View Full Version : What should I do with 2 feral kittens

Sparky

Found 3 little cuties in my backyard and 1 escaped. Probably should have left them alone but they are cute and I don't want a fox to eat them. One is Siamese colored but longer hair. Seems as they are ok with dry food.

Is there any sign of the mother? How old are they? How big? Don't give them dry food. You need canned kitten food, and maybe even milk safe for kittens. It's expensive and takes a lot of time to raise babies; you may want to bring them to a no kill shelter. Dry food will not help them.

I believe they are around 8+ weeks old

Post free kittens on CL? Otherwise, I'd take them to a shelter.

No kill shelter so they get spayed, or neutered.

TheGrey
05-06-2015, 16:42
I'd bring them to a no-kill shelter if they were that old. There's no telling if they've been socialized, or if the mother has shown them everything kittens need to know. Otherwise, do you have tie and money to care for and raise two feral kittens?

At 8 weeks dry kitten food will work. All. Of the cats I have had over the years started out their lives as feral kittens, they are also the best mousers. I agree about the spaying or neutering, but don't do that until they are 6 months old or so. They will not develop correctly without the harmones in their adolescent growth period. There are long haired Siamese cats, I had one that was again a feral kitten. If you can care for them, keep them. If not then a shelter, or find a friend with kids and let the kids come overand play with them. They will be gone quick enough. [LOL]

I have more cats then I want now so I will not be keeping these. They are cute as hell though.

You fed 'em, you got 'em! My wife caught a feral kitten and we still have it. Good with the other cats but otherwise is useless, can't pet it or anything. It just avoids the humans in the house.
If you find any feral animal, just leave it be and nature will take its course.

We have a feral barn cat. Rescued off the road as a kitten, he was hit by a car. Sleeps in the house at night. He can be petted, if you ask him first. Just be careful, he brings critters in the house. He hides from strangers.

Best coyote bait there is.
Put them in a cat carrier and suspend it from a tree limb.
Once they start fussing, the coyotes come running. Never in any real danger.

Or, I could use another mouser at our place in the mountains.

Our barn cats only eat food that's dry on the outside and wet in the middle.

Our cat was a feral kitten from the animal shelter here......apparently they get lots of feral cats in Leadville. He was a little sketchy when we got him (when he got scared you could see the wild in his eyes lol) but he's cool now and plays with the dogs and acts like the kids baby. A lot of the strays end up as barn/shop cats from what I gleaned but they're still domestic animals, and with time and patience most can be civilized I think. Anyways I'd say give them to someone who wants to work with them or use them as a mouser, or take them to a shelter (if you don't want to keep them) - there isn't any reason to kill them (unless they're packing the rabiez lol)

Flush 'em down the toilet.

That's just cruel.

Line up their heads in front of your truck tire and roll forward.

...or just post up a sign to find their owners:

"Best coyote bait there is."

I'm thinking they must work pretty good for cougars as well. When we lived in Oregon our old kitty since gone was mewling as pitiful as possible wanting inside.....he had done something wrong so I was leaving him out there. After a while the dogs started freaking out so i let him in and went out to see several sets of yellow eyes watching from the dark. They moved like cats from my experience, and apparently where since the neighbor later said his game cams had seen a mother and two younger cats hanging around that side of the property.

Sorry Neal, I need no further competition for my grub!

DO NOT GIVE THEM AWAY ON CL!!!

There are some sick fucks out there that will kill a cat just to kill it. Quite a few instances of CL giveaways meeting a horrific end.
Cat care society or a no kill shelter please.

Oh and I can't believe it took four pages to get to the dreaded Cat Juggling......the horror!

I figured as much...although if you didn't have that part in your signature, I'd say you were in some fierce competition for that title with some others in this thread.

There are some people in this thread that I hope are kidding...but I'm disturbed enough that I think I'm going to no longer going to follow it. I don't know everyone here, and there are too few indicators of joking for me to tell for sure.

Sparky, I'll put out the word through my social circles that you have kittens available. And I second the suggestion to not advertise on CL; there are too many sick yahoos out there.

My neighbor is a crazy cat lady. She has cat paws on her license plates, feline rescue program stickers on her car, bags of litter everywhere, never leaves the house other than to go to work, and the water that drips from her porch after it snows is yellow.
I bet she'd take them.

05-07-2015, 21:53
Hell, I'm not even a cat person. But after that pic, I'd ALMOST take them in.
Too bad they grow up to be cats. Cute doesn't even begin to describe them.

If you put them on CL or give them to a shelter they will probably end up with a cat lady and be a nuance to society.

I would feed them to the coyotes or sneak them into the shopping mall and let them go, board shop keepers love to play with cats.

I picked up a feral kitten out of the desert in southern AZ when I was a kid. We kept her. Darn thing was mean as hell. For some reason exposed toes pissed her off and she would attack our bare feet regularly. Hands dangling over the side of the couch too. She killed more things than I could ever count. She'd bring the mice inside, alive and put them in the bathtub so she could play with them for a while before she ate them. Woke up many a morning to find a mess in the tub. She killed lizards, birds and even a few full grown rabbits.

Not sure why we kept her. We always figured a coyote would get her one day but never did. She lived 19 years. Tough old kitty.

Sparky, if you think they're Siamese kittens (or part Siamese), contact the Rocky Mountain Siamese Rescue http://co.siameserescue.org/ They'll foster them and find them homes. Otherwise I think you've already received good advice from the non-sociopath contributors in this thread.

I've got four cats and am in Texas otherwise I would for sure take one from you. The shelters here (at least the ones I've been to) have barn cat programs for cats and kittens who aren't suitable to be adopted as pets. Given that your little ones are responding well to you already, I don't think they'll need to go to a barn cat program, but it's something to think about.

Thanks for looking out for the little ones.

Feral cats don't really make as good of pets as non feral. They are better barn cats. Always exceptions of course.

Some people in this thread need to lighten up a little bit...

My black cat 'Coal' (original name eh?) is feral and great. He's kind of calmed down now, when we first got him he'd beat the crap out of our German Shepherd and attack my son for no reason. Granted you still don't want to antagonize him otherwise all bets are off:)

They are now family members.
