So I just got a New to me 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland
It only came with one key I'd like get more but it's my understanding you have to get them dealer/locksmith made unless you have 2 Keys already then you can do a self program . ( supposed to be an anti valet thief measure )
Any one ever done this and have a price point?
OR any suggestions of a locksmith since I'm sure the dealer wants an arm and a leg....
Also anyone know of a salvage yard that will come tow away a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a blown front drive shaft and a hole in the tranny and give me the best value ? It's located in Erie ....

Don't quote me, but I don't think early WKs had e-keys. If not, you can just get copies made at Ace. If it is a smart key, then you're going to have to cough up the dough.
Also, does the ZJ have a 5.2L motor, or a 4.0?

The Key is a Sentry Guard Key ( transponder chip) and has the "integrated" Remote so yeah I know it takes a smith or the stealership to make a copy.
The Zj is a V8 5.2 Motor was fine.. ate about a quart of oil every 3k , 256K miles on it .
*edit*
the zj also has a new cat only 400 miles on it ....
Home Depot makes keys for vehicles- computerized ones, too. I have a GJC. I think it cost around $70.

Very good to know... cause I'm one with just one key myself for Heep [Beer]
I remember reading that Ace / Home Depot etc. can "clone" the sentry key cards, meaning you'll end up with an exact working copy of your key. This won't work for programming any additional keys because the system thinks that you just stuck the same key in there twice. But if you just need another key, the $60-70 is probably a lot better than the hundreds a dealer will charge.
Kade there are a few mobile locksmith that can do keys/transponders. Google can help, I'm not near the office or I'd have an idea who I have used for a few of the office cars.

True Value hardware has key for around $20 here in Pueblo. I think you program the key by inserting unprogrammed key within 15 seconds of removing programmed key.
Or $25 on ebay

Ah ha.
Well, when you say a hole in the tranny, are you talking about just the pan, or is the valve body shot?
