So i know that when you trade in your vehicle to a dealer, you'll only get tax on the trade difference. What about registration and plates??? Do you have to pay the fees for the whole original tax value or do they give you a break when they see the bill of sale with your trade in vehicle? I'm in Adams county. Thanks

You get a pro rated amount back from the trade in car.
You will be charged the whole rate for the new year for new car and get a discount from the old one.
I believe they prorate the owner's tax on your previous vehicle. You need to bring the old vehicle plate and registration.
The above is correct, so if you traded in a car you only paid $100 in plates 8 months ago, you might get a $25 credit toward the new plates.
you don't need to bring in your old plates, it saves a few bucks to reuse them and bring in the registration from the old vehicle.

And no matter how you slice it the process is not cheap. Even my 5 YO car was $260 the first and $200 this year. For El Paso county we have an estimator. http://www.epcclerk.com/motorv/estimate.php First year for a $40K truck was over $800.[panic][Wow2]

And also start saving for next year, the fees don't go down as fast as depreciation of the vehicle does.

Another good reason to NEVER buy a new vehicle unless you have the money lying around in piles.
I'm finally down to $100/yr for my 2004 Tahoe. [Coffee]
You're going to end up paying a chunk, unless you're going to buy old and used.
I miss some things about Texas. Like putting plates on a brand new truck for about $45. The roads there are in much better shape too. Always baffled me how vehicle registration here is so high and there is state income tax yet somehow we have the worst roads of just about anywhere. Always wonder what exactly it is they do with all the money I give the state every year.

Pay my salary. :) Thank You.
It does make you wonder though huh. What are they doing with it! Roads are crap. They are rebuilding major sections of town though, 6th and I 25, 6th and Bryant/Lowell/Perry, new bridged at Sheridan, Garrison on 6th. New project at 6th and Wadsworth about to start up. A lot stuff that was falling down is getting rebuilt finally.
I didn't really want to buy a "new" vehicle, but anything that was nearly new or slightly used was as much as a new one. Screw it, bought new.

Reason why I decided on new was just like above post said, what I wanted used cost almost as much as the new one, so I got the new one because of options and color availability. Wouldn't it be nice to pay the fees based on the trade in difference???

Just got the notice in the mail my plates for '14 2500HD are due next month. $650... That is simply outrageous. Fortunately I'll have an ID address by the 1st week of Aug...registration there is $48 + $7 for a new title.

I hear ha! I was in the same boat for my 14' duramax, got that registration in the mail and said screw the state! So I traded in the 14' and got a 15' duramax just to spite them!
cept now my fees will be about $1200 probably!

I don't miss the heat, but I could buy a bunch of Whataburgers with the difference I pay in vehicle registrations. [Coffee]

I paid over $1k on my 08 Cummins the first year. Second year was still $900...
They bend you over and don't use line regardless. Just paid 1100 for my new plates.

They sure don't use the money to improve the roads up here. Just to keep them at a barely acceptable level.
I thought $180 for my year old bike was a rip off. I feel bad for some of you guys.
Crsp, this thread reminds me that I'm supposed to pick a new work vehicle by the 30th and I haven't even given it much thought. I've got a 2013 Escape Ecoboost now, and my choices are between a 2015 Escape or 2015 Equinox. I hear the Equinox is bigger (than what I have now), but I really like the turbo in the Ecoboost. Thoughts?
We have a Equinox and love it. Even the 4cyl has plenty of power to take a full load up the mountains. The rear seat slides front and back and has a ton of room, 6'6" guys can fit with ease. Lots of cargo space for Groceries, strollers, etc. 23-28mpg consistently and road trips can be 30mpg.
my sister has the 6cyl and it does great as well, lots of power, but 21-24mpg I think. Not worth the power, if we need power, we take the duramax.

The wife wanted an Equinox when she bought a new car a few years ago. But back then the interiors had this fishnet looking fabric on the seats. Looked like a hooker exploded inside the cabin. Other than that she liked it much more than the Escape. She wound up buying a Traverse.
I've got a fold up ladder that goes in the back all the time. I have to lay one seat down now, but I don't see that changing in these vehicles. I was thinking I'd try the Equinox just to try something different, and I really like that the back seat adjusts. Any issues with the 4wd at all? My parents Envoy blows out the 4wd every winter.
Watched some videos, looked up features. Strong win for the Escape. Thanks for the input guys!
And in the equinox is unmatched. I can't even get that thing to slip. It is absolutely awesome in any kind of weather.
interior, if you get cloth sucks imo as far as looks go. Definitely get the leather if you get an Equinox or plan on buying seat covers

All the reasons listed above are why I will NOT purchase a new vehicle in Colorado. Denver wants to pass confiscatory tax rates? Fine, I'll live with my current car and keep fixing it up.

That's the way I look at it too. I'd love a new truck, but the costs for registration and insurance aren't worth it. For 6 months worth of payments, I can do a LOT of fixin' up on my '00 Silverado. It still runs great, plates and insurance are affordable, just needs a new stereo and some cosmetics.
I registered my camper before leaving for Moab...I wanted to tip the DMV over.
Just got the estimate on my "new" used HD, 2014 model-$280, ouch. At least my Tahoe is old enough where it's only $80.
