with the Magpul grip doesn't fit in the Tapco grip bushing. I'm guessing it's a difference between US and Metric? The screw goes in about 4 rotations, then stops as if too big. Any idea on the side needed?
I'm guessing it has that thick thread lock stuff on it? You might try cleaning that off with a wire brush and try it again.

If the threads didn't match it most likely would not go in 4 turns before stopping. There is probably something obstructing the threads. Maybe a bur or a bad spot left from machining. If you can shine a light in there and take a look, that may reveal the culprit.

Is it possible to use the old screw from old grip?

Maybe. If he stacks about two inches of washers on it. [Coffee]
You can take the old screw to Depot to find out the thread type/size you need and but the approprite size/length you need.
Original is M6 X 100mm - 1.00 MM Pitch
the Magpul one will be shorter.

The only thing he needs to do is remove the screw block from the rifle, hold it with one hand, install screw with the other. This allows one to see what and where the issues is. THEN he'll know if it's the hardware or block.
I'd go to your local hardware store (ACE) as they have thread blocks set up in the nut & bolt aisle. This way you can see exactly what you need before someone at HD or Lowes says. This looks like it "might work.
Does the OP have a thread pitch gauge on hand, tap's & die's? If not he as others who "tinker" with anything mechanical should consider investing in.
Without thread pitch gauges, you can just lay the two bolts against each other to check the thread pitch. If they are the same pitch the threads will nest nicely inside each other. Not sure if that made sense the way I explained it. Maybe I'll post a picture.
Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. When you compare the two bolts this way the high spots on the threads should nest nicely inside the low spots in threads of the other bolt. If they do, the thread pitch is the same. If not, they're different.

+1 on going to Ace over Depot or Lowes when dealing with hardware.

They even cut keys ;)
And this boys and girls is how new bolts are made. [Flower]

This is false.
Metric vs SAE threads: as long as diameter and pitch are similar between the two frequently you can get a "false start". An example is 1/2 x 28 and 12 x 1.5. They look very similar from outward appearances.
But when you try to mate them the threads are "out of time" with each other. Get 3-4 turns and the timing difference stacks up and the thread stalls out.
Rays method of checking threads is the way to go without a pitch gage as long as you know what your "gage" thread is.
Silly cstone, don't you know those are both male threads?
You've been in Colorado too long[gayafro][fagpole]
Yeah, my method is just a quick and dirty way if you have an existing bolt you know fits and want to make sure the replacement bolt is the right pitch. I'm pretty good at distinguishing a 13 tpi bolt from a 28 tpi just by looking. Lol. Sometimes the 7 and 8 look pretty similar without lining them up. Same with the 11 and the 13.
Hell, as a transmission guy I knew once said, "A cross thread is better 'n a lock washer"...[Sarcasm2]

Yep. I've never seen a cross threaded bolt back off. [Awesom]

Try running the screw in from the backside. Sometimes if you have a booger on the female threads you can "chase" them enough to clear them out.
Use a bit of oil or grease on the threads.
Hell, even my trophy wife laughed at that!

I noticed they had it, thought it would clear itself out as I started the screw in, but then had to clear that gunk off. Luckily I can remove the bushing from the rifle (anyone with an AK knows what I'm talking about) and bring everything in on Thurs to ACE (didn't know there was a difference between them- I'm not very handy). Thanks for the help.

And so goes another day on "Saving Ronins Privates".....

Hahaha, Bert! Haven't heard that one before!
Got it hooked up and even ordered and installed an E93 V3 single point sling attach.

Trying my best to keep it as original looking as possible, but man, I hated the original sling. Besides, I don't want Papa Kalashnikov chastising me for changing perfect rifle with silly mods.

Tune in next week to "Saving Ronins Privates" when Ronin loses his juice box privileges for pointing his PopTart at the Sarg and saying "Pew,Pew,Pew".

So what was the issue??? Did you just get a new screw or where you able to use the one that came with it???

I needed a new one that actually fit into the bushing... It turned out to be an M6 which I just picked up from Ace Hardware (granted, the one in N. Aurora that was in an awful shady location). It's all good now. I originally posted this to just find out if someone knew what size screw goes into a Tapco bushing so I didn't have to play mix and match at the store. Turned out that Home Depot had a display with the different sizes on it, then when I found the size that fit they didn't have anything in that size.

HA! Welcome to my world. The Depot has everything but the one thing you TRULY need that day.

Home Depot is only good if you want some cheap, warped lumber.

Or water damaged sheet rock at a premium price.

So I take it you guys don't like Home Depot? [Sarcasm2]
You need to put one of the Magpul Zhukov handguards on that AK so I can see what you think about it.
