I was driving up Witter Gulch this morning about 10:25 and was near the top about 1/2 mile from Hwy 103. I saw what I thought was a bear statue at the end of someone's drive and realized it was a real bear. As I approached he took off a little ways into the trees so I parked on the side of the road at the end of the drive and shut off the truck. After a few minutes of hiding in the trees he came out and burglarized the trashcan.
As you can tell he's a pretty large bear. Those trash cans are probably 4 feet tall and his back was just about even with the top of the can.
I thought it was great how gentle he was about turning the can over and lowering it to the ground. I wonder what kind of goodies he made off with in that bag!
As I pulled away I passed the Mtn View Waste truck picking up the trash.

ETA: Yep, fixed. Oh my, he's a big fella. I wouldn't want to run across him in the wilderness when he's having a bad day.

Sorry...I think I fixed it.
Due to the stupidity of the homeowner that bears days are numbered. The homeowner should be tagged, relocated and shot in the ass with rubber shot to scare them off. Dumbasses......

It's so cool to see the bears. He was a big one for sure. We see them several times a year up here - all sizes. Sucks he got into the trash though...
That wasn't his first rodeo. He laid the trash can over nice and gentle then took his sack lunch off to a quiet spot. Good size bear too. It's a bummer that this will probably leed to a relocation for this guy.

I'm not sure the homeowner did anything wrong in this instance. The can was on the road and the truck was minutes away. It was a bear being a bear. If it wasn't that can it would've been one a few houses down. Not to say that people aren't stupid most of the time when it comes to wildlife.
We have them snooping around our property on a regular basis. We have a trash can we keep outside but only put paper items and boxes and similar items in it. They get into it on occasion. Anything that smells like food I take to our dumpster at work on a daily basis.

Cool video. I love how nonchalant the bear is about it all, almost like he was picking up a to-go order he'd phoned in ...

Yeah, definitely not a homeowners fault... Not the bears fault either! I like how the bear cased the place!
I would love to see one like him this fall while I have my bow and a bear tag! Cool video and cool animal for sure!

Last fall we had a bear open my wife's car. She took the kids to school in the early AM and came back asking me if I left her car door open the night before. I didn't and went to investigate. There was mud smeared around the door handle and a little on the back seat but no serious damage.
My bud in Central City had a car trashed by a bear that got in and got trapped in there. Bear freaked the hell out and shredded everything.
Pretty amazing that they can figure out how to open car doors.

I think the policy of killing bears that act like bears is what needs to be changed. We have bears rather prolifically here in Boulder and while those of us that live west of Broadway all have bear-resistant trash cans that require a lever to open, I've never quite understood why the policy is to automatically kill an animal that is acting like animals act.
-granted, I'd be all for killing every raccoon in the neighborhood but no, the city/county can't be bothered with those...
When I get my bear tag I hope to see one that nice! He is a good size bear!
Wow, that was a neat little video. That bear is FAR larger than I was expecting, and it certainly wasn't his first rodeo. Clever bear!

Yeah...I was courageously tucked safely in the cab of a truck.
