View Full Version : What was the first gun you bought yourself as an adult?
Ruger P91DC for me. The year was probably 1994. I shot the crap out of that gun. It was heavy and bulky, but 100% reliable for the 5K or so rounds I put through it.
Note if you still have it or not. I regret selling mine.

Glock 22. I realized very quickly I didn't like .40 or glocks for that matter. I've owned a few 19's and 26's over the years but still didn't enjoy them. I'll probably buy a gen4 19 though, that actually feels good in my hand.
Mossberg 17 hmr from big 5. My buddy has it now. Don't regret selling it

Marlin 336 30-30, I've told the story before, but a few years after purchasing it, I needed money to travel for a railroad interview, so I sold it to my father. He held onto it and gave it to me as a Christmas gift a few years ago. I'll never part with that rifle again if I don't have to.

For me it was a P95DC about the same time. Maybe couple years later, 95-96.

Mine was a green XD40 in 4" (service) model. Much like Hotchef, I soon decided I didn't like the XD platform or .40.
I can't part with it, though. :)
Berretta 92FS in SS. Bought it back in the 90's. Best gun I have ever had.... Love it. Reliable, accurate and quiet as a Hoolywood movie suppressed. I will never sell it. ;). No idea of round count.
There are plenty who are down on the 92FS, this to me is a poster child of shoot what you like. I have been shooting that same gun for years, we know each other. I practice with, play with it.... It is part of me. That is what counts.
870 Express in 2003 on my 18th birthday. I still use it for goose hunting.
Used S&W Model 19, .357 Combat Magnum, 6" barrel w/orange ramp front sight and white outlined rear. Got it from an ad in the paper back home in OK in the late 70's. Paid a whopping $225 for it. Wish I still had it, but lean times come around to us all now and then.
Actually bought another one exactly like it, identical, a few years later. Same deal, ad in paper, $225. Also long gone. I'd give a nut to get them both back.

Got a Marlin 60 from a pawn shop outside Keesler when I was 18. First pistol was a Ruger P89. Thing was a tank. A relatively inaccurate tank, but would shoot everything you'd feed it.

Winchester Model 94 in .30-30 made in 1994. Still my favorite gun to own and shoot. I'll never sell it.
S&W 1911 govt size...still in the safe, won't let that one go...first rifle was a fed ordinance (Usgi parts) M1A...rides next to the 1911 still too...lol...I'm much more practical now
Beretta 92F in 1991 after an attempted break-in. All I had at the time were hunting rifles and shotguns given to me by my father over the years.
Traded it in on a Sig P229 as soon as they came out.
My Smith & Wesson M&P 40c. It's the gun I always talk about and compete with.
Smith and Wesson Sigma Series .40. I sold it a long time ago but was a decent first gun.

Steyr M40 ... with a big stack of 10 round magazines (this was in the ban era).
Before I moved to CO in 2006, the only guns I owned were gifts from my step father. I bought my first handgun shortly after moving here, an XD9sc, to be used for CCW and my nightstand. I sold it before the private party sales law changed in 2013. Within 2 weeks of buying the XD9sc, I also bought a Walther P22, which I do still own (and never shoot).

Love the gun and will keep it forever
My first purchase was a Remington XR 100 range master in 22-250 that went straight to the gunsmith to have a new barrel put on and chambered to 22-250 Ackley Improved. Still have it sitting in the safe where it has taken a back seat to newer purchases. My first pistol purchase was a 1911 Springfield operator.

P229. Only a few years ago.
Springfield XDm-40 was the first firearm I purchased as an adult in 2008. This pistol was the initial release of the XDm line of pistols and I am sure I over paid for it due to all of the hype at the time. I probably shot 10K+ through that gun before moving on to something different. It was a great beginner blaster and it worked great even with all of the "Fiddling" I did on it. Today it sits in my safe as a backup "Home Defense" blaster when the zombie apocalypse hits. I have thought about selling it several times over the years, but it has too much sentimental value to me to sell. That reminds me to break it out some time this summer and do some shooting with it to knock the dust off of it.

Blue Taurus .357 with a six inch barrel. Sold it.
SIG P230. I had just started working in New York City and it was the only back up we were authorized to carry. Good price and very accurate for a BUG, but not a practical gun. I sold it when I moved back to DC. Never again felt the need to carry a BUG.
My very first gun was given to me. An M1 Garand.
Awesome! Helluva gift and 1st gun! My first was a single shot Remington 514 .22 rifle, still have it. Still have that M1?
My first was a '44 Remington Rand right of out college after I turned 21.
Like a dumbass I traded it off for a Colt 1911 I still have. Wish I would have coughed up the extra cash instead of doing a trade and kept the RR too.
My first was a single shot Remington 514 .22 rifle, still have it.
I have a Remmy 514 as well. Such a simple, sweet shooting rifle. I love it for taking new shooters, especially the young ones, out and letting them shoot.
I got a Mossberg 500 from a pawn shop in '89 followed by a Dan Wesson .357 and a Model 70 3006.
My first gun I bought was a Ruger 10/22 after my high school graduation party in 93. I still have it.

