MOSQUITO'S................... EVERYWHERE . They're swarming this area like a homeless convention. Thought one of our dogs was trying to catch another bird. Turns out she was being lifted off the ground by a bunch o insects.

But we need the rain......
I saw a bunch of warnings about tons of mosquitos. The warm weather is making them hatch now after all this rain.

You want some eucalyptus essential oil, especially this one: Eucalyptus citriodora. Also known as "eucalyptus lemon". Nature's (God's) excellent bug repellent without the side effects!

I was out in the yard last night finishing up the drip system for the garden, they were very thick. Costco has a mosquito trap that I might try out.

Personally I hate the bastards but the rain has been saving my butt on my water bill so far so I'm good with getting some repellant and dealing with it.

Up in NOVA they are annoying. I was outside at dusk for just 15min and the next morning I woke up with bites on my face and on my thigh.. (and I had been wearing jeans).

I'm one of the fortunate few that doesn't get mosquito bites. Well, they bite me but I don't get the red, itchy bumps we know as "bites". But yeah, I hate them anyway, they pester the shit out of me. I've been trying to make sure I didn't have any standing water on my property because I knew a little warm weather would bring them out but it's a losing battle anyway because there is a lake across the street.

I use OFF when they start to get bad. I have been using it since I can't remember when with no ill effects. My wife uses the herbal stuff and it doesn't work as well as OFF.
I prefer DEET.....100%. Better living through chemistry.

I'm glad this is really the only month they're a problem. They are a PITA though.

Try Alaska if you want to really get "bugged".
I just assume they are micro drones.
When I was visiting a friend up in BC, we came across a guy fly fishing. He had a double barrel 12 gauge and a canoe paddle. I was puzzled, because I didn't see a canoe anywhere. I figured the shotgun was for bears, because there are a lot of them up there. So I asked the guy what the canoe paddle was for....
He says" I use the shotgun to take the mosquitoes out of the air, the canoe paddle is to finish them off while they're stunned..."

Never lived in Alaska soI can't personally compare, but mosquitos are one of the big reasons I won't be Moving back to MO where all my family lives, IL where I was stationed for 2 tours/10 years, or KY where my wifes family lives and we own a house.
I HATE BUGS. They, well, bug me.
+1 on the Alaska skeeters. Only had the pleasure of fishing there once, but Holy Bejeebus!

Haven't been bit ... yet this year....
I grew up in the midwest and while the mosquitoes there are bad I've never seen anything like Ft Polk, LA. Any soldier who has been to JRTC in the summer can tell you they don't get any worse than that both in size and number. I thought we had one of our scout helos coming back in and instead of an OH-58D in the sky I turned square into a swarm of "skeeters."

Moved from Louisiana due to the heat, humidity, and the skeeters aka state bird. Can't enjoy the outdoors when your flailing your arms trying to swat them. Only place that I've been to that could compete was a little island in Gran Teton N. P. that we took a ride to, we all bought head nets after that place. Went camping in Idaho and was disappointed the mosquitos were pretty bad, funny thing was the bites didn't itch. Fort Collins has a few, nothing that really bothers me, but have been chased by a small swarm bike riding along the river. About the only thing worse than mosquitos are chiggers, they really itch and there's no satisfaction in swatting them.

Yeah, my wife makes her own mix of the Terra Shield. She uses Lemon Grass, Euc, Lavender, Peppermint, blended with Witch hazel and water....... WORKS AMAZING!!!

I'm currently in Costa Rica. Skeeters and sand fleas are horrendous. The travel guides all said to skip any witchcraft potions and use deet. There is dengue fever in the skeeters here. Not messing around. Several other visitors are getting eaten alive using their home grown and Eco friendly stuff. They are now buying the $35 cans of Off in the sundry shop. We brought 3 cans and 2 bottles.

my late FIL was from minne soda. I can tell you MN has mosquito's big enough to fuk a turkey on all 4's.
I read this thread and laughed along with the posts because I haven't seen any yet this year. Then I went for a few runs and stood outside cooling down. A big, sweaty guy like me is apparently a mosquito buffet. There were zero bugs when I mowed my lawn last night. I guess they all hatched over night and are pretty hungry.

When I was at a school in Ft. Benning I got a hold of some ridiculously potent (like 90%) DEET. Didn't work as well as I'd hoped, but it did make my skin burn a little and I'm pretty sure it softened the outer layer of the grip on my weapon.
I've had my share of skeeters, ticks, and chiggers, and I gotta say the fucking sand fleas in Asscrackistan are worse than all of them. You can hold your hand over the dirt at night and literally watch them jump onto you by the dozens. And those bites itch for a LONG time.
[ROFL2] You're skinny enough to run between them, please.
I think I've lost weight since I last saw you too. You're one to talk though, being only 2/3 my size.
Stopped by my dads last night and checked up on a few things....dear god it was like hummingbirds by the thousands. I swear the drive home looked like tommy boy with me trying to kill the ones that got in the truck, the three year old pointing them out, the wife grabbing the wheel as I made an effort to take them out, I hate those damn things with a passion.

Just hold your breath, they use the CO2 in your exhale to home in.
I'm from Minnesota. My Dad says that the cool weather they've been having has delayed the mosquitoes in shedding their winter coats, which means they are extra-hungry this year.
When I was growing up, I had a pair of mosquito-skin mukluks and choppers. They were nice to wear when ice-fishing. [Coffee]
We've had a nice steady breeze at the house, so we've been fairly lucky. The 'skeetos here in Colorado don't have the weight it takes to push against moving air.
While on a dog hunt in WY, jumped out of the truck walked a few yards then ran back for DEET. Was wearing shorts, received several dozen mosquito bites in a matter of a few minutes. The lumps had lumpy lumps. It was a wet spring, and there were thousands of little puddles of water as far as the eye could see. They could probably breed in a soda can.

On a fishing trip on the Grand Mesa once...
We pulled up the shore to watch the shore, look for fish rising, read the water, etc. when we heard a slight tapping. It took us a minute to realize that it was the mosquitos hitting the windows. I've been to Alaska a couple of times but I never recall them attacking a truck. Whatever well laid plan we came up with changed to get-the-boat-in-the-water-and-get-as-far-from-shore-as-we-can-as-quickly-as-we-can. I recall having a pretty good day. Those fish aren't generally big, but they sure are fun.

Those mosquitoes are really thick here in TX after all of that rain we had. A few days ago the wife and I were at wally world and spotted these citronella plants claiming to keep mosquitoes away, and we look at each other and said "what the hell, $12 each ain't gonna break the bank". So we purchased a couple of them, put one for the front porch and one on the back. I tell'ya fellas, we ain't never been happier to spend the $24 that we did!! Them little blood suckers will stay away while we enjoy our porch!! As for PT though, deet is needed. I keep a can of OFF in my POV.

DGARA about other places mosquitos, I don't live there.
This year is the worst we have seen out here. With in a few seconds out side the door, we are literally covered by a swarm. Typical walk from truck to house, 30 seconds and half a dozen bites. Back to carrying can of repellent in the vehicle.
