Gas water heater just started leaking, there are about 3 places: under the top piece, in various places, water runs down the side from under the top piece (that has screws going into it).

You are going to need a new one.
Damn you are about a month late, last month new regulations changed and water heaters are more efficient... Meaning they will cost more

You might be able to find some old stock, I picked one up because i knew prices would be more. I don't even need one yet.

If you hurry you might still get the old style if the box stores still have some stock left. ^ I also picked up one a month ago due to costs and dimension changes.

Bummer,
Mine did that at the end of Febuary. At least it he'd out until the night we got back from an out of town week long trip.

I bought two older stock water heaters yesterday from HD, the guy said the new and improved ones are running about $70-80 more.

Glad to see I'm not the only person with one sitting in the box until the old one craps out. I told my wife I wasn't crazy.
I showed my wife this thread she rolled her eyes. I went back downstairs where I'm typing this message with my guns

Started leaking about a week ago, again. Hoping it lasts til July, so I will actually have time/funds to replace it.

You need to get it changed out out as soon as possible, or risk a catastrophic failure. I am not talking about an explosion, but more of a seam failure give a sudden release of 40 gallons (?) of water plus the unrestricted flow from the inlet line.
And will always happen when you are not at home.

Agreed. A water heater can trash an entire basement in no time, just with the sudden release of 40 gallons, let alone the fill pipe.

I've drained it. Preparing to replace it today... Thanks all!
Did you get a fancy efficient one? ;)
Curious what the price difference is

I paid 489 for 50 gallon NG one before. While at lowes lady pointed out the replacement model and it was over 600 and required an outlet to run a fan on top. They are also taller and wider so some may end up with smaller capacity in order to fit a tight space.
I replaced mine a couple of years ago. I was told to pay for the extended warranty, because Home Depot and Lowes, the retail brands, often the tanks don't last 5 years.
I replaced two today with the ones I picked up on Thursday, of coarse I couldn't get the exact size so some duct work was needed to comp for the extra height. Took me and my boy 4hrs start to finish, when my dad called to have them put in he was told $500-600 each to install or 2x the cost of the unit.

I am sure you pulled your permit and had it inspected like a good citizen would
Absolutely, every aspect of the county/states requirements were fulfilled..........

Maybe i should have used a more sarcastic tone in my typing [Beer]
I was a contractor for a long time, the county is crazy if they think i am pulling a permit to replace my water heater
Now if you are a complete novice then hite a pro
I picked up on it and laid down thicker.......
