I was thinking about taking the kids to the Air Show out at the Aurora Reservoir and in looking thru the site I saw:

Park regulations prohibit firearms on the property.

http://www.cosportaviation.org/items.html

My first thought was that I assume since the CO Sports Aviation was running the show that even though it is public land, that they can restrict CCW. But it says "Park Regulations". Is this another instance of munis and govt having regulations on the books that were struck down, but that they don't care- they leave them in place.

Is it actually an open carry restriction- is Aurora allowed to do that (Home Rule?)

Is the Aurora Reservoir actually not govt owned, but is some kind of other entity?

I did find the Aurora Rules and Regs for parks and open spaces: https://www.auroragov.org/cs/groups/public/documents/document/004025.pdf

6240. Firearms and Deadly Weapons. Possession of firearms or deadlyweapons, including bows and arrows, air rifles and paintball guns, areprohibited unless in a designated area.

That can't restrict CCW for permit holders, correct?

Is the CO Sport Aviation misinterpreting the reg, or trying to overreach with a rule and apply it to CCW?

I know, I know, concealed is concealed- but I was really interested in the legality.
1. Can Aurora ban CCW at the park? ( I don't think so, or could they if they have metal detectors, I guess for this event?)
2. If CO Sport Aviation is running a private (?) event at the park, can they restrict CCW? (I almost think they can, but it actually has nothing to do with the Park Regs. The private function on public land is what is making me wonder.)

I'd think if a private entity could restrict CCW, a lot of towns would just 'lease' to a sympathetic entity where ever they want to restrict CCW.

Private function could ban, but they'd have to run everything through a metal detector to be successful. Just like Taste of Colorado does pat downs. Aurora can certainly ban open carry if it is a government park. Lots of parks have similar signage.

Successful or legal to run thru a detector? For govt agencies, they have to have a metal detector to ban CCW, do I remember that correctly? A private entity would not have to do that?

Is the Taste a controlled access area? Never been before to this one. Others I've been to are just open streets/area with tickets for food- but that was before 9/11.

Last time I went it seemed like they funneled traffic to one entrance, it's been years though. What I mean about the detectors is like how some concerts may wand people, while others may not, at the same venue. You want to go in, you follow their rules. If they aren't wanding, I'm not sure I'd even remember to think about it.

You can legally carry concealed at that event if you have a valid CCW.

It is common for public parks to have no firearms signs Or rules. Just know that your CCW exempts you from Said rules.

Agree with J. I called Chatfield a few years ago because their site stated the same thing. They confirmed it did not apply to CCW holders.

Nice! The wife just won us 4 tickets to the show. Last time I saw the Blue Angels, I was near my sons age (4) and I remember it to this day. I'm so excited to go, and I won't feel naked without my CCW thanks to this Thread. Anyone else going?
