View Full Version : Heading for AK
Kenai Peninsula, short notice, found 1 place for 5 nights http://www.glacierrunoutfitters.com/ friends from there recommended,
didn't know if anyone here has experiences around there. dates 7/15 to 7/22 +/-.
Have a safe trip. I've never been to Alaska but it is on my bucket list of places to go. Might have to skip Hawaii one of these years and go.
I hear the mosquitoes are almost more dangerous than the bear and moose this year. Pack some serious bug spray.
I saw several outfitters running the kenai the last couple times I've been to alaska. Lots of good fishing, little dependent on how the run is going and if the state got their numbers where they want them, but you picked some good dates I believe. You will have a blast!
The Kenai can and does get extremely crowded, but you should have a great time. Make sure to pack some good rain gear, and lots of bug spray. A head net for the mosquitoes isn't a bad idea either. The bugs will eats you alive. The Kings and the sockeye make a hard run in the later half of July so your dates should be great. My dad caught a 69lb king on the Kenai a few years back, not the biggest to come out of that river but an amazing fish no less. Have a great time and make sure to smoke some salmon and have it shipped home.

Had a great time in Homer, but it was 25 yrs ago this July. Don't remember it being crowded back then. Even though I knew that the sun would be up most of the night, it was still a shock to the system to be up at midnight and still thinking it was 5 in the afternoon. First time I ever saw the extreme tide changes that occur at Homer. No matter what you do,you will have a good time there.

I heard yesterday that if you put a new dryer sheet in your pocket it keeps the skeeters away? worth a try.

Enjoy the midnight sun. When I was stationed in Fairbanks back in the mid-50's we really enjoyed the midnight sun while out panning gold. I'd like to see what it's like up there now that I am a civilian.
Those dates should be good, as the others have said. I have fished all over Alaska and loved every trip. You will deal with mosquito's like you have never seen before, so do prepare for that like everyone else said. And if you do not have quality rain gear, get some.
You can also package fish filet's using a food saver if you have one, freeze it then pack it in Styrofoam lined fishing boxes with some ice and take fish back on the plane. I did that every year I went up there and usually came home with 100 lb's of Halibut and Salmon filet's (use one box per 50 lbs. due to the airline weight reg's). You do have to pay for each box as an additional bag, but the cost is well worth it. When I would get home the fish was always still frozen.
Have a great trip!
Got our cabin in Ninilchick. Capt said the skeeters arent' that bad on the coast areas.
Looking forward to some salmon and halibut.
Now gotta book the flight, rental car. AK Air? any one got better rates, been looking and it's driving me nuts.
I'm envious, would like to go back there. Hope you have a great time!
I spent 3 weeks in Ninilchik with a friend who had a cabin right on Deep Creek. Great place, fished every day and caught silver salmon, steelhead, arctic char and Dolly Varden. Also collected mussels on the beach. Mosquitos weren't bad around Ninilchik. My friend had a moose tag so I went on a hunt up creek with him. Didn't find a moose but we ran into a family of mink and a couple brown bears. I lived on fish throughout my 3 month solo motorcycle trip throughout Alaska and western Canada. This was a morning's catch....
