If someone was not going to shoot but wanted to check out the festivities is this worth the drive?

I'll be shooting the 3 gun match on Sunday. My oldest son is coming out from MO to shoot it with me. I can't wait!

I'm planning on being there Sat and Sun. Shooting the PITA Co. State Shoot this weekend at the trap range, but next weekend is reserved for the "most funnest" shoot of the year.

It's not too late to come out to the PITA Trapshoot and show us what U got! Perfect weather today, shot my second best singles score ever.

For those who have shot the 3 gun before, or are in the know, do the shotgun stages have slugs/buckshot or just birdshot?

The Rat
06-09-2015, 12:09
The regular monthly 3-gun matches out there have been only birdshot for the last year. (Which is how long I've been going.) I sure hope they don't spring a need for slugs at the last minute, because no one would be prepared for it.

Ill be there, I'm doing the Saturday Tac Pistol, Tac rifle, Precision Rifle (dont know why i'm wasting my money), and the Biden Challenge. Heading up Friday night to get drinks with everyone at the bar event. Is anyone going to that?

Is the Biden Challenge just two shots through a door? I have an over and under I could use.

Saturday am for a quick sighting in 100, 200 and 300 for me. I'll hang out for lunch and maybe shoot out on the 1000y area if I can find a spotter to get more dope for the class next week.

Side by Side with about 10 reactive targets. No doors unfortunately.

Any idea what time the 3 gun match starts?

Registration at 9, hopefully shoot at 10. Hope to see you there Carey!

Is there a list of start times for the different matches?
Specifically what time does long range precision rifle match start?
thx

No start times for specific matches. 9am start, you shoot at your pace. The Biden challenge today was with a provided Remmy 870 pump gun. (NOT like last year) What a disaster. I shoot an over/under for trap and skeet. I shoot a VersaMax for 3gun, I don't do the pump thing. what a disaster. If you are used to shooting 3gun with a semi-auto, don't even bother. (BTW, the Cowboy Action guys with their side-by-side shottys spanked EVERYBODY!!!)
If you just want to come out and see what it's all about, yes, it's worth the trip, but bring your guns and ammo, 'cause you'll want to shoot.
Say hi to the guy with the Modern Musket hat on.

It was a disaster. I heard rumors that they are providing a semi auto next year. We will see.

I "kinda" figured it out today, (only three shooters for day two of the Biden Challenge...quitters!) Took 50 seconds off my score from yesterday!!! WooHoo! Okay, times still sucked compared to the the Cowboy Action dudes with their sbs shotties.
So, thanks for everyone that helped put this shoot on, and for Dave Claypool for inspiring me to do shoot better, and to my new BFF that found the charging handle to my Versamax that fell out on stage 3, that was no where to be found at stage 4.

Shot pistol great, shot carbine great, overall, pleased with my shooting.

Basically, can't wait for next year.

Was the pump shotgun malfunctioning **or** when you say disaster do you mean you had a hard time with the pump?

SonOfDisaster

I don't know what everyone is complaining about, the 870 was way better than a break action! I ran it in 38 seconds officially but shot it for fun with my M2 and did it in 20 seconds. I think the Biden challenge was the most fun out of everything! Got 2nd in carbine and pistol, 1st in shotgun, and 1st in 3 Gun! I'll definitely be back next year!

It was just difficult running the course like it was supposed to be run. There were 2 reactive targets that are meant to be shot in quick succession. But that is almost impossible to do when you have to pump. Also there were multiple reactive targets that failed to fall or deploy the clay when shot.

And if soneofdisaster goes next year I need an ammo sponsorship to atleast get within 20 seconds of his times.

I was squadded with SOAG, and it was gun watching him shoot. It sounded like he had a 3 round burst setting for some of the close rifle targets. His nearest competition was 50 seconds off. I managed sixth using new rifle, shotgun and pistol setups, so I felt pretty good about that result.

I'm just upset that I didn't pay for my times to count. As a vendor, I shot for free so I ran the rifle stage in 32 sec on Sat (with a few goofing off moments) and still would have ended up in 2d. On Sunday, I ran the rifle/pistol in 45 (clean) and the pistol stage in 27 sec. Oh, and I ran them all in flip flops. There was lots of butthurt from the multicam, sponsored shirt, specality gun group when I ran faster times in shorts and flip flops and my mags in my pockets. shooting is software, not hardware. It was a beautiful weekend for shooting.

Hoser, I meant that I couldn't quite wrap my mind around having to pump the gun. I only shoot break-open and semi auto shotties. Second day was much better. Last year you "shot what u brought".
And yes, was great shooting weather both days!

Not that I know of. I was able to flip through the pile of scorecards at the end of the day to see how I did. Based on the organization of the shooting events, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Here was my run on that stage. I wish I would have know there was no time penalty for B & C hits. I slowed up and shot it clean with all As. One of the targets on the 2d box fell so I paused for a second as I'm used to stopping and re-shooting the stage but since I was a vendor, I just kept going. 45:83 wasn't too bad for just f'ing off and in flip flops.

It was the flip flops...they're more aerodynamic for running and the lighter weight makes target transitions faster.

Nice run. I heard the disgust from some of those heavily geared up out here.
Our daughter use to shoot skeet in Timnanth, with her 500 mossy. She usually averaged 80% success against those using $$$ custom fit shotguns. The tears flowing from those shooters was entertainment itself.

Here's a brief perspective:

Most of my shooting (outside of hunting with my father as a kid & bb gun wars) started in Ranger Bn. We spent all of our time focusing on 5 things: Physical Training, Basic Marksmanship, Medical, Battle drills/CQB, and fixed wing & rotary wing insertions. So from 6 am to 6 pm, every day we were working on those things. No less than 5 days per week, every week. Thats 70 hours a week for training; about 14 hours a week per skill, 56 hrs per month, approx 650 in a year, etc... That's for each skill. For shooting alone, we spent 650 hrs per year working on just fundamentals. That's not counting applying those fundamentals in live fire battle drills, CQB, and live fire FTXs. So a typical 4 yrs in Ranger Bn gets you approx 2500 hrs training on each of those skills. Now, this does not factor in basic training or deployments. Those are applications of the skills and also learning events and will change those number a bit (I was a grunt, I'm trying to keep the math simple). Now add in the training I've received working for other groups/agencies and as an instructor over the last 15+ years. Being an instructor and being able to teach at some of the best schools in the world (FBI Quantico, Academi/TC, DoS, DoD) I've had to ensure those fundamentals are flawless. You can't teach something you can't do or haven't done yourself. Now, this is not to toot my own horn here but to show that it takes more than a 8 hr or even 2-3 courses to be trained. Medics never stop practicing and training their skills. Firefighters (when they're not eating) are working on their skills. To be a shooter, you have to CONTINUOUSLY work on your skills. You must dry fire, live fire, try new things, FAIL a couple times, learn odd techniques, research proven methods,Fail some more, etc... It takes lots of hours. I'm not the greatest shooter but I hold up in gunfights fairly well. I've spent THOUSANDS of hours on basic fundamentals alone. Added in with other skills, I've literally spent tens of thousands of hours training and practicing to get to where I am. Not everyone's path is this long; some are longer. The point is that it takes continuous training from experienced and knowledgeable instructors to improve. Youtube can't teach you and you won't learn much from your couch either. You have to put in the hours. There is no shortcut or gadget that will get you around that. Some of the gadgets make things easier, but they don't make you better. Only training does that.
