I worked Memorial Day checking shooters into the range. The third guy through the door that morning attempted to convince me he was Military so he could get a discount on his fees. His only "proof" was a Marine Corps bumper sticker glued to the outside of his wallet. Being a Marine myself I asked him what unit he was or had been with, to which he replied " the 3-73rd Recon Division stationed in Ft. Collins Colorado" I told him that wasn't a real unit and charged him full price. He put up a half hearted protest saying that it was and he was a 3531 mechanic and that the "3-73rd Recon Div. was absolutely a real unit" then walked out after paying full price.
A few hours later I see this joker standing outside the office alone. I approached him and asked him what unit he had been with again and he replied " MAG 29 in Hawaii" (MAG 29 is in California) "Oh so you weren't with 3-73rd Recon Division?" I asked. " No, but my buddy was and he beat into that unit and Ive been upset about it ever since". I then informed him of who he was spouting his Bullshit to and asked why in the hell he would try and pull a stunt like that on Memorial day of all days just to try and save $3! We had a largely one sided conversation of him listening and me getting him up to speed on what might happen to him in the future if he were to say such things in the presence of say an actual Reconnaissance Marine, who happened to be in a bad mood. I walked off wishing ill will towards him and his ilk.

Great way to start out Memorial Day.

I get people trying to get the 10% LE/Mil discount on our website on a regular basis who are not LE/Mil. I went to changing the code every so often and requiring proof. Actual LE/Mil seem to be okay with it. I have had a few get really pissed, but turns out that they were not LE/Mil at all. Sad indeed.

Could have been interesting if my BiL was there. He was FORECON and probably wouldn't be so forgiving. Probably wouldn't get physical, but could verbally twist the guy into a pretzel.

Good grief, just because a location has "Fort" in its name doesn't mean there's an active military base there. Fort Collins hasn't had an active military base in about 150 years! (Camp Collins was abandoned in 1866 and officially decommissioned in 1867).

Sure a marine unit only 1000 miles from the nearest ocean [pileoshit](I know there are some small marine/navy personel scattered around) but Ft. Collins.

I do know a Marine who works at CU-Boulder in ROTC. I assume though he would not be "stationed" there though?

Keep'em honest. They have no idea what it means to be prior millitary (any branch, even puddle jumpers;)). They want to play 'Army' without understanding the sacrifice it means to those of us and our families who did our time. It is just a video game death to them when talking about those of us that did not come back or did with troubles. It sickens us but only confuses them why we get so upset. They want to be part of the 'club' not realizing that instant gratification is not part of the vocabulary. The motto being 'Hurry up and wait'. It took most of us at least four years, if not a full 20+, doing whatever it is we did. My hat is off to all that provide(d) service to this country, usually during the prime of your life, with little pay, time off, or even thanks.

That and the fact that there is no Recon Division. Recon operates at Battalion level, Force at Company. And there has never been a Marine unit known as 3-73rd anything.

My favorite (I was on mid deployment leave), standing on the corner of the exit from county line going west to park meadows.
He was wearing....
Sniper
Sapper
Airborne
Air assault
Special forces
ranger tabs over the 101st (kickin chickens [emoji5]️) patch on his right shoulder in a field jacket. In August with a 10th group patch on his left shoulder.

After exchanging some kind words, he left his corner and took his jacket off.

It is sad really. So many of us served and were not out there killing the bad guy, SF, Ranger and on and on. I still remember my thoughts on my choice that did not always work out. Hmm, nice warm Hospital. After deployments that had me in a GP medium in 110 weather and a non-insulated shack without heat with it 20 outside....... Did my time and paid my debt. I have a co-worker. His is a box kicker E6 (supply) He has no hand after an IED hit his convoy. Has he sacrificed less because he was not SF? I think not.

The imposters just kind of annoy me unless they are trying to use it for gain. Just some thoughts from an old guy.

I dunno... It seems like what you did was a great service to those that gave their lives for the rest of us. I applaud you for that and I think it makes for a fitting tribute to the fallen.

Yes, bad time to do this just like the email from a place I got talking about "celebrating" Memorial day. I replied that it was in bad taste since we do not "celebrate" the dead...........

I almost wish prior service guys rated an Mil ID for life just to spot the fakes easier. Not everyone enrolls in the VA, IRR only lasts for a few years, not everyone stays in for 20, or medically retired, and the DD-214's are too big to carry around plus they say not for Identification right on them.

I still have my old ID card from when I ETS in '88. It was issued when I reenlisted in '84 so it just makes me sad to look at myself 31 years younger and 60 lbs lighter.

From Colorado DMV website:

Does Colorado offer a military identifier for your driver's license or ID card?

Yes, you may request a military identifier and/or the word “VETERAN” to be added to your driver’s license or ID card. When applying, you must present:Valid military identification card (common access card)ORDD214

If adding the military identifier, you must choose between Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard or Navy. No additional fee is required to obtain the military identifier or veteran indicator. You may select the military identifier, veteran indicator or both to display on your license or ID card. The military identifier and veteran indicator do not extend to spouses or dependents.

Well, I'm a civvie, so I wouldn't know bits like that, but I DO know that there's no military base in Fort Collins, hence why I latched on to that bit :P

You know I get stumbled when I get asked "where were you stationed?" because I was all over the place. Then they ask "what ya do?" and again I say I did many things. Started as an 0311, reenlisted to become a 0151 because I was newly married and tired of being in the bush M-F and deployed every 18 months. But the joke was on me because I got sucked into the battalion S3. Who knew that there were admin poges in the Bn S3?! Not me.

Then came the G3 Plans position. Once you get the Plans Chief stink on you it is hell trying to get out of the plans shop. I literally spent the next 15 years PCSing from G3 to G3, word of mouth endorsements from one OpsO to another kept me from doing anything else. I did manage to escape for 5 months as a PMI at the range, but that was short lived when someone recognized my name and I got sucked back to the Plans Shop. Finally finished as an 0511, MAGTF Plans Chief. We finally got our own MOS in 1994 (9919) then in 1997 it was redesignated 0511.

How in the hell do I explain all that in a casual conversation? Did I mention the 4 years I spent in 29 Palms as a 0151/3531 Driver?

The Stumps is the "Oasis of the High Desert" according the Welcome Aboard brochure my wife got from Family Services in LeJeune before we PCSed. When we arrived in town in the u-haul, she broke down and cried in the truck. I apologized and said it would only be for a couple of years. We finally left 4 1/2 years later. That green weenie seemed to have followed me, even out to the desert. [Sweat]

It is all the crack houses and seeing folks hauling in water that will make you think hard about turning around the first time you come in. It being a dry heat isn't very comforting when it is a 118 degrees in the shade.

Whether you were a box kicker, admin pogue, grunt or whatever MOS, you served. Good on ya.

When I was stationed at Williams AFB in Mesa, AZ everyone used to say that "dry heat" thing. Yeah? Well it's dry in an oven, too. I don't want to live there either.

That..... is hilarious and tragic at the same time. Was she able to put a brave face on it for those 4.5 years? Did she get used to it and even start liking it, or was she counting each day until she could leave?

She counted every day. Thirty years later she still reminds me occasionally about "doing her time in the desert" for the Corps. I smile and remind her that it could have been worse, we could have gotten stuck in Yuma, AZ, and at that point she changes the conversation. Nuff said.[Flower]
