Anybody know of good books/articles or other resources that explain the different types and at least the common variations? I have two Japanese rifles from my grandfather that he brought back. Neither has the mum intact but the one in better shape I have the papers for it and I would like to clean it up a little bit. The paperwork just says Japanese rifle with the serial number listed. I wish I had the sword and pistol that is also listed.

The bad one has a plugged bore and it is extremely weathered. It sat just inside a unsealed garage door for decades. Probably could salvage some parts of it or hang it on the wall.

The better one is needs a thorough cleaning and inspection but the action hand cycles. At first glance nothing is missing or broken it has just sat in a closet for decades unloved. The top piece of the forearm is warped, could probably use new wood. I think i could get it up and running again without too much effort. I'm not looking to restore to new condition, I just want to be able to take it out every now and then. It is shorter overall than the other with the plugged barrel. I think they are both the same caliber. I will pick them up tomorrow and can take pictures if that helps. I would just like to know more about them like what arsenal they came from and when. What model, stuff like that.

You have an arisaka most likely a type 99. They usually have a cut stock under the front band if they were a bring back because they had to fit em into their duffles. My grandfather had one with a struck mum and a nambu pistol.

A little late, but thanks for that link. I have a bring back Japanese bayonet that I have been trying to identify and that helped greatly.

To the OP - might take it by that gunsmithing school in Trinidad to see if they can check out and tune it up for a reasonable price?
