Got the pins out of the front sight and the gas block with no problem. The front sight pressed off easily. I can't seem to figure out the best way to rig up on the gas block to get it off.

Anyone have any thoughts on the best way to get something behind the gas block to press it off?

Thanks.

There's a guy in your hood who can do it. It's better using a press to pop it off. If you're local guy is tied up drop in and use my press. Before you give it another try, let it soak over night in some hoppes cleaner to loosen that burnt powder residue. Or any gun cleaner you have on hand. DO NOT USE BRAKE OR CARB KLEEN.

Pickling it in Kroil right now. Have a press to get it apart. Just seems like I might need to make some sort of tool to rig up under the block. The setup I used for the front sight won't work.

I've got one of these and a press if you can't get it to budge.. Basically each cutout is sized for each barrel component.

Nice. if not on hand a beat up open end wrench works.

That looks like just the ticket. Might have to fabricate something similar tomorrow.

I was going to try a wrench. Seems nothing was quite the right size.

Yeah. Ended up cheating a bit. Was trying to take the lower handguard retainer off and save it but found out I could get a new one for $20 so I just cut the old one off.

The hell you say. I'll probably just order one. I need to get an A1 flash hider ordered anyways. I seem to recall I owe you one of those.

Not an issue. Consider the f/hider as atonement for that buffer.
I have a few sets of nicely refinished (Ztekniks work) furniture sets, US sets (somewhere) and a shit load of other treasures for low, low prices.

Industrial jobs require industrial solutions. A shop press will take anything off, even it wasn't designed to come off. But it tends to do a better job than nancyin' around with punches and hammers.

I realize we don't want to stress our valuable properties un-necessesarily - but there are varying definitions of "necessary"

Having just recently fucked up a couple of office chair piston removals, I do realize that sometimes enough force and THE PROPER TOOL(S) is(are) required, but I remain adamant in my position.

Oh, I have access to industrial tools. What the 10 ton press won't disassemble the 20 ton usually does. And in the rare instance the 20 ton won't handle the job I have access to a 100 ton press that will disassemble or destroy pretty much anything.

My main issue was I didn't have the proper tool to support the gas block to rig it up in the press and didn't want to screw anything up by just rigging something up. I was going to address that issue and find a suitable fixture but figured the time spent doing that wasn't worth it at this point. Now, If I ever decide to put the new handguard retainer on I'll definitely know I need the proper fixture to press the gas block off.
