View Full Version : Anyone into Quads?
And no not a paraplegic fetish. Nor ATV's. Worked a hospital seen too many of those injuries. Nope I meant RC ones. Thinking it might be something fun to get into. Aside from the cheap $20-$100 hobby store ones, appears besides the commercial world, theres actually a growing field of small - medium sized drones for racing and otherwise more performance entertainment. The biggest thing that interests me is the growing use of first person camera on the vehicles paired with goggles rather than a handset screen.
Going to start small with a $40 Hubsan x4, and if interest sticks, theres a company that makes a seemingly decent ready to fly FPV racer that you just need receiver and googles? For $500, so I imagine a grand when all said and done. http://www.immersionrc.com/fpv-products/vortex-racing-quad/

I've got a couple of the DJI phantom 2 vision pluses, and love them.
I'm into both the other kinds you mentioned, one of these looks pretty fun though

Have it set up for FPV or just the gimbal camera?

Just the gimbal camera with the onboard view sent to my iPhone 6+.
I want one but I'm too stupid to build my own. I've played with a few DJIs and love his easy they are to control.
I love the DJI but too poor to own one. I would love a FPV with some thermal imaging, be a good way to make some side cash doing roof / window inspections I'm playing with a blade 180 and it's a blast. Ever want to check it out hit me up and I will bring it to work.
ETA: the little protos are fun too
I could scrap one of those in 2.8 seconds. CRA$$$$HHH!!!! Bring mo' money.
Yea but then the crashing starts the fun part of rebuilding [Coffee]
We all could always use another project right?

Was thinking. While the V-22 Osprey had problems. You know what would be neat? TO help with flight time. With enough computer tech into it, couldn't someone make a gasoline quad or sextopter. Not as quick or refined response as an electric motor, but I'd think both flight time and maybe payload could get impressive.

Anyone see the South Park episode where everyone has a drone. It's freaking hilarious...
Advice prease.
Revised list of what I'm looking at. X4 hubsan or dromida ominus for basic non camera + cheerson for lulz.
For Cheap attempt FPV I'm now torn on the fpv version of the ominus, syma x5sw explorers, and while hideous seems good reviews on WLtoys V686G.
Seems hard to evaluate quads as every store/website seems like they all have raving reviews when I know theres no way thats the case.
Unless I find something better, if I stick with it I was thinking something like the immersionrc vortex or similiar style and easy customized. I dont know how strong it is though, I'd kinda like to get into some of the faster stuff like in previous vids in thread. (Maybe not the out of sight in 2 seconds model, but the other terrain manuevering ones that seem fast.)
Had a lot of people local like DJI Phantoms? Found a lightly used for $650 -- But my impression was these fly smooth, but arn't exactly impressive in forward speed department?
EDIT: NM killer deal gone.

Well I can let you check out a dromida of you want the more acrobatic flight but the DJI in my opinion is for camera operations and stable flight only so it's kind of opposite ends of the spectra. The Dromida (not fpv) is a fast and agile quad and pretty cheap to get into but it's not really a customizable quad. You can always build your own thunder power sells some 35amp esc in a four pack for about $150 I think and hit up hobby king for some deals on frames and whatever else you want it to include. Wattflyer.com has some good info and not too many trolls
The DJI Pro is sick, really hate buying into proprietary systems but I would snatch one up in a heartbeat if I could.

Waiting for EA machine H8 to arrive from china, saw enough things to grab it as better than the cheerson cx10 though that ones much more friendly looking.
Dromida Ominus arrived. Awesome in my high ceiling living room. Prop wash enough to spin my overhead fan. My skittish rottweiler pays it no mind. My generally fearless but friendly German shepherd is terrified of it. (Though as I neared the end of my first flight he kept trying to approach it before running away again. As I type this i may return to a mangled drone who knows.
EDIT: Thought he was getting more brave and curious while flying in the back yard. (Not chasing him or anything mind.) Waited till low and bit it. Some correction and I guess not a fun activity for the whole family. PS: Too hot outside after weeks of being so cool phew.
