Looking for Pack out outfitters near Steamboat.

Hoping to get some recommendations for outfitters that pack out near Steamboat or Kremmling. Googled, but only 2 came up and were kind of pricey at over $1000 to pack an elk out. Or is that the going rate?

Most outfitters that offer a pack out service are usually pricey due to the fact that they are on standby waiting for your call to come get an elk. You may be better off looking into renting a few horses from Sombrero Ranches ( if you have any horse experience) then you will have access to them for the entire hunt. Sombrero will drop horses off at your camp with all necessary tack and feed and then pick them up when your hunt is over.

Renting horses is great. That's what we do. I believe the rate is approximately $450 @ horse per week. Davis Tent has great panniers. In my opinion use them to pack not riding for hunting. The people that ride them for hunting wind up getting injured or other negative consequences.

I think you can get leads from the rangers, as I think anyone renting horses or packing for money has to be permitted by the feds.

I have to disagree with you about the people who ride them for hunting get injured. I use horses every year, just like my dad and his dad have done. The worst thing that has happened was when one day dad was hunting alone and his horse decided he had had enough and headed back to camp while dad was glassing, that would be 12 miles back to camp, leaving dad on foot with his gear and no pack. More accident happen during a pack out due to inexperience with pack horses and how to properly load a horse with meat and horn. If you can handle a pack horse and the chores that come with them, then hunting horse back is nothing more than an enjoyable mountain trail ride.
