Picked up this stupid sonofabitch not too long ago from maybe the nicest CO gun people I've met thus far. I took it out shooting today, and after some awkward shots and a bloody lip my resolve has been steeled to SBR it. I'll go through all the tax stamp hassle and such, but eventually I'll need someone professional to install either a side or underfolder and I'm curious to see who you guys use.

It's a 30 min job IF you have the tools. If not then off to a reputable smith, like Bert.

I'm not sure you need a professional to if you want a sidefolder. I used one from these guys for my PAP M85. It only takes drilling one hole. I used their alignment device to locate the hole. I'll lend you my device if you decide to go that route. I only took me about 20 minutes to do the total install.

I can meet with you somewhere if you want to look at mine.

I went the ACE side folding hinge route. No need for a smith if you are capable of drilling and tapping 2 holes. Once the hinge is installed you can take your pick of stock styles. I went with the skeleton stock on mine. Two months waiting for the stamp and then maybe 30 minutes to install.

If you need a smith I'd recommend Bert.

Who's Bert? And the ace would be best, but my mind says under folder

Burt is bptactical.

I think ive still got an underfolder trunion laying around if you decide to go that route. I shot one underfolder once and only do side folders now

+1 I totally agree. I strongly urge you to shoot an underfolder before you decide to install one. Some people like them but after shooting an underfolder a couple times I don't think I would ever put one on anything I own.

Underfolders have a "cool factor" but they seem to be a secondary AK on the range when the owner has a side folder, or wood furniture. An underfolder requires replacing of the trunnion, side folder you drill & tap a few holes.

Both the Underfolder or original sidefolder will require a new rear trunnion, rivets, drilling holes in receiver and so on.. a lot of work and you want to make sure you use someone that does it on a regular basis.

Though not authentic, the Ace side folder adapter is the quick and easy way to go.

Magpul makes a side-folding AK stock now. Ark Tactical had one installed, it was pretty slick. I am not an AK guy, but it seemed a very solid for an AK stock.

That would require swapping out the rear trunion to a fix stock one with the tang. For that effort/expense might as well install a proper Russian side folder. Or does magpul make one for pistol style AKs?

There's a company making a tang that's set up to work with Ace or other side folding adapters. So having to replace the rear trunnion would not be necessary. Th Op should figure out how much work if any he want's to do , or how much he would like to invest with a competent smith doing it for him.

Seems like an odd product but I guess there are those rare instances where such a thing would be needed. Learn something new everyday =)

I'll repeat a variation of what I said before - You have two to four months after you submit a Form 1 to decide what you want to do. And a bunch of people on this board that will likely help you. Start by looking and fondling as many variations as you can before you decide. You can look at what it would take to install a particular stock as well as how it feels. There is no need to rush any decision.

It will help pass the time you are waiting for the stamp to arrive.

Happy Hunting.

I would go with the underfolder, im not a fan of the ace stocks.
