So....

I'm fed up with comcrap and cable. I am switching to Centurylink in my area on Monday. They are a DSL service. I'm assuming I'll need a phone jack in the room that I have my computer in. I've seen some DIY tutorials on youtube, et al, but do not trust myself to do it. Whom do I call to install a phone jack in a room for DSL?... Does anyone on here do that sort of work and have a price point I would be looking at?

Thank you.

If Century Link is doing the install they will take care of it. Otherwise it's super super easy. 2 conductors from your outside box into your room. Home Depot has everything you need.

Magic Jack goes for $35 a year after initial purchase of the Jack. Plugs into wall outlet and router and your good to go.

I opted for the self-install not realizing I did not have a jack in this room... I'll hit up Home Depot and ask questions then cause the NID is right outside the window, lol.

Not quite what I'm looking for, but thank you.

Century Link has wireless modems. You can get your own independent of them. They plug into a convenient phone jack and you can pick it up any where you want. There are wireless connection thingys that plug into a usb port if your computer doesn't have wireless internally.

Go with a wireless modem and put it wherever you currently have a phone jack.
Ours is sitting alone in the basement. I did have to get a wireless printer, but the prices on them have dropped dramatically.

Run a new dedicated cat 5 cable to the NIU and get a good modem to start with. The tech support in the Philippines is horrible so try to eliminate ever having to call them, write down your credentials and modem settings in case you have to set up your modem again in the future. They generally won't come out and fix wiring issues or run phone lines so just do it yourself or have someone do it. I have them because I can't get cable internet here, if I had a choice I wouldn't have it. 12 meg speeds is all I get but it works most of the time.

I ran a piece of cable on the outside of house to the CL box and punched through wall to inside. CL tech wired it and put a nice wall plate on it and we were good to go.

Once again, thanks for the PMs, tips, suggestions, etc. I went from a 5up/1down cable to a 40up/5down DSL for over half less!!

Thank you.
