View Full Version : Which dedicated .22LR AR15?
I'm wishing for an AR pattern .22 plinker. Reliability is my primary concern. I'd also like it to be a flat top and include irons, but I think most come that way. If it happened to accept Black Dog magazines, that would be a plus.
Love my Sig 522. It is more reliable than my 10/22 and Black Dog makes mags for it. I have never had a failure of any type with it. If I could keep only one, it would be it.

Another M&P15-22 fan-great .22 plinker. [Beer]
I am running a tac sol upper on a spikes lower and have around 5k through it mostly suppressed and it will eat pretty much anything.
Black dog mags work?
Not with the Smith.

Sig 522. Great rifles, great trigger. Black Dog magazines will work with them.
Spikes pistol lower with a franken upper (7.5" CMMG barrel, free float rail and suppressed). Preban I bought some blkdog mags, and I love this setup.

Nothing but good things to say about the 2 15-22's I am familiar with.

A dedicated CMMG wasp upper on one and mixmaster 7.5" on a sbr. Both, like the sig use BDM mags and feed anything. Had a sig 522, excellent rifle, but someone wanted it more than i did.
For the price, the S&W is tough to beat.
If you are an accuracy guy, which you seem to be, the S&W won't make you very happy.
If you are up for building you own, I can get you set up with a BCG and a barrel, all else is standard AR-15 parts. Our uppers are sub-MOA with most regular bulk ammo, ultra reliable and use Black Dog mags. We do sell the complete uppers as well, but this way you can personalize it how you like it. Several top shooters are using our uppers...Patrick Kelley loves his. He is the guy that does all the Christmas carols on steel with our upper.
Mark,
In this instance I'm just working on a range toy for kids and new shooters, and for steel challenge shooting. Accuracy, just this once, isn't an issue.
However, I am thinking about another dedicated .22 upper with precision in mind. My Nordic doesn't seem all that accurate. I was looking at a Compass Lake and had forgotten you do it too. I'll give you a call next week.
I was looking at a Compass Lake
Frank White at Compass Lake makes one of the most, if not the most, accurate 22 uppers out there. He uses the AF M261 kit and mag adaptors. So you are limited to 10 rounds and you have to buy the mag inserts. They are cheap and easy to find.
My CLE upper will just about clean a NRA 50 yard target with average ammo and iron sights. Forgot how it did with big $$$ ammo and a scope.
Leo shot his at the OTC for years.
For a Steel Challenge rifle, you can not beat the light weight and reliability of the M&P.

Another 15-22 Vote.
Ok Accuracy at 50 yards. Seems to fall apart at 100.
Wife's 1.1" (50Y) average of 3-10 shot groups with CCI Tactical.
Mine 1.3" (50Y) average of 3-10 shot groups with CCI Standard Velocity
Not good compared to my bolt 22lr, but better than I expected. Groups typically double with bulk pack due to fliers. (6-7 form a hole, and 3-4 scatter gun).
Any fans of the HK 416D .22lr? Almost took one home the other day, but decided to read around at what other people liked.
S&W 15-22 ($375 or so), SIG522 ($550 or so), Match grade 22upper on an AR lower ($700 to $1200).
If you want to feed it with Black Dog mags, skip the S&W. If you want an AR15 style 22, those three options are, IMHO the best options.
Funny that this thread just got bumped. I just picked up a used S&W yesterday. Haven't shot it yet.
+1 for CMMG...and yes...blackdog work great.
Pulling the trigger on an AR and only hearing "click", is horrible...unless it's a suppressed 15-22!!
Nice to find this thread. I recently found a ciener kit for cheap $$$. Even with a 1:7 twist, it works okay. Enough that I think I am now addicted to .22 AR15s.
.22 ARs are the shit. I now have two, one a precision shooter and the other (the S&W) more a run-n-gun toy.

What's the precision shooter build? Interested in having one.