Mine was an $89 870 Express I bought on my 18th birthday (1990) that has taken every type of upland bird you can imagine, 2 turkey, all kinds of small game, quadjillions of clays, waterfowl... not in the best of shape, but it's still running 25 years later.

The first gun I bought as an adult was a Ruger Super Blackhawk. Put it on layaway two weeks before my 21st birthday so I could get that day. It ran me $232 all in and a box of Rem .44 Mag 240 gr JSP cost me all of $8. I still have the gun, I don't see myself ever selling it.
It has made everyone that ever shot it bleed and not many were able to fire all six rounds.
My first gun was a Remington 581 for Christmas when I was 13. I still have it.

Beretta A390 Shotgun about a month after I turned 18, which was the 3rd gun I bought for myself, but first as an adult when I could actually do the entire transaction by myself, Dad bought the others I "paid him back" for them. He had also bought me a 20 ga, a 12 ga, and a remington 7600 in 270 long before I could pay for them myself.
I had a pretty decent collection by the time I got out of tech school.

Is 15 considered to be an adult?
First gun I bought for myself (from a store) was at that age. Needed a rifle to go deer hunting, so I went to the old Gart Brothers store that used to be on Broadway. Went in and they had 55 gallon barrels sitting on the floor with rifles in them. First barrel was $9.95, second was $19.95, third was $29.95, take your pick. Money being hard to come by back then, I picked one from the first barrel and took it to the counter. Asked if they had ammo for it? Sure do he said, as he put a box on the counter. Paid in cash and walked out the door. Don't remember exactly what it was, some kind of bolt action Japanese surplus. No, I do not still have it, traded it for a 38 special some years later.

I was recently divorced in 1988. I bought myself a KGP-100 and a Mini-14 from a hardware store just outside the gate at Offutt AFB. When my (current) wife and I were dating we'd shoot at logs and other stuff floating down the Missouri River from the bank by a cabin where I was staying. There was nothing on the other side of the river except a 30' bluff and about 10 miles of swampy land. Great place to shoot. Sold or traded them both away 10 or 12 years ago, but I have another GP-100 and two Minis.

Seriously....
I bought a sporterized Lee Enfield at a local sporting goods store the summer between my graduation form high school and my enlistment in the Marine Corps. I bought a couple of firearms while I was active duty. After I was released from active duty I went on a spree where I bought/traded/sold guns on a regular and frequent basis until I got married. The last gun I bought then was a Ruger 10/22. I only have a couple of the guns I bought then. We divorced and I just sort of chilled out. I met another woman, we got married and I got more involved in shooting again. When we were very in a family way I came across a Lee Enfield No.1 Mk. III that I asked her if we could afford. She said yes. That wasn't that long ago, I still have it and occasionally shoot it. I bought a lot of guns before that one, but that's the first one I really think of as an adult purchase.

My first purchase wasn't as an adult but I'll claim it anyways. A friend of my Dad's was hurting for money and brought a Win 94 (30-30) by the house hoping to sell it. My dad already had one and so wasn't interested but I asked him what he wanted for it. My dad kind of stepped back and let me work the deal and $175 later (my dad had to drive me to the bank so I was probably 14 or 15) I had bought my first firearm, not counting the 10/22 and single shot 20 gauge which were both gifts over the years. I still have it (as well as that 10/22 and 20 gauge).
My first legitimate adult purchase was a Remington 870 Magnum Express back in the mid 90s. I bought it specifically for a goose hunt during which I didn't fire a single shot. I still have it and it still shoots like a dream.
First handgun was a 2Gen G17 just a couple months after my 21st birthday. I put somewhere around 24,000 rounds through it and eventually sold it to a friend in Florida. It would be nice to have back but I really don't miss it at all.

About a month after I turned 21, I went to The Firing Line and bought a handgun that felt comfortable in my hands. An S&W Sigma 40VE. The heavy as hell trigger, combined with the snap of .40 gave me a lot of bad shooting habits that it took years for me to shake off.

M38 Mosin Nagant! I called it "The Hammer of Thor". Purchased it in early 2009. I wish I hadn't sold it now. First handgun was a Springfield XDM in .40 S&W.
MAK90 from an individual when I was 17. Promptly ordered a Chinese stock set from shotgun news in violation of the 922r and Clinton 94 awb ban. good times. Started an ak addiction that didn't end for 10 years.

IAI Javelina 10mm. 5" barrel version. Got it in the early 90's. Pretty sure it was mismarked in the display case ($225). Owner saw the clerk just finished ringing me up, came over, saw the price and said he couldn't sell me the gun because it was unreliable and would misfeed (blah, blah, blah). I called his BS and asked if he was trying to rescind the sale that had just happened. He backed off and I happily walked out with a big smile on my face. Still got it and still love it. Now wears some elk horn grips I made for it.

You got your priorities right, so you are dangerously close to adulthood.
