View Full Version : Fridge/Freezer shat itself
Freezer I noticed looked glossy moist. Looked like it was warming up. I figured maybe it was some auto defrost or the ice chute got stuck open again. Come home from work tonight, fridge is warm, freezer still cool from the residual ice.
Before I start frantically looking for new unit. (Hurray we might just make all major appliances replaced in under a year@!) Any good trouble shooting tips to try and get it fixed and running again for a mechanical idiot? Lights on, think I hear something running but not like the full blown loud noise of the I imagine compressor.) Big double whirlpool gold unit.
I just replace a thermostat on mine when it stopped cooling. The coil froze into a solid block so it wasn't circulating air from the freezer into the fridge. Turned it off for a couple of days with a space heater in front of it to melt the ice (took the back panel off from inside the freezer) then changed the thermostat. I think it cost about $20.

First thing to check is that all the coils are clean.
Definitely pull it out and check it isn't froze up, clean out dust as there could be lots.
do all lights come on when you open doors? Maybe check for a fuse, mine has a panel up top which blew a fuse only a year after we got it. Sears wanted $500 for the whole panel as they said it was a single piece and didn't sell the fuse by itself. Home Depot had a 3 pack of those fuses for under $10. Replaced it and no problem since.
model would be a good start. Or atleast a rough description. Side by? High end? Of its harvest gold its from the 80s
So far it could be compressor. Contactor. Defrost timer. Tstat. A fan. Dirt. Or a fuse
Side by side whirlpool gold, was at end of post. Not harvest gold I wouldnt think.. House is about 9 years old, and a lot of the other appliances were all this Whirlpool gold.
So on the back solid steel plate and just a cardboard dust cover. It had all screws except in the bottom center a tiny screw head I can't actually find a small enough wrench to pull off. Tore up the cover slightly to pull off either end. Other than dusty, from there I cant see signs of any ice or anything else obvious.
Lights are on in fridge. Still not sure if its fan or compressor I hear when I still had it plugged in.
Ended up calling for service from a Columbine fireplace and appliance near here. Suprisingly had 6+ year history of reviews with like no bad ones. (Usually even good places have 4 stars from a few 1 star's) Not available till tuesday though unless someone cancels.
If you want to poke at it more im sending my cell # and I can walk you thru most of it
