View Full Version : Alabama congressman proposes CMP take control of old Army 1911A1s
There has been lots of chatter about this in the past, but I think this is the first time I've ever seen an actual legit proposal.
I won't hold my breath - it would have Congress and the President to make it past, and the CMP's charter would have to be updated, as I believe it currently will not support/allow handgun sales.
Anyway, it is an interesting dream. Maybe Hillary will let us have the South Korean Garands (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/09/01/obama-administration-reverses-course-forbids-sale-antique-m-rifles/) back if she takes office, too. LOL.

That'd be cool
Anyone here a member of CMP? Local Chapter?

It would be cool, but yeah, not holding my breath.
Awesome news!!! Anyone else hoping they don't re-arsenal them and preserve collector value? I'd rather have a collector than a shooter (new GIs are cheap).
Odds are they are mix-masters and re-arsenals anyway... But I'd love to see what they can get!
Anyone here a member of CMP? Local Chapter?
There are local chapters of the CMP? I have been a customer of CMP for a long time, but didn't know they had any actual chapters/local groups.
Did you mean maybe the GCA / Garand Collector's Association? I don't know much about it, but a few others had mentioned it and I thought about signing up at one point.

No such thing as a local chapter but there are affiliated clubs. Active duty and retired members of any of the armed forces qualify with a photocopy of their ID card. CSSA members count (although I never got a membership card or materials for the 5 years I was a member). Registered members of the Pikes Peak Council of BSA can qualify. Lots of other clubs qualify.
I think this would be a great way for a group to start a pistol marksmanship program, similar to how the Appleseed Project teaches rifle marksmanship.
I believe BLGC Members qualify through the club.
Anyone else remember what happened to the 1911's, M-14's and the Department of Civilian Marksmanship under Bill Clinton's rule?
FWIW, I didn't know this until today but there are at least three different types of relationships with CMP.
1) Normal club affiliations (Ranges, clubs, schools, BSA/JROTC, etc)
http://thecmp.org/clubs/
https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=clubSearch
2) "Special Affiliates" like veterans orgs, military services, law enforcement orgs and groups
3) A 1-per-state association. That is CSSA (http://www.cssa.org) in Colorado. As far as I can tell, the major difference is an "official" tighter relationship, and that CMP provides one cheap $200 Garand every year to be auctioned off for raising funds.

Here's the first 50 off the current list of affiliates for those who may still be looking for something to qualify for a purchase. I was too lazy to figure out how to pull the next 50, but you can go to the link above and search for something nearby pretty easily.

The only thing I see as a impediment to my acquiring a M1911A1 will be the prices, I am sure that with just shy of a 100,000 pieces, the asking prices will be in the realm of the collectors and auction prices will be astronomical. But, they have to be self supporting so sell them for what the market will bear.
Orest retired last year... I remember a thread a while back where someone said they had talked directly to him and he was supportive but acknowledged it was an uphill battle.
But now, who knows...?
